Bayard Rustin was an openly gay Black man who was Martin Luther King’s right hand man. He planned the Million Man March and was subject to scrutiny for his sexuality and deemed a “deviant” and “pervert”.
Bayard Rustin can be found in nearly every picture of MLK yet he has undoubtedly been erased from history. We have to fix that.

your first and most pressing concern should be for the safety of black people. it should be for justice. it should be in making this not just a moment but a reshaping of cultural bias.
this is not a fun little game for you to trot around flipping off cops and making light of a situation you were never affected by. it is not your chance to have a little bit of adventure in the middle of a quarantine. i am speaking as an author and i am telling you to stop fucking making this about katniss or harry potter or whatever - you can be shaped by media, sure, but this is not and has never been about you roleplaying your favorite action heroes. this is not another “disaster of 2020″. this is not a quirky instagram post, it’s not a chance for you to meet up with your friends, it’s not a tactic to get your tiktok trending.
this is about racial injustice. this is about the entire system that is built on that injustice and grows fat on that injustice. don’t get distracted. the police force is not the only systemically racist organization.
black lives matter. and we do not stop until every organization recognizes that and actually acts on it.

If a parent had a child they knew to be 30 minutes away and texted them out of the blue “be back in 5” - if they beat the shit out of that kid for being late, we would call that abuse.
If that parent closed off every opening in the house so the child could not enter and then blamed the child for not entering, we would call that abuse.
If that parent waited with bated breath like some kind of Cinderella for the clock to strike 8, at which point the child and all the child’s friends were in immediate danger, even if the kid is literally sitting on the porch and therefore on the property - we would call that abuse.
In any situation! Where a parent beats the shit out of a kid, denies them food, water, and a bathroom for over 12 hours, allows them to pass out from thirst or hunger, or otherwise causes trauma - we would. Call that. Fucking abuse.
In abusive households, when the abuser is questioned, they become violent. If you believe that the answer is submission, you are siding with the abuse. No victim is EVER “asking for it”.
If you! Are sitting at home. Biting your nails and saying “just listen! It’s a curfew just listen!” PLEASE understand that if this was happening in any other nation, our media would have a field day with quips about authoritarian regimes led by a faux-religious madman. Wake up. Our nation is resorting to violence rather than admitting fault. And in a home? We would call that - abuse.
