Fear of Loss Leads to the Dark Side

Touken? I don’t know her, let’s talk about Ui Koori more. 

What I noticed right away from this chapter was Ui’s outfit change, he’s gone from wearing white primarily in the middle of missions to all black. It could be simply to match Furuta’s change, he is after all on the chessboard a black king where previously Ui fought as an ally of the white king Arima.

My mind however, jumped immediately to a different conclusion. Ui’s decision to dress in all black, and stand at Furuta’s side means he has decided to join the dark side of the force.

So does anyone else find that whole deal very suspicious?

Since the very beginning of :Re, Mutsuki has been a target of the Clowns. Donato zeroed in on Mutsuki as someone that could be messed with, right from the moment they stepped into the room. And Mutsuki was left shaken by that encounter, longer after departing Cochlea.

Of course, the biggest offender has been Uta. Starting from the Auction, Uta has zeroed in on Mutsuki and repeatedly seen what buttons he could push.

“Help won’t come.”

“Your face is cute for a boy.”

Turning into Haise, and pushing Mutsuki past the breaking point.

Laughing about it with Donato afterwards.

And now, we have learned that Furuta called Mutsuki into a private meeting. Handed out a shiny promotion, and an assignment as the mentor of the Oggai. Placed into a position of authority over a bunch of psycho-killer children, that are themselves a representation of the darkest aspects of the CCG.

Placed into a position to continue pursuing Kaneki, and furthering the spiral of obsession and madness.

It doesn’t feel like a coincidence that this happened. That Furuta, a member of the Clowns, would take a sudden interest in Mutsuki. That he would grant this GENEROUS promotion out of the blue, zeroing in on someone at rock bottom.

And just like Koori Ui, Mutsuki is someone driven by an obsessive love. Desperate to reclaim someone that no longer exists, and willing to do ANYTHING to turn back time. Both of them were devastated by the Tsukiyama Raid, losing people they cherished AND their secure world in a single night.

Ui wants to bring Hairu back.

Mutsuki wants “First Class Haise Sasaki” back, and wants to return to the happy time of the early series. Before Shirazu was killed, before Haise abandoned them, and before the Quinx were torn apart.

The question becomes just how far will Mutsuki be driven, and what do the Clowns have in store.
