i do actually like that tom’s arc in voyager works out to be about a guy who sucks ass and slowly gets better but is still kind of a shitty person at the end of it. it’s unfortunate though that both the writers and many of the fans don’t seem to realize that just because he’s dealt with his daddy issues and found acceptance in the voyager family doesn’t mean he doesn’t still suck by way of being racist and misogynistic and generally self-centered

it was a stroke of genius to give James T Kirk a bitchy flip phone in the 60's, truly amazing to watch him slam it shut like a pissed off socialite girl in 2000's teen shows

“Which fictional universe would you rather live in—“ Star Trek. Star Trek. There is a correct answer and it’s Star Trek. “I want to have cool adventures—“ Star Trek. “I want to live in high tech but ethical peace and comfort” Star Trek. “I want to be a psychic alien—“ Star Trek. “But I want to do magic—“ do you know how much weird magic shit happens in Star Trek. Also Star Trek has holodecks you can pretend to be in Lord of the Rings or Star Wars or whatever and then come home to your usually peaceful interstellar community. There are basically no downsides to living in the Star Trek universe if you take the assumption that you remain you, a human living on Earth. You can join Starfleet or you can stay home and enjoy fully automated luxury gay space communism. The answer is Star Trek.

Let me help!
KIRK: “Let me help.” A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He’ll recommend those three words even over “I love you.” (The City on the Edge of Forever)
Next episode:
SPOCK: “I have my own will, Captain. Let me help.” (Operation Annihilate!)
Next episode:
KIRK: I’m trying to help you, Spock. (Amok Time)

spock, literally one fudging episode later, trying to be helpful to jim even though he’s in excruciating amounts of pain: i have my own will, captain. let me help.

so uh I don’t think I’ve seen anybody ever mention the ambiguously affiliated native american man smack dab in the middle of the rec room scene

I've said this before but in the secret good version of voyager when tom gets demoted janeway promotes harry to lieutenant
It fucks up tom and harry a lot, because their dynamic shifts overnight and nothing has changed but everything has changed. Tom doesn't get told he only finds out when harry visits him in 30 days and he sees the extra pips
This is also where you put an episode like nightingale where harry struggles with command (rather than season 7 which was way too late for it)
I think it's ultimately good for both of them but it does make their dynamic weird for at least a season

you know, before i started watching star trek, i thought ppl were just saying it was gay bc they liked the idea of kirk and spock being a couple, but as i've been watching it, i have realized no, they really meant it. "why mr. spock... you almost make me believe in miracles." the city on the edge of tomorrow. "i know your affection for spock." spock being fucking ecstatic that jim is still alive in amok time and even smiling. kirk looking at spock like he holds the whole universe in his eyes when he's talking about the most boring shit. like it's not just kinda gay, it's like spock and kirk were written as an actual loving couple but, y'know, it was the 60s and they couldn't really do that on tv
