Happy story, not sad because i wouldn’t do that to you. In 2007 my dad drove from Wyoming (where he lived at the time) to my apt in Michigan. He came to the door and said, “I have someone with me I’d like you to meet. She’s really nice and she’s excited to meet you.” I said, “Oh, cool. That’s great, invite her in!!” But what I really wanted to say was, “What?!?!! You show up at my apartment with a new girlfriend and give me no warning? Who is this lady?!!!?” So he goes to his truck and returns with a little chocolate muffin — Sophie. Three months old and my instant new best friend. A whirlwind of cuteness overload and silliness. I could barely sleep that night because I wanted to keep petting and kissing her. Thirteen years later, we’re still besties. And whenever I visit, even though I smother her with love, I can’t seem to get enough pets and kisses in. I go through stages when it comes to creating new art. Sometimes I’m painting everyday and I’m so into it I can’t wait to wake up and do more the next day. Sometimes I go weeks without picking up a paint brush. Not sure why, but I think the moment needs to strike me. Or an idea. But most of the time, the stuff I like the most comes from sessions where I just played. Ever have creative valleys like this? I know the mood will strike again, and I’ll put on my apron, put my hair back and start playing with that paint. Sometimes I can easily talk myself out of getting a painting started. The prep is the part I hate because when I get in the mood to paint, I just wanna go. But it’s getting the paint out, pouring fresh water, laying out plastic, preparing the canvas, blah blah blah. I need a studio robot, so I can just step up and say “Let’s paint” Then all at once a canvas appears in front of me, my apron gets tied on, fresh paint and water is at the ready, and brush drops in my hand. How do you keep things interesting in your line of work? Do you like to take classes? Do you try new techniques? Do you step outside your comfort zone from time to time? As much as I love getting messy with paint, sometimes I just love to get on my tablet and play. And sometimes that may translate to something on the canvas in the future. Like this piece, I’m really digging the negative space and could see me painting this. Doing little side exercises like this helps keep the ideas moving and fresh. So, what’s your secret?
