So I spent some time away from Tumblr. And I found that not being surrounded by all the bad news of everything happening out there is much better for my mental health.
I intend to find ways to make a more tangible difference in my area. Do things more hands-on than just reblogs.
I imagine this will be long-term. I don't know if I'll be coming back. Don't wait up.
Cheers!

The thing about “the LGBTQ community” is that it has always been an explicitly political coalition. We didn’t all just come together and hug one day.
As a cis bi man, I have nothing individually at stake in political attacks on lesbians and trans people (sometimes I don’t even have anything at stake with certain attacks on gay men!) But I treat an attack on any of those groups as an attack on myself, because basically anyone who wants to target those groups also wants to target my group. This has always been the case: there is no inherent reason why gay men would form a community with lesbians, or lesbians with bisexuals, or bisexuals with straight trans people. But historically we know that an attack on one of us inevitably precedes an attack on more of us, so there was a choice made to unify under a shared umbrella.
The right knows this, and in recent decades has been investing in highlighting wedge issues to divide the coalition and weaken its collective power even as it grows larger. Attacks on trans people from cis LGBQs need to be understood as a form of support for these efforts at disempowering all LGBTQ communities (ex. those TERF orgs that signed on to a legal briefing opposing a comprehensive anti-LGBTQ discrimination law because it included trans people)

Yesterday — April 7, 2022 —, Alabama passed a bill making gender-affirming health care a felony for people up to age 19. This means that trans youth who seek gender-affirming medical care, their supportive parents, and their doctors all may face criminal charges for the care that is supported by every major medical organization in the U.S.
This is the third state to pass this felony ban on trans care.
On the same day, Alabama passed another bill banning trans youth from gendered public spaces (like bathrooms), and a third bill banning any discussion of LGBTQ+ topics in schools.
Half of all U.S states are moving these exact same bills through their legislatures at lightning speeds, including my home state where I transitioned as a minor.
I have only seen outrage about Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill (which affects trans people, too, by the way). Please also keep track of what is happening to trans people at the state level in the U.S. We are being banned from public life and life-saving medical care. These are children. Lives depend on us challenging these bills.

This is actually HUGE!
People with chronic illnesses, or people recovering from illness or accidents often have outrageous medical bills that they have to pay off. When medical debt is recorded on credit reports it makes it harder to borrow money, buy a home, get a car, etc. All these make it harder to work, live, and pay off the medical debt.
If this doesn't effect you, congrats, but it is an incredibly important thing for a lot of people.

As a disabled fat person with multiple chronic illnesses and health issues, some of which are probably caused or influenced by my weight, I am so. fucking. tired of fat positive spaces essentially throwing me under the bus by saying “you can’t harass fat people because they might actually be healthy!“
The implication is that someone being unhealthy is an acceptable excuse for harassment and body policing. The implication is that the only reason you shouldn’t do those things is because you can’t be sure you’re harassing someone who really deserves it. Because fat yoga instructors don’t deserve it. But I do! Because I am actually unhealthy and therefore a Bad Fatty!
Look, it’s important that we spread the science about weight and the reality that it isn’t automatically a health issue. But while you’re doing that, please for the love of every chronically ill person stop giving that as the only reason fat shaming is bad. I deserve to be free from harassment because I’m a fucking person, not because you can’t tell by looking whether I might be actually be a Good Fatty who is super healthy and athletic and doesn’t deserve it.
