Photographs from my visit to Brick Lane. Which has inspired me to change the subject matter from past and present to focusing on a subject that means a lot to me.

Before I start my main body of work I want to show a random piece of work that I did in a tunnel near the university, I think it’s a good link to the protest project as it shows firstly graffitti which is an area that I would like to focus on in my project and it also illegal so shows a protest in itself. It’s subject matter is very anti police which is something I don’t really speak to strongly against it was more something fun to portray. I think my first plan after deciding my subject matter would be to go back to the tunnel and create artwork focusing on the points I am protesting against. This original random idea is a key part of inspiration of the direction that I would want to go with my project, this being graffitti and stencils as a way to present my ideas.

The next set of photographs for my initial ideas depict a symbol of the movement. This being the raised fist. I will upload my research into the origins of the clenched fist in the next slide up. The clenched fist is another key symbol that I wanted to focus on for my initial ideas. This being due to it’s historical importance, as various race groups such as: civil rights, black panthers and blm all adopted it. So is a key way to support the lack of development in society as it is an exact point of comparison for the subject. It also is a way to add a more serious tone to the idea as the clenched first is associated with rebellion.

The next pair is a focus more on the crowd and the movement. It is a way of showing the support and traction of the movement. But it is also a critique as it also points to the fact that even with protests about such significant problems such as racism, there is yet to be any crucial prevention to the matter. The image on the left was taken from a civil rights March in 1967, and the image on the right is from a BLM March in 2020.

The next set of images that I want to use, depict the violence of the protests. However another factor that I want to focus on is the brutality from the police. As one of the main factors of race protests is against police brutality. With the BLM protests significantly increasing in 2020 after the killing of George Floyd by a police officer. The image on the left was taken in 1968 at a civil rights protest outside the Supreme Court in USA and the image on the right is from a BLM protest in Chicago 2020.

The first images that I found depict the stand off between police and protesters. This is one aspect of protest that I wanted to capture. This being the clash of views. And supports my idea of a lack of development. The image on the left was taken from the Selma wall which is an area that I’ve previously researched. And the image on the right is a photograph taken from a BLM protest in London from 2020, which is also previously focused on in my research.
