Lots of media and topics in News & Newtype Music section in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype. Featuring Fumi Hirano (Lum), Noriko Hidaka (Minami Asakura), P.J. (What’s Michael) and Kumi Miyasato (Megazone 23). These pages focuses on music releases from Urusei Yatsura, What’s Michael, Touch and Megazone 23. Also, an autograph giveaway from the ladies featured in this issue.
Fumi Hirano:
Fumi Hirano's hit song collection! Fumi's Lum Songs
It's already been four years since she debuted as Lum in "Urusei Yatsura." In addition to voice acting for anime, such as Simone in the new autumn program "SPT Layzner" and Maki in the video "Chuhai Lemon," she is extremely busy with movie dubbing, commercials, DJing, album production, and concerts. The highlight of this autumn was the "Urusei Yatsura Fan Convention," which ran from September 24th to October 9th across the country, from Sapporo in the north to Fukuoka in the south.
"Since I'll be singing rock songs this time, I'm also changing my image, and going with the psychedelic and rococo styles that are popular this fall... I'm preparing with the simple idea of starting with a change in appearance. My hair is also cut short, unlike when I debuted, so I've gone from a Parisian look to a London girl look (lol)."
Lately she's been wearing something like a headband on her head (sorry).
Noriko Hidaka:
Minami is the Madonna of "Touch." Noriko Hidaka now sings Minami's heart with brilliance.
"There was a lot of pressure before I started playing Minami. The original work was very popular, so there were many producers. Each of them had their own image of Minami, so at first I was really worried about the gap. It was a real stomachache (laughs)." It's already been half a year since she voiced Asakura Minami. During that time, the show "Touch" seems to have had a huge impact on her as a voice actress.
Moreover, the theme song was made so that it was made into an LP. Then, there were strong voices from fans asking, 'Why doesn't Lum sing it?', so this time it finally came true." By the way, her favorite song is "Love Boomerang." The concert and the LP were both completely separate projects, but they happened to overlap at the same time, making it a big project. Minami Teruko and others were also in attendance at the concert, making it a fun event.
P.J.:
PJ, who sings the theme song for the Michael Video based on Makoto Kobayashi's novel, is 16 years old and loves music, singing, and dancing, and is full of energy and youth.
Whats Michael?
The theme song is by a wonderful boy named PJ.
PJ discovered reggae and started singing three years ago, when he was 13 years old.
"There was a reggae record store called Natty Dread in Kichijoji, and I used to hang out there a lot. The Cool Runnings always practiced there, and one day they asked me, 'Why don't you sing with us?' That's how I started singing."
His real name is Donald Price Toru. He has an American father and a Japanese mother, and is a bit shy.
-What was the first reggae song you heard? "I forgot (laughs). But I guess Bob Marley was the one who influenced me. But the first record I bought was Aswad (a British reggae group) for some reason." Since then, he's been listening to reggae almost exclusively.
For his first attempt at a catchy, funky song, he sang "SOPPO!", the theme song for "What's Michael?". "It was really difficult because I'd never sang it before. I intend to sing more songs in the future, but this one has a completely different feel to it. To be honest, I was really taken aback when I first heard it. I always see "What's Michael?" in manga. It's one of my favorite manga, along with "Fist of the North Star" and "Ginga." PJ is currently in the 10th grade at an American school. In a Japanese school, that would be his first year of high school.
Kumi Miyasato:
Kumi Miyasato's first album
I'm so thrilled. The production of "Megazone 23 II" is going well! Kumi is also excited about the long-awaited first album.
Now, if you're curious about the details, Miyasato Kumi, who made her debut as a voice actress in "Megazone 23," will be releasing the theme song for "Megazone 23" and her first album, "Tokimatsuri Eve."
But there is one song that is idol-like, and I'm happy to sing it!! " "Most of the songs are up-tempo. There are some ballad-like break-up songs in there too.
The long-awaited Part II of the debut work "Megazone 23" has been decided. It will be directed by battle animator Ichiro Itano and is scheduled to be released early next year. The theme song and the role of Tokimatsuri Ipu will of course be performed by Kumi-chan.
I'm currently attending a part-time public school, but this spring I will be entering high school.

In the News & Newtype CM Clip section the the 11/1985 issue of Newtype, there is an article for animation pioneer Robert Abel. This man was an amazing visionary and an absolute powerhouse in computer animation for decades. He passed away 9/23/2001 from a heart attack at age 64.
All of the commercials seen on these 2 pages and then some can be seen here:
The complete works of Robert Abel - side 1
The complete works of Robert Abel - side 2
Brilliance
Do yourself justice and watch these amazing commercials.
The world of R. Abel, a vision of the future with cutting-edge CG technology and outstanding ideas.
Robert Abel is an American filmmaker who has had a profound influence on Japanese computer graphics and animation.
Robert Abel has won 23 Clio Awards, one of the world's three major advertising awards and the equivalent of the Academy Awards for commercials. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 10, 1937, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11. After graduating from UCLA in 1960, he taught himself architecture and spent a year studying abroad in West Germany. After returning to Japan, he studied film and design at the UCLA Graduate School, earning a master's degree. In 1971, he founded Robert Abel & Associates.
With the sexy robot that appeared in "Brilliance" by Abel, Abel created the first computer animation that accurately captured and reproduced the movements of a model human. Abel continues to make tireless efforts in creating new images.
Abel values storyboards. Although they are sometimes provided by agencies, they are often conscious of the limitations of what can actually be visualized, and they say that they get better results by leaving it to their own staff if possible. This is because they have a production policy that says that there is no point in creativity unless they take on the challenge of creating images that no one has ever tried before and that seem impossible.
Once the storyboard is approved, the animation is created based on it. At this point, it is checked by the client or agency. Any corrections are made and the animated computer data is used as is for the actual production. This is how Abel's commercials are made.
The complete works of Robert Abel. A must-see for visual people!
This is a compilation of 800 carefully selected works from Robert Abel's studio since its establishment in 1971. The laser disc "The World of R. Abel: The Pioneer of New Wave TV Commercials" (9,800 yen) is a treasure trove of not only commercials, but also title logos, computers, animations and other new footage.

MTV
Funny Funny!! A collection of anime video clips
MUSIC MUSEUM
Are you tired of videos that just feature dancers or have the artist act cheesy? As promo videos become more varied, it's nice to see more videos that use animations and dolls. MTV is going crazy again tonight!
*The title says it all. The writers over at Newtype were excited about the animation displayed in the music videos on MTV in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype magazine. I really love their enthusiasm for animation and the different techniques used in the videos that were featured in the article*
John Fogarty - Vanz Kant Danz
Produced by Will Vinton Productions. The main character is a pig named "TUNES". A 3D animation style with clay pigs and break dancer dolls moving frame by frame. The dancing pigs are really cute.
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Produced by Steve Baron, who has worked on famous promo videos such as "Billie Jean." I was surprised at the beauty of the CG animation overlaid on the live footage from Budapest, Hungary. The color scheme is excellent, not only in the square-like animation but also in the live scenes, where only the instruments are colored. It seems that we will see more of this kind of thing in the future.
Prince - Raspberry Beret
The video director is Prince himself. It is a rather flashy video that combines live performance scenes, live action of the dancers around him, and animation. The images of people's faces and skies remind me of psychedelic illustrations from the 1960s.
a~ha - Take On Me
Warner Pioneer This was also made by Steve Barron. The animation was done by Limelight Productions in the US. The strange footage of the members' movements turning into animation seems to have been quite elaborate.
Goon Squad - Eight Arms to Hold You
The second single from Goonies (movie). It's not an animation, but an elaborate piece that moves puppets one frame at a time, like the old monster movies. The punch line of him becoming a hero is also hilarious.
Motoharu Sano - New Age
Among Japanese artists, Motoharu Sano is the one who puts the most effort into making promotional videos. This one was made by Tim Pope, and features a robotically marching doll and a scene of Sano rapping alternating. It's not particularly eccentric, but it's a memorable video.
The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me
It was produced by D.J. Webster, who recently produced Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart's "People Get Ready." The animation was produced by Broadcast Arts in Washington. It's a wave-like video that's like an American comic that's been animated, with a lot of hard-boiled touches. It shows a new direction for promotional videos.
Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Accidents Will Happen
The production is by female producer Annabel Jankel. The best anime and the painting itself is simple. But it's a radical movement with a touch of emotion to the song. Perfect for the page.
Cars - You might think
The first MTV Video Awards were held in May, this is one of F. Stein's masterpieces. The members of Cars suddenly turn into flies(?) and the skillful combination of live action and animation is eye-catching. The video is more popular than the song itself. Is this your masterpiece?
Go West - We Close Our Eyes
Godley & Creme (formerly of 10cc), a sought-after video director, made this epic film at a cost of $90,000.
-Another fun thing about MTV is the various animated jingles. There are a lot of great pieces of art that last just a few seconds.- *(Link to MTV bumpers of the 1980′s. This is what Newtype was referring to as “animated jingles” in this part of the article.)

The Official Art of SPT Layzner in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype. Character designs illustrated by Moriyasu Taniguchi and mecha designs illustrated by Kunio Okawara.
*Excerpt from the first page translated by Google.
★SPT is an abbreviation for Super Powered Tracer, that is, super space strengthening functional clothing. This is a combat weapon originally developed by the Ministry of Planetary Exploration of Glados, which has built up a highly computerized society, and refers to a space suit that has the function of completely amplifying and reflecting human behavior by a computer system. However, it is easier to understand it as a humanoid combat mecha rather than a space suit. The biggest feature of SPT is that the backpack system can be retrofitted, and space type (for outer space action), flight type (for atmospheric action), ground type (for ground action), general purpose (3 Type that combines two functions) etc. Blue Meteor SPT Layzner setting reference materials collection.
