"Eco-friendly" habits to rethink
As I was doing research for a blog topic, I found a long article discussing thirteen common actions that many consider eco-friendly but that could actually cause more harm than good. Much of the information lines up with information I have already found, but a few things were new to me. A few examples of topics in the article:
Don’t flush the dog poop down the toilet. Sewage treatment systems are not capable of removing harmful organisms from dog poop. Send the dog poop to the landfill.
For many years, I have disliked the practice of using large areas of gravel as a xeriscaping technique, because it provides no habitat or food for critters. This article says that large gravel areas increase the heat above the area and can kill nearby trees and other plants.
The three “R’s” are recycle, reduce, and reuse. Recycling gets more attention, but the other two are probably more important for sustainability.
The article is at the link below and includes links to many other articles with good information on reducing your environmental impact.
