There is something so tragiclly symbolic about the greatest of elven smiths choosing to cut off his thumb in order to escape the evil he inadvertently welcomed in. His hands, second to his mind (which Sauron has already destroyed), are his greatest tools. It's not just an escape attempt, it's Celebrimbor choosing to relinquish ever being able to craft again, even if he were to survive Sauron's torture. His grandfather crafted the Silmarils, which for centuries brought war and strife to Middle Earth. But Celebrimbor, the last heir of Feanor, choose to never be able to craft again in favor of the good of Middle Earth.

every single text post i see about the silmarillion has me more and more confused…..kinslaying over some shiny rocks??? half the continent disappearing??? something about some fellow called feanor being dramatic but secksy but also a mass murderer???? elrond having twenty parents???? luthien singing her way out of odd situations and also beating sauron up??? oaths are bad but burning boats is ok???
