lloyd is used to having people around him - hugging, holding his hand, literally hanging on each other. he has a lot of siblings.
harumi doesnât have anyone. she is clingy to lloyd in the beginning, she is touchy, lloyd doesnât initiate physical contact most of the time. itâs something heâs already used to, itâs nice, itâs familiar. but itâs the girl he likes, so heâs all nervous and giddy when she does that.
harumi is the touch deprived one (actually iâd argue both of them are, but harumi is on another level) and it started out as part of her pretend, but she grew to like it. she loves touching him. she was probably told that she should be always composed, neutral and she probably wasnât hugged in the palace at all. remember her baby pictures? her real parents are playing with her, holding her⊠she stands beside the emperor and empress.
after her resurrection harumi doesnât have anyone again, until lloyd finds her. he now initiates contact too! and after everything thatâs happened iâm pretty sure he gave her the biggest hug he could. and held her until she pulled away.

coming back on here in my school induced hiatus to crashout (once again) about llorumi and how almost everyone dismisses their relationship as abusive without looking deeper into it,, sure sheâs certainly not the most mentally stable character and she has her own plethora of issues, and iâm not saying everyone has to love the ship!!!!! i just wish majority of the fandom didnât outright hate on them as much as they do.
most donât realize the gravity of the fact that she was very young with no support system to healthily recover from her parentsâ death and no way of working through/understanding her emotions. she pushes everyone away-- you can see that w/ hutchins and maybe even the higher ranking s.o.g. members. she grew to resent the image of the ninja she had in her head, and throughout the series, she spirals and comes up with ways to keep that image consistent to herself, despite their actions (mainly lloydâs) proving her totally wrong!! part of this is probably due to some envy towards lloyd, someone who has a family to run back to when things get tough. someone who gets praise while she gets forgotten. in conclusion; she really is like a jade--one of the hardest, toughest stones, formed in conditions of high pressure.
speaaaking of lloyd:: he has a raging savior complex. he's trusting to a fault, someone who sees the good and potential in everyone before all else. the harumi he knew was so delicate and nurturing, so different from the quiet one persona that he wrongfully assumes they can't coexist. we see this in crystallized as well as her appearance in prime empire, he tries to convince himself that the "good harumi" is the real one. he's been weaned on the idea of perfect villains and heroes, so when someone who's in the gray area comes his way, he hopes for the latter.
that's (parts of) their individual characters, but how do they work as a couple?? from the outside, it doesn't seem possible. one deceives while the other believes-- except not really. theyre not just their archetypes. harumi isn't just the vengeful bitch with a heart of stone who acts without reason. all she does is (subconciously) protect herself, a defense mechanism to keep her from realizing the fact that the ninja weren't at fault for her trauma. nobody directly wanted this-- and that is what scares her. lloyd isn't just the golden boy whose all-forgiving nature rivals that of Jesus Himself. like harumi, he can be a piece of shit to those who warrant it, and at one point, she really did.
their similarities, in not only their personalities but also lives, make them understand eachother-- which is ultimately what makes me love them so much. under all the anger and built-up hate is understanding. harumi understands what lloyd can take, and always stays there. lloyd understands the rough conditions in which her walls were built. they both have grown to know the parts of themselves they conceal from others, the ugly sides nobody else can see. for harumi, it's her soft side. for lloyd, it's the opposite. the side that's like his father.
tldr; theyre the perfect example of enemies AND lovers, a shining beacon of hope for the girls who feel like a liability, and also peak fiction. (plus i like how they, as a ship, really reflect one of the first morals of ninjago-- "the best way to defeat your enemy is to make them your friend.")

lloyd and harumi have such a unique dynamic itâs like
lloyd doesnât trust harumi because sheâs deceptive and lying but also he trusts her so so much
because no matter what she always tells him what sheâs feeling and what her hopes were
sometimes she doesnât need to tell him anything and he still gets her
he knows sheâs not actually gonna kill him. âokay thatâs itâ and uses spinjitzu. these two are so silly, they are fighting in the jungle, nothing too serious, the attacks are lame, because they are very very unserious about this. itâs not them fighting with swords - itâs fighting when words donât work. itâs them taking a break
he would trust her his life
he knows her despite harumiâs best efforts to convince him he knows nothing
âyou said you never actually had feelings for me, that it was all just a trick, maybe thatâs trueâ
âi understand you hate me and maybe i deserve itâ
do you see that? harumi spent all this time telling him how she hates his guts, how sheâs gonna ruin his life and he still knows that with all the hate comes something else. lloyd knows she cares for him. and he probably realised it way sooner than harumi did, or at least she was in denial way longer. lloyd is not a fool to this shit. lloyd is convinced he deserved the hate sheâs having towards him and knows it doesnât erase other feelings for him - because heâs just like her. he loves her, loved her entire time and also part of him hated her for everything she did, but that hate doesnât erase his love.
âi know you donât want innocent people hurtâ
âso direct your anger at me, not everybody elseâ
lloyd does know her and he knows sheâs gonna regret what she did, so he asks her to settle this between them two, like ??? đđđ what a man đ ???
âif you think iâd ever do that, you donât know me at allâ
i swear i am so done with him
her scream for him to join her, to choose her, his words⊠itâs so intimate like aaahhh
he takes her with him. he leaves the temple but he doesnât leave her. they need to talk and they need time to be alone without their duties and stuff. without their roles as the green ninja and quiet one. they need to be lloyd and harumi because they didnât get to be those for a very long time
also it was like they never really had a fall out for years? like their banter and shit is so comfortable????
#this is just messy#i was thinking about them#again#i never stop#finals are killing meeeee#but not like they do#llorumi#llorumi brainrot is real#lloyd garmadon#harumi

I was going to send it at 520, but I was at school that day. Anyway hope you like my work!(Ëo̶̷̎̀ Ì« o̶̷̎̀Ë)

your demons will go with you
[prequel - you should know I'm a liar] - (FFN) (AO3)
Summary:
Her life is... not what she'd wanted. It's not not what she wanted, either. Whatever expectations she had are no longer of consequences... ...it's not what she wanted, but it's all that she has left. (Harumi works through some abandonment issues. Lloyd is down bad and along for the ride.)
This fic was inspired by this beautiful set of drawings by @mcfaucet, especially the second in this post! It's embedded below. Thank you for allowing me to include your beautiful artwork!
Itâs a hot morning, even though the sun is barely an orange glow in the east. The air is stagnant, with a slight breeze through the all-the-way-open window barely stirring the dust. The birds sing outside the window, but quietlyâtheyâre already tired.
Harumi, awake early due to the heat, lies awake, stares at the ceiling, and wishes for answers.
Her life is⊠not what she wanted. Itâs not not what she wanted, either. Whatever expectations she had are no longer of consequences. When sheâd had expectations for her life, sheâd seethed at her burdens as a princess; sheâd gloried in leading a powerful biker gang; sheâd suffered as the slave of a would-be conquerer.
This morning sheâs in a quiet monastery, alone, except for the other soul that shares her bed.
Itâs not what she wanted, but itâs all that she has left.
And she hates it, because she thought she was better than this. What has she become? A sad-sack live-in something to a boy whose life she destroyed? She knows Lloyd. Even if he says he's okayâFSM forbid, happyâhe's probably lying. He wants her dead more often than not, but heâll never say so.
(She warms his bed, shares his meals, spends her days with him. What more can she give? Sheâs already given him all of herself, and heâs been too hesitant to take it all yet.)
(It's still not good enough. It will never be good enough. He will hate her eventually; especially when he realizes how much of a wasted experience sheâll be, no good for even a moment.)
It weighs on Harumi, and this morning, the silence almost feels like glass. Itâs breakable. Thereâs danger to breaking it, but danger to staying under its oppression too.
Fears and all: itâs better to be known and abandoned than never understood in the slightest.
She wants to cry as she stares at the ceiling.
ââŠLloyd?â
He takes a moment to respond.
âYeah?â
His voice is gravelly, not exercised since yesterday. Not since they said goodnightâsince she'd let him have his way, since he'd kissed her and she'd stupidly believed he meant it, since heâd made her feel wonderful. The thought of it makes her want to shrink into the bedding and disappear.
She hates the honesty of her questions. âDo you ever feel like nobody loves you?â
He pauses. The weight of it is crushing. It's almost a confirmation, almost as if he's agreeing with her. He may as well say it, call her a fool and tell herâ
âI don't. Not usually.â
She breathes out, releasing the tension, disappointed and relieved and horrible.
It was a stupid question. Why would the Green Ninja ever feel unwanted? He was the savior of Ninjago⊠wasting his time with a nobody. Sharing his bed with a failure.
She turns her head away to stare at the nightstand. Her empty glass of water stares back at her. It feels like it's mocking her. Harumi, you're not good for him. You never have been. Deep inside, you're emptier than I am.
Lloyd shifts in the bed next to her. The covers bunch up between them. He sounds restless.
She doesn't know if anything she can say will bring him ease.
âRumi.â
She doesn't say anything.
âRumi, talk to me. What's going on?â
Throw up the defense, you coward. âNothing. Just thinking.â
She feels him move again, and the whole mattress shakes. âAre you just saying that? Did you have a nightmare?â
She closes her eyes and buries her face in the pillow. She can't move farther than that; her body feels like it's full of lead shot. It's just too awful to bearâŠ
Lloyd moves again, and she feels him get closer. His shadow blocks out the early morning light.
âLook at me, Rumi.â
She hates it. She almost hates himâalmost, because she still loves him like she loves breathing, just like she has for years.
Of course he canât be unloved. She loves him. Another reason her doubts are foolish.
Harumi opens her eyes and turns her head toward the ceiling again. Heâs there, leaning on one outstretched arm. Heâs watching her, a crease between his bushy blond eyebrows that desperately need her to pluck them. When did she become the one who took care of him?
âHarumi?â
âWhat do you want me to tell you, Lloyd?â
He frowns more deeply. âThe truth.â
âAbout what?â
âYouâre upset. Tell me why.â
She wants to close her eyes, wants to hide, wants to lie and say itâs nothing. The temptation is always there. Just keep it quiet. No one has to know youâre weak. You can handle it yourself.
Hasnât she handled it poorly enough already? When was the last time independence led to her being happy?
Never mind the fact that she has been happy, ever since her life and Lloydâs became intertwined, ever since they made a life together.
Never mind the fact that waking up next to him makes her happier than anything else.
Never mind that she relies on him all the time, now, and has for a long time. The truth is slipping out anyway.
âLloyd, do you love me?â
Lloyd blinks, and blinks again. âWhy are you asking that?â
She breaks, and glances away, otherwise immobile. âI⊠need to know.â
He doesnât. Heâs only been using you for the little enjoyment he could get. Youâre not worthy of him, you never have been.
Lloyd sighs, but itâs not a heavy, disappointed sound. Itâs just⊠Lloyd.
âYes, Rumi. I love you.â
She closes her eyes tightly. Itâs a lie. âDo you actually?â
âDo I lie to you?â
âNo.â Sometimes she wishes he would. âYou always tell the truth, no matter how ugly it is.â
"Whatâs ugly aboutâabout this?â
Finally she looks at him. He gestures between them, as if to explain the tangled mess of interdependence and bedding theyâve woven. Not quite dating, definitely not marriage, something strange. Itâs not what Harumi had ever pictured for her life.
(She never once imagined lying next to someone, letting him kiss her and touch her and whisper sweet things in her ears. She never imagined Lloyd Garmadon doing that with her, or anyone.)
Itâs better as what she hadnât pictured, but still she doesnât know if itâs good for them. She finds herself frowning. âItâs not ugly.â
âI know itâs not. Do you know that?â
âI donât know anything, Lloyd.â He frowns a little deeper; it was the wrong thing to say. âI just wanted to know if you knew how I felt.â
He doesnât look convinced, but Lloyd lowers himself down to rest on his forearm instead. Heâs still there, above her, practically pinning her⊠but this feels safer, in a way. Like she really could run, but she doesnât have to, because he wouldnât make her leave.
His free hand touches her arm. âYou feel like nobody loves you?â
Words donât come to her. Harumi watches him in silence as he grapples with what heâs said, what sheâs meant.
He grasps her upper arm gently. âIs something else wrong?â
Harumi canât even frown. All she can do is stare at him, at her maybe-boyfriend, not-husband, kind-of-friend. âNo.â
He squeezes her arm, ever so softly. Just enough to feel. âYou know Iâm here, right?â
She nods.
âIâm not going anywhere. I love you.â
She frowns now, struggling to believe his words that sound like lies. âI feel like youâre going to leave.â
âWhereâd you get that idea?â
âItâs bound to happen.â
He frowns too, as if offended. âI donât think so.â
âYou might not have any control over it. People come and people go.â
Lloyd leans closer, and his overgrown bangs brush against her forehead. âThatâs fear talking. You donât have to listen.â
Harumi frowns a little deeper, the rush of fear in her stomach reasserting itself. âLloyd, youâre such an idealist. How do you even survive?â
âI have to. Destinyâs tried hard enough to kill me, and it failed. I have to keep living.â
âLife is awful.â
âThatâs not true.â
âHow do you know?!â
He cracks a smile, and it lights his whole face. It breaks the horrible gloom. It practically glows. âBecause youâre here with me. An awful life wouldnât have you in it.â
She hates it. She hates it! âHow do you do that?! Iâm in a horrible mood, Iâm doubting you, Iâm ruining a perfectly good morning. How are you smiling?!â
âI donât know. Iâm happy?â
âWhat is there to be happy about?!â
âI just told you!â He slumps down, closer to her, and cages her in.
One arm on her left side, the other on her right, heâs poised over top of her like sheâs been captured. Sheâs his prey. Heâs the one manning the trap. She canât escape even if she wanted to.
Harumi closes her eyes, heart in her throat, feeling her pulse pounding its way out of every part of her body. âJust⊠put me out of my misery, Lloyd.â
âYou donât have to be miserable.â
âWell, I am.â
âI canât make you stop being afraid, Harumi.â
âYouâll leave. Everyone does. You did.â
âI didnât have a choice then, Rumi. Remember I took you with me, too.â
She remembers. The Crystal Kingâs floating temple was terrifying, even for his most trusted advisorâa title she hates, because it never felt true, and it turns out her gut was right the whole time. Then she brought Lloyd there, and even though sheâd only ever hurt him, he dragged her out with him.
She remembers the fall, and how they shouldâve died.
She remembers pleading for his life to be spared.
She remembers how he vouched for her, in front of his family and all their allies. How heâd announced sheâd changed.
She remembers how, when she finally got a chance to have everything she wanted, she ran.
You ruin everything you touch, Harumi Jade. Youâre the worst woman heâs ever met. Youâre horrible. You should just die.
âI love you, Harumi. How many times do you need to hear it?â
She screws her eyes even more tightly shut. ââŠAgain.â
âI love you.â
âPlease.â
âI love you.â
âTell me something true.â
âI love you? Iâm not leaving.â
âSomething else.â
Lloyd sighs heavily, and she feels his one arm stray to her neck, to her hair. ââŠI think youâre beautiful. I donât want you to leave. I need you, too.â
Tears prick at the backs of her eyes, and Harumi opens them, knowing sheâll see something painfulâ
âbut sheâs wrong, because Lloydâs eyes are gentle, his face close to hers. He breathes out, and it brushes against her face pleasantly. It doesnât scratch, it doesnât maim. It just is.
He just is.
Lloyd winds his hand underneath her neck to support her head, and he leans down, hair pooling around her face.
He kisses her, slowly and surely, taking every moment available to be there.
She closes her eyes again, letting him do it. She doesnât hold him close. She responds, but only softly.
Lloyd doesnât seem bothered. When he pulls away, itâs not until after he presses a firm, stern kiss to her lipsâone that might bruise. Heâs usually far too gentle for that.
(She likes it.)
âDonât run away from me again.â His voice is husky. âI donât know what Iâd do if you did.â
She can barely whisper in reply. âYou wouldnât follow me?â
âIâd follow, but I know that the only way youâd come back to me is if you wanted to. Eventually Iâd just have to wait.â
Harumi opens her eyes.
Heâs watching her. His eyes are honest. They glisten with the faintest hint of tears. They hurt to look at.
She reaches up and pulls him down into another kiss, and this time, he lays down in her arms and stays.
It takes a few minutes, and several more kisses, before Harumi finally finds something truthful to say. She whispers them against his sternum, inside the cage of his arms, where everything feels safe and warm.
âI love you, Lloyd.â
âYou love me?â
âI know. It's stupid.â
He kisses her hair. âItâs not. Stay with me, even when itâs scary.â
âYou want me?â
âMore than breathing.â
The tears prick at her eyes again. Their disproportionate affection is wrong. âLloyd, Iâm horrible.â
âYou were. Not anymore.â
âI am! All I know how to do is hate.â
He chuckles, and it doesn't feel as mocking as it should. âHarumi, you just said you love me. Which is it?â
She closes her eyes tightly. âBoth? I don't know how to love.â
âYou loved your parents.â
âAnd then I killed them.â
He sighs, finally annoyed. It's not as rewarding as she'd hoped. âLook, Rumi. You can try to run, but we both know you won't get far. Your demons will go with you until you deal with them or you die.â
âThen kill me and get it over with.â
âIf I kill you, then I'll be the one who's haunted my whole life. No thanks.â
âYou're impossible.â
âWhy won't you listen to me?â
âBecause wishful thinking won't solve our problems.â Harumi opens her eyes again. He's still caging her in, or still holding her tenderlyâwhich is it?
Lloyd smiles.
âWhat do you want now, you green cockroach?â
He laughs. âOur problems?â
A question springs to her lipsâwhat are you rambling about?âbut she catches it and bluffs. âYeah, I have a problem with you.â
âMore than one?â
âYes.â
Lloyd leans in and kisses her, even though she tries to pull away, and she isn't really trying that hard. Instinct demands she comply. The Green Ninja, savior of all, wants this.
The Quiet One, Ninjagoâs number one troublemaker, actually does want it. Harumi reaches up, digs her hands into his hair, and pulls. She's rewarded with a surprised, muffled yelp, and then Lloyd is pulling her in much more tightly.
This she can take. It's almost a fight already! She gnashes her teeth against his lip, and his matching response makes her feel like things are finally right again.
Duelling Lloyd has always been the right choice. The Green Ninja is her opponent, and she is his most masterful enemy, knowing all his weaknesses. His body is hers to control now.
Lloyd makes her feel powerful. He even makes her feel beautiful. He makes her satisfied. Itâs the thrill of victory; it just feels different this time. After all, Lloyd Garmadon doesn't quit, he just gives her what he's given, forceful and perfect and somehow right.
(She knows the true name of this emotion, but she can't call it passion. Passion is too good for their screwed-up situation.)
They end up tangled in the sheets a few minutes later, Harumi straddling Lloyd. Theyâre both out of breath and red in the face. He beams at her, like the cat who caught the canary.
ââŠI told you, Rumi,â he pants, âI love you.â
âYou just want to use me.â Why do you always complain?
âWhatever helps you sleep at night. I know what I really want.â
She sighs, and plays the game they always play, because she needs to hear it again. âWhich is?â
Lloyd reaches up and cups her face in his hands. His blond hair is splayed over the pillow like a halo. His eyes shine with delight, or something similar. âI want you, and everything that comes with you.â
Baggage? My body? The usual excuses feel hollow. âYou don't really want me.â
âI want you with me. You're here, aren't you?â
âAgainst my better judgmentâŠâ
âYou said you love me.â
âI liedââ
âNo, you didn't.â He strokes her cheeks, and she somehow likes it. âI'm not letting you get away again. I just got you back.â
âMasochist.â
âMaybe.â
âI'll kill you one day.â
âMaybe when my hair's white too. You'll still be around then.â
âWhat if I find someone else?â
And he grins again, eyes sparkling. He's annoyingly handsome. âThatâs tough. You may be trouble, but you're no cheater.â
Her heart drops to her stomach. âI⊠Lloyd, no.â
âI haven't even asked!â
âNo. I can't.â
He pauses. ââŠThere is someone else?â
Sweet, stupid man. âNo.â
âOh.â He brightens again. âThen you can!â
âYou're that desperate to ruin your life?â
âWhen it comes to you, I am. I want a life with you, and I don't care if it hurts. Let me take care of you.â
Lloyd reaches for his nightstand, tugging open the old, stuck drawer. It clunks when it slams open, but he doesn't appear to care. He pulls out a velvet drawstring bag, opens it, and tips out just the shiny objects Harumi had feared. Theyâre a set of pins, yin and yang, trimmed in gold and green.
He separates one half and offers it to her. âNow I'm asking you. Will you be my yang?â
She hates it. She hates this feeling, how her vision is swimming and blurring. She can't look away but she can't look at him. The pin is beautiful in its simplicity. They have never been so simple. ââŠIs that what we are?â
Lloyd is quiet, but he runs one encouraging hand up and down her arm. âI think so.â
She wants to curse it all and leave, but something tremendous stops her. She knows its name, too.
Hope.
Harumi sniffs, her tears splattering on Lloyd's shoulder. âOkay.â
âYou will?â
She nods, struggling to get past the lump in her throat. âWhy not? It's already the end of the world.â
His hand pauses, and she feels Lloyd squeeze her arm gently. âNo, Rumi, it's not. It's the start of something new⊠and we'll do it together.â
Together. She's never known that word. Lloyd fixes her yang pin to the collar of her pajamas, then the yin pin to his own, and that's that.
It's that simple?
She lets herself get lost in another kiss, and hides in his embrace. The summer heat is sweltering, but at least she's safe.
For once, her doubts grow quieter than the song of doves outside their window.
