Story Beats 3.0

❖ Opening shot of the ramen shop in the alleyway

❖ Shoyu and Miso waiting for customers

❖ Shoyu decides to go to the store

❖ Miso is entrusted with the shop and told to stick strictly to the menu

❖ A customer appears and orders

❖ Miso scrambles to fix it perfectly but his clumsy nature inhibits him

❖ A pot boils over, a pan catches fire, and Miso accidentally knocks over a container of garlic powder and spills it into the broth.

❖ Miso anxiously flips through the recipe, not knowing what to do

❖ Miso has an epiphany and whips out a notebook of his own recipes

❖ Miso fixes the broth according to his recipe and hands it over to the customer

❖ In a sudden wave of doubt, Miso glances at a picture of him and Shoyu and realizes he’s made a mistake

Treatment 2.0

At a small ramen shop nestled in an alleyway business is running pretty slow. Shoyu, the shop owner, and Miso, a part-time apprentice, are lounging around waiting for customers to show up. Shoyu realizes they’re a bit short on supplies and could probably use some more. Since the day has been slow, he decides to make a quick grocery run to restock ingredients. Shoyu entrusts Miso to watch the shop. Miso asks him not to leave him alone and is worried he cant handle things himself but Shoyu reassures him and heads out. 

Miso dutifully guards the bar with his promotion but is distracted after a period of time. He snaps back when a customer surprises him. Seeing it as a chance to prove himself, he does his best to make the dish but is pretty sloppy about it. He can handle one customer but as he finishes four more appear. Chaos ensues as he scrambles to organize himself. Things boil over, catch fire, and fall on the ground. In his haste, Miso knocks over a container of crushed garlic into the broth, ruining the recipe. Overwhelmed, Miso looks up to a picture on the wall of him and Shoyu and regains confidence in his goal to prove himself. He tightens a headband and continues to work in an organized chaos. He manages to add ingredients to balance out the garlic. Despite the messy way they were prepared, the ramen comes out amazing and the customers are happy. 

Shoyu comes back with grocery bags to the aftermath of the kitchen. Miso looks exhausted but gives a thumbs up. Shoyu drops the grocery bags and rubs Miso’s head proudly. Shoyu reaches into one of the grocery bags and takes out some takoyaki he bought on the way back as a reward for Miso’s hard work. The two laugh and eat it happily.

Character Designs and Concepts

With Miso I spent a lot of time solidifying a face shape that emphasized on roundness

Shoyu has a much more angular face shape to contrast with Miso and highlight his sharp personality

World Building

Street/Establishing Shot: The ramen stand is in an alleyway surrounded by a cluster of other shops and buildings as well as signs and advertisements. The street is bright and consists mainly of cool colors while the shop stands out with its warmer tones. A couple of red lanterns hang outside the stand as well as a curtain of flags sheltering the interior.

Inside the Shop / Main Setting: The ramen stand is mid size, not as small as a traveling stand but not near the size of a fancy restaurant. There’s a bar going the length of the shop with barstools and assorted condiments and utensils ordered neatly on top. Behind the bar is an open kitchen where the customers can easily watch the cooks as they prepare their food. The kitchen is a lot less pristine than the front of the shop and looks well used, yet taken care of. On the side walls of the stand are a calendar, a menu, an electric fan, and various pictures and knick-knacks.

The Store / Brief Cut: Located a good 15 minute walk from the ramen stand, the store has all of the ingredients a shop could need. Only an aisle is visible in the cut, it is bright and full of colors. The overall tone of the store is light blue from the fluorescent lights. The shelves are full of packaged ingredients such as dried seaweed and garlic cloves.

Logline: A clumsy part-timer is entrusted with running a busy ramen shop while his boss makes a grocery run.

- carefree apprentice of shoyu’s restaurant

- clumsy and a little dull, but tries his hardest when it comes to it

- spends slow days playing video games at work, loves his job but can lean towards a lazy tendency if not careful

Everyday place: eating snacks, playing video games, and watching tv in his small apartment unless at the job

Deepest desire: to make shoyu proud 

Greatest fear: messing up horribly
