I’ve noticed lately that it’s often Americans who leave tags like “I don’t even care if it’s made up” on posts I make that are not particularly unbelievable, but are pretty specific to my way of life or corner of the world (like the one about the cheese vendor). It reminds me of that tweet that was circulating, that said Americans have a “medieval peasant scale of worldview”—I mean, if you don’t want to be perceived this way by the rest of the world maybe don’t go around social media saying that if a cultural concept or way of life sounds unfamiliar it must be made up?
It’s the imbalance that’s annoying, because like—when I mentioned having no mobile network around here I had people giving me info about Verizon to fix my problem. I post some rural pic and someone says it must be somewhere in the Midwest because the Southwest doesn’t look like this. My post about my postwoman has thousands of Americans assuming it’s about the USPS. On my post about my architect there’s someone saying “it’s because architecture is an impacted major” and other irrelevant stuff about how architecture is taught in the US. This kind of thing happens so so so often and I’m expected to be familiar with the concepts of Verizon and the Midwest and impacted majors and the USPS and meanwhile I make a post about my daily life and Americans in the notes are debating like “dunno if real. it sounds made up”
Going online for the rest of the world means having to keep in mind an insane amount of hyperspecific trivia about American culture while going online for Americans means having to keep in mind that the rest of the world really exists I guess
#.....this is such a cringe fucking country with an imbecilic populace#the only thing i protest is that baseball has no international pull. its very popular in latin america the carribbean japan#its also becoming more popular in china which will help spread the appeal. and a new league started this year in india pakistan and the UAE#thats really super besides the point i think i just wanted to infodump. oops

So anyways with the rapid rise of fascism I feel it’s a good time to point out that it’s perfectly legal to follow unjust orders slowly, badly, or inefficiently

I wish we could have a nuanced conversation about queer erasure without one side screaming all historians are homophobic and are trying to hide queer history from you and the other side screaming no historians are trying to hide anything from you and any critic of academia is anti-intellectualism.
Historians are people. Like any other kind of people they each have their own biases that affect their work. Some historians are queerphobic and will absolutely hide queer history from you intentionally. Some historians are not queerphobic but will perpetuate queer erasure by not actively questioning the research of the queerphobic historians who came before them. And some historians are not queerphobic and are actively trying to undo the damage of queer erasure.

i really really love the ircgalleria account on here because i understand how fashion and nostalgia both work and ive seen it happen a dozen times during my lifetime but i still want zoomers to understand that when you are talking longingly about "y2k fashion", this is what youre actually referring to. the pics on that account and its associated instagram, which i absolutely and unironically love, because the pictures are truly archival gold and show a level of human joy we may not see again in my lifetime, is what everyone actually looked like between about 1999 and 2008, depending on geographical location and metropolitan level. it was arguably one of the single worst eras of personal style in human history. except for goths who were actively at an event of some kind and other really alienated or marginalized people, EVERYONE looked bad, all the time. one of the great reliefs of aging has been getting away from having to look at everyone waddling around in outfits made entirely of clothing that not only didnt fit, but was physically painful, and finally seeing everyone let their eyebrows grow back and learn how to do their makeup properly from influencers. god makeup used to be bad. the products themselves, not just how we applied them. i'll take every broccoli-headed zoomer kyle and his nose-contoured girlfriend over the appalling crap that passed for the normative trends back then

we need to have a way to post a pdf directly to tumblr. tumblr should have another post type called "pdf" so we can embed them easily. tumblr will never be the new pdf without this function.

i really like and connect with utena because she operates under the belief that she is immune from being a victim.
she believes that her bold and brash attitude and her boyish presentation innately protects her from being targeted by predatory men, and that if she or someone that she loves is being preyed on, she would immediately notice it and shut it down.
but when it comes down to it, she doesn't notice the abuse enacted on her or anthy, who she perpetually swears to protect, because she thinks it's something that couldn't happen to her or her friends, just so long as it's under her watch. however, in reality, she is just as vulnerable as anyone else, even viewing akio as a romantic pursuit that she has to compete with anthy for at points, rather than the actual groomer that he is.
i think it's such a realistic portrayal of what is a pretty common mindset amongst young girls, especially those who are more outspoken than others. it's really tragic and delightful and i love seeing victims that aren't just the soft, wishy-washy ideal the media likes to project on victims, painting them as helpless in the hands of an abuser.
it really emphasises how manipulative and normalised these kinds of societal constructs and experiences are, how they might be happening around you, to your friends, to you, how you might not even realise it - because people feed to you an idea of a perfect victim, of the kind of person a victim should be, and you think "no, that couldn't be me," all while those same things wear you right down, and you're still thinking you're the one in control.

Five of Swords 🗡️
In a show about people being trapped in self made coffins, Namami is one of the only characters that's able to step away when she realises how harmful the system is to her. This card isn't about that, though! Five of Swords is about trying to win an unnecessary battle, inevitable defeat, and trying really hard to stab a classmate. Don't mind the bloody nose, the scraped knee, the smudged mascara - she's going to keep fighting, longer than she needs to, no matter who gets hurt, as long as the sun keeps shining down just on her like a spotlight.
one of my pieces from a now cancelled zine. the other piece is here, go look at this kid having a chill day. drafts and notes below
NANAMI MY GIRL MY SILLY GOOSE i was sooo happy to get assigned a card about her and i REALLY wanted to do the concept justice!! but i was fighting with this the entire time lmao!! i think her pose and expression changed a thousand times and i couldn't figure out where to place the swords or what to do with the sky, i kept trying to switch to a more painterly style bc i hated the lines and ended up just wasting time.... nightmare!!! well anyway hope u like it 💁♂️
some things:
she's wearing anthy's rose bride tiara and the earrings that were given to utena by akio, which can only mean good things for her. she's winning the fight. she's gonna win it. (the sillhouette of her shorts is similar to tsuwabuki's middle school uniform shorts in an effort to make her look more childish)
touga was originally supposed to be lurking in the background but he was messing with the composition so i deleted him. then his sword was supposed to be impaling nanami's rose but i didn't like it there so i moved it. despite everything he's still in the scene but only if you have eyes and hearts that believe..........
the yellow sun and white clouds could be an egg 🍳 it could be 🥚 take my hand...
i think the third thumbnail was actually my first attempt but i didn't like it very much... i liked the first one but wasnt sold on it tbh!! i still like the imagery of the tangled swords weighing her down and the little cuts and bandages on her hand, but idkkkkk. i just wouldn't have made it work lol so i guess i went for the most complicated one 💁♂️
