This is a Wicke/FH post.... but with Arcane spoilers!!!!

Rare alt fandom post by me but I swear it's relative-

This won't make sense to my FH fan followers who haven't watched Arcane's season 2 finale but dear companions in Viktor Christ, the way his mask/face is designed evokes the exact kind of energy Wicke's villain mask/costume should, in my mind. His final form literally embodies "a monster garbed in forbidden science", and I literally conceived a character design under that phrase whose mask I literally described as "A helmet reminiscent of itself tearing away from itself, from nondescript features. Where is the face? Which layer is it?" So obviously, seeing something like that is very satisfying to me. I actually really liked the design. I saw a lot of body horror and uncanny feelings evoked from that, which should be how the people of Loss Diablos view their local evil Citizen.

It's been one year since I posted this guide to FH Retribution. A magnum opus? Maybe. My baby? Yes. I'm glad I decided to share it, SO glad it's gone to good use! I look forward to trying my hand at Revelations someday. As I've said, Chapter Nineteen was the most challenging. It was also the most fun! Here are the kind of notes I had encircling me:

Self indulgent gender ramble (MC Wicke in Fallen Hero)

I believe I've used mostly he/him and also they pronouns. Never specified gender. That might be confusing. Fact: Wicke is a he/him in civilian form, a he/they villain outside of the suit, and a he/they/it in the suit. To me it is not about the legitimacy of changing pronouns, or of it pronouns, or equating gender to villainy. In fact for Wicke it only partially has to do with gender (he considers himself a man, or sometimes, still tries to). I love how significantly gender interplays with your MC's narrative (the most I've seen in any choice game), but I also love the blurring of lines between identity and perception. For Wicke the blurring becomes a spectrum between his sense of being a man, and of being inhuman at all. Which is very much an aspect of still figuring himself out beyond the scope of gender, while still being relative because of his sense of not being able to have one due to the nature of his birth/his species- less than agender, but an uninterpretable and alien thing. It's also an aspect of living several lives and in what ways/how deeply those separations can run, and of how they see themselves/how they imagine people seem them as a villain. Throughout all this, his presentation is male. Fact #2: Wicke is an AFAB with an AMAB puppet, but has very low puppet individuality. The puppet is just a conveniently male body to use, very useful but totally disposable. Tries not to rely on it too much. This is to say despite any relief from dysphoria, the relief does not feel real or satisfying- his own body feels real to him, and as dissatisfying as it is the trauma of living in it is his own. Wicke is not Wicke without trauma. When he reveals the truth to Mortum, he uses escapism as an excuse, which is about the only time that's most truthful- only because it came to a relationship, which he feels he cannot have (yet) in his body. Idk man. This tale is rich for exploration. Not just of gender itself but how a traumatized individual relates to it and similar themes. Brrr

I agree which makes mine super frustrated and is why when he does reveal himself it will likely be in a brutal way, as if to punish Ortega for daring to be vindicated. Good shit, good shit

I think there's a part of Ortega that is vindicated when Step reveals themselves as a villain. Like, they knew they weren't retired, they knew they didn't give up, knew they would never stop fighting. They just happen to be on the other side now. It's a tiny victory inside a greater loss. That fire that Ortega admired didn't go out, it changed.

My favorite thing about Fallen Hero as a series is still how it flips the traditional roleplay question of "Here are the factors - what will you do?" to "You did this - why? What factors led to this decision?"

It's a game about motivations. Justifications. And that means the character is never locked into one set of character traits or another.

You did this - why? Changing priorities is the whole thing, and that really plays into the breadcrumb story reveals and the answers MC encounters to questions the player never expected to need to ask.

It's all in medias res, and I love it. You're doing great and terrible things, you don't know the full story. You may know less than your character, and yet - here you both are. Why?

Hey hello, still alive and kicking. Random question occurred to me, who here into FH has official reference voices in their head for any of the characters? I only hear Ortega (kind of looks and definitely sounds like Arcane's Sevika) and Wicke. Who sounds exactly like this (it's really a lovely cover of Leonard Cohen's Avalanche by the way). Argent also has a voice but I have no example to describe it. Please drop your voice claims below I am most curious

Very excited to see where FHR romances go because 1. I only have two romances, a main one for the main body and a main one for the puppet- where the love and lives are so separate and yet the feelings are universally real; 2. I don't know that any romance will work out for Wicke and kind of can't envision an ending for him that includes a true love or lasting relationship. I want to see where these two relationships go and how they might intertwine, and treasure them while they last before ending up alone (in that sense) again.

Not sure what it says about me that I'm a Mortum (f) and Argent romancer and no other, and I voted for Argent yet I don't know that that relationship will work out... hm

Ricardo Ortega:

Ricardo grows a grief mustache half out of guilt and half to avoid looking like his abusive asshole father and will shave it in a heartbeat if he thinks sidestep seriously doesn’t like it. He will drop the puppet in a split second if he thinks there’s a whisper of a chance of having something more with sidestep. If he’s suspicious of sidestep being a villain—but they come out as trans—his suspicion score plummets and he nearly breaks into tears over his guilt at assuming something bad about them. Again and again he comes to sidestep’s defense and believes in them.

He’s viciously, dangerously intelligent. He’s putting on five dozen masks a day because he’s desperate to appear correct for every situation he’s in. He’s desperate for people to never see who he is underneath, terrified that they’ll never want him for *him*.

He’s got giant stupid brown cow eyes, he’s tanned dark from the sun. Ortega’s the only character who can be six feet tall.

This man is so unhealthily devoted, obsessive, insane and gorgeous that there is a very firm reason every other sexy man (gn) is quaking and whining at him being included.

Vote Ricardo Ortega because if you genuinely want the sexy man (gn) truth, you already know who it is. Everything else is deluding yourself.
