“ People still sleep ??”  Tate narrowed his eyes towards Stephanie but he couldn’t hold the neutral face for too long ; A smile cracked through his facade and he huffed out some semblance of a laugh .  “ You can get some decaf if you’re one of those freaks with a healthy body and not a crippling dependency on caffeine , but I can’t say I won’t judge you any .”

The blond waved his hand and started their path away from the school , peaking back just to make sure no teachers were looking at them because there were some dumb policies put into place about buses and parents and shit .  “ … I just think you’re cool . You know I’m piss poor at making friends .”  One more glance back and he figured they were far away from the property now to get into the back pocket of his rucksack for his pack of Marlboro Reds . One was placed between his lips and then he offered it out towards Stephanie .  “ You want one ??”

                    “   ALLEGEDLY   .   ”   she   slows   her   pace   to   match   his   ,   until   they   are   shoulder   to   shoulder   on   the   much   -   too   -   narrow   path   .   she   isn’t   on   speaking   terms   with   ‘   SLEEP   ’   and   hasn’t   been   for   quite   some   time   .   it   is   too   quiet   in   her   foster   parents’   house   to   be   restful   ,   and   it   always   makes   her   long   for   the   summer   nights   spent   away   from   this   place   .

                    “   WELL   ,   SHIT   .   don’t   let   anyone   else   hear   you   say   that   .   ”   his   words   prompt   something   undeniably   soft   to   stir   beneath   her   ribs   ,   and   she   might’ve   never   admitted   as   much   had   her   expression   not   already   shifted   to   betray   her   .   it   takes   her   a   moment   longer   than   it   should’ve   to   realize   her   mistake   ,   to   school   the   gentle   smile   that   tugs   at   the   corners   of   black   painted   lips   into   something   less   friendly   as   she   snatches   one   of   the   offered   reds   from   him   .   “   i’m   just   the   fucked   up   goth   girl   who   spends   way   too   much   time   in   the   library   .   ...   kind   of   hard   to   see   the   COOLNESS   there   ,   i   guess   .   ”
