[140701] Update on allegations surrounding 2NE1’s Park Bom 

As some of you may know, YG Entertainment is currently in an emergency meeting related to recent allegations against 2NE1‘s Park Bom. While we wait for YGE to release an official statement,  please find below a summary of the current status of this matter.

PLEASE NOTE that everything reported in the media should be taken with a grain of salt. The Korean media reports on this matter are also filled with misunderstanding and misrepresentations. 

Late last night, Korean media hyped reports that 2NE1 member Park Bom was caught attempting to “smuggle” large amounts of narcotics into the country back in 2010, but was never charged after investigators found she had been prescribed with amphetamine.

According to KBS News, Bom allegedly “attempted to smuggle” 82 pills of amphetamine from the United States through FedEx international mail to Seoul, South Korea in October 12, 2010. Korean customs personnel intercepted and flagged the package at Incheon International Airport and traced it back to the 2NE1 singer.

The package was on track to be delivered to a relative.

An investigation into the incident began shortly after an Incheon district prosecutor filed a criminal case on October 19. Bom was never booked for the drug-related crime, and the case was soon suspended on November 30 after investigators found she had a prescription, meaning that charges would not move forward.

Executives at Bom’s parent company, YG Entertainment, have reportedly gathered for an emergency meeting. 

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IN PLAIN ENGLISH?

Amphetamine is a strong stimulant that affects the central nervous system, and is currently banned by law for domestic distribution in the United States and South Korea unless prescribed by a licensed professional to treat disorders including narcolepsy or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Park Bom had a prescription for amphetamine, and therefore had the right to possess and send the pills through international mail. If she had failed to obtain or produce a prescription, then prosecutors would have all the justification and evidence needed to charge, fine and eventually jail her on drug-smuggling charges. Thankfully, this doesn’t appear to be the case, and the case was rightfully suspended.

HAS THIS HAPPENED BEFORE?

You bet. Back in 2011, several 2NE1 members were falsely accused of being connected to drug scandals, including Park Bom. The overhyping also followed with Korean media announcing that a list of K-pop celebrities who did drugs was to be released. Apparently, old rumors are being dug up again, and we could face a similar legal situation as in 2011.

So next time you see something that looks like a “scandal”, do your research and never accept anything you see without hint of suspicion. Today doesn’t appear to be a great day for (some) K-pop media.

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?

1) Netizens are looking to YG Entertainment’s statements to get a clear idea of what had exactly happened and what was the exact reason for why she was given the clear as the drug is still considered illegal in Korea. The agency says they were working on their statement, but that they’ve experienced delays in preparing it so it may come a bit later than expected.

2) 2NE1′s activities as promotional ambassadors for a campaign for the Ministry of Justice in 2010 are being questioned by media outlets, who wonder whether this may have played a role in why Bom’s case was closed or suspended by the prosecution, raising questions about favoritism.

3) Bom’s continued participation on ‘Roommate‘ is being looked into. The PDs were asked about whether the revelation of this past incident would play a role in Bom’s appearance in the show, and a rep responded, “We held an emergency meeting after the staff learned about Bom’s news… We are currently sorting out our position on the matter… There is nothing that can be said at the moment. We are currently talking it over.”

4) There are allegations that this incident is being revived due to investigations into government mistakes during the Sewol rescue. There are also allegations the government are misusing the victims fund.

There is no doubt about the fact that 2NE1′s image as a group and Bom’s personal image will be tainted by this controversy. Whether Bom is cleared or not, there will be those individuals who will never see the girls in the same light again. That is the truly unfortunate reality about rumors and gossip-mongering. Our best device as Blackjacks is to give her encouragement, send our love, and show the world the true strength that is the Blackjack fandom.
