“The History of the Greek, Roman and Egyptian Empires, ergo, how they were separate and then all came together somehow eventually,” the blonde answered. “Why? I told you this book was mine and I got it fair and square.”

“Great! Let’s head over there, then!” Honestly, if Annabeth didn’t have a reputation to uphold as one of the most serious and mature people in the school, she would have been skipping the entire way to the museum. Besides, it had actually been a while since she’d been to the Museum of Natural History – the last time she went there, it was with her dad. It had been a good day out with herself and her younger half-brothers, but they’d been too young to understand anything. Now she got to go with someone who she could actually talk to about stuff, and have way more fun.
Tumblr media
“Really?” Annabeth’s eyes lit up. Usually she’d head straight to the library – that place was like her second home, and she couldn’t go a day without heading there and reading some books. Granted, sometimes she had homework and that was the best place to study, but the masses of books were like heaven to her. Just the word ‘books’ made her excited sometimes. “Are you kidding?! I’d love to go! Do they have books on everything?”

“…That’s a very good point.”
She laughed a little at Eli as they made their way over to the table, placing the books down and stretching her arms and back out a little.
“No need to be so melodramatic, Eli. The chairs weren’t that uncomfortable… and if you were uncomfortable, someone else’s lap was generally the next option. For me, at least.” She looked at the chair in the room. “I think someone suggested we use beanbags instead of chairs. How ridiculous is that?”
She shot Eli a small smile at the encouragement, nodding at him in thanks “I just… we try so hard, you know? We try so hard for them, and to keep ourselves safe, and… I don’t know, it just feels as if we don’t get enough in return sometimes. Not enough.” She sighed. “But I guess I shouldn’t complain, huh? I mean, everything we’ve done… we’ve saved the world twice. We get bragging rights.”
She smirked a little over at him as they reached the door, kicking it open with one foot. “I’ll ask about the Jasmine oil, though. Maybe one of the Hermes kids could grab me some next time they decide to go on a spree, or something. Or maybe Chiron would have some…”

Annabeth chuckled. Honestly, it was at times like these where she realised just how much like his father Luca was. She reached over and ruffled his hair lightly, smirking at him.
“Like what? Like taking a good friend on a date – just hanging out? Honestly, Luca, what do you think dates involve?” She chuckled again, shaking her head. “If you think there’s nothing more than friendship there for you, Luca, that’s fine. That’s perfectly fine, okay? But to answer your question, yes. I very much do think that Eliza would want to go to prom with you. Just make sure to take lots of pictures.”
Annabeth’s eyebrows rose at that. Would Eliza go to prom with him? That sounded so innocent, so sweet, so Percy, that she smiled.
“Do I think so? Of course I think she would! Honestly, there’s no reason to think that she wouldn’t go to prom with you, Luca. You’re very good friends, aren’t you?” Then the implication hit her, and she smirked. “Of course… if you want to get closer than that… I’m sure I could put in a good word ahead of you to her parents. I mean, Jason and I, we’re good friends. And Piper and I are very close. I’m sure I could convince them to let you get in a good couple of dates, maybe extend the curfew time after prom by an extra hour…”

Annabeth looked up at the woman, grey eyes inquisitive for a moment as she wondered exactly why this woman was asking so many questions. Was she a monster? Was she working for a monster? Was she trying to label her as crazy and finding evidence to support it? Was she trying to find reasons to get her taken away from her dad? So many questions…
“I try to hide,” she answered. “Not many usually come, and most of the time they’re in my dreams, but when they’re coming for me, I run and hide. Daddy sometimes fights them, and sometimes he runs with me. He always says that he’s trying to keep me as safe as possible.” She paused for a moment, taking in a deep breath, like a child about so say a long speech. Then she said: “Spiders come and attack me at night and daddy has to scare them away for me.”

Annabeth’s eyes widened at that. You can always trust a place with air conditioning? That sounded so flawed in multiple ways, the little girl didn’t even know where to start. Though, it made her feel better that the lady was joking.
If her dad was working with people who actually believed that sort of stuff, how stupid was the world?
“Well, as long as I’m getting ice cream, it’s all okay with me.” She gave the woman a smile, flattening her hair with her free hand to correct how it had been messed up. “I think it’s partially to do with all the scary monsters after me.” So nonchalant, and yet she sounded so serious.
Tumblr media
“Scary monsters?”
Was this something that Marina was allowed to get mixed up in? She had a sinking feeling that Annabeth’s father wouldn’t be very pleased with her style of caretaking. First ice cream, then invasive questioning? Mr. Chase was a man of standards, and Marina was more of a freewheeling kind of gal.
She’d figured that Annabeth would have been just as stuffy as her dad, but she hadn’t anticipated how sad it would be to see a child that was so stern.
“What do you do when the scary monsters come?”

“Hey! How’s everything going?” Just the appearance of a fellow camper – Henry, the son of Hephaestus – made Annabeth smile. Someone she was more familiar with, and someone who wouldn’t be a jackass to her. After all, he wasn’t an Ares kid, and it seemed as if he had been brought up with respect.
When his expression soured, however, a smirk grew on her face. “Oh, so you’ve met the Roman before, huh?” Of course, Henry was usually the one they sent over as a representative of Hephaestus to Camp Jupiter. He was probably the one who knew the Romans best – who to talk to, who to stay away from, and all that. And if he didn’t like Danny… well. That said more than enough about the guy.

An eyebrow rose when the other blonde cut off, as if the other guys had gone blank for a good few seconds before his voice started working again, going back into a completely different subject. How rude. It was almost as if he’d gotdistracted, and there was nothing to get distracted by around here. Okay, granted, he was probably ADHD, but even Percy didn’t get this distracted.Gods.
“My question was not targeting you. I was just attempting to better understand the workings of a jackassed male’s mind, and you were the perfect test subject. That is all.”
Having been faced the opposite way, Annabeth didn’t exactly notice Henry walking by until he’d already passed them, and her eyes widened, her mouth already opening to call to him before she even registered what she was doing.
“Henry! Henry! Hey!”
Tumblr media
Henry, in all honesty, still wasn’t used to being called by name when he was on the move. Having a one-track mind and a busy schedule often inhibited his social life back at home. But this wasn’t the inn. This was Camp Half-Blood, where everyone was family no matter what. He’d made some pretty amazing friends out of his half-siblings, friends who just understood why he’d rather sense than speak, rather touch than talk.
Not to say that he was a physically affectionate person, of course. His eyes flickered over to the girl, and warmth entered his eyes. He rarely smiled these days; the emotion in his eyes was usually the best that people got.
“Annabeth, hi,” he responded politely. And then, he caught sight of Danny, and his eyes narrowed, expression souring into one of distaste. “I see you’ve met Danny.”
Tumblr media
Danny didn’t trust himself to speak. Not while Henry was around. He was 200, no, 500% convinced that his voice would crack horribly, and then both of them would laugh at him. Insolent jerks. Didn’t they know who his parents–?
A sickening pang of sorrow. Right. Better not go off on that train of thought. He swallowed, Adam’s apple bobbing, and raked a hand through his hair, posture shifting so that he was leaning heavily on his left foot. He didn’t care that Henry was there. Of course he didn’t. He was SLOUCHING.

“Well, not necessarily into smart guys, but I appreciate them. I can associate with them more easily than I can with someone like Thor, or Superman, or whatever. Their personalities make more sense to me.”
Her reasons for liking Thor seemed… simple, she supposed. Normal. The controlling lightning thing amused her, because she knew people who could control lightning and were probably way cooler than the Norse god. Smarter too, most likely.
“Well, if you mean strongest physically, then yes, possibly. Maybe not necessarily as strong as The Hulk, but it’s possible he could be the strongest. Mentally, I don’t feel as if he’s the strongest. Not at all. Stark would be able to outwit him easily, I think, and let’s not forget that the man built his own suits. And then there’s Banner who, unintentionally, created the Hulk. Both those guys could beat Thor with their eyes closed if it came to brain power. Even Romanoff, Black Widow, who’s technically a spy, could outwit Thor pretty easily.”
Tumblr media
“Not all mutants have to be made mutants – they could be, you know, born that way. Not just the product of a mad science experiment.”
Gods, if only she knew. It was a shame that Annabeth technically wasn’t allowed to tell her anything, because technically she knew all different types of mutants.
“Well, mutants can be heroes too, you know. Like the X-Men. All of those students at the academy were mutants, right? But they were also heroes as well. Not necessarily magic powers… but Storm could control the weather. Wolverine had retractable claws. There was even Magneto, who was an evil mutant.”
Did she have a favourite hero? Yes, my boyfriend – he can control water and speak to horses and is the most loyal guy I’ve ever met. “Probably Bruce Banner. Or even Tony Stark. Those two are incredibly intelligent, and both technically created their own powers – Stark created the Iron Man, and Banner created the Hulk, even if it was accidental.”

That put Annabeth on edge immediately, and she took a step back. “How old are you?” she demanded. If this girl was a monster, surely she wouldn’t be able to come up with something like that on the spot – only mortals and demigods really knew their ages and birthdays off-hand.
Annabeth’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. She couldn’t remember where they were supposed to be headed? Something’s wrong here. “Where, exactly, in Maryland are you guys from?” she asked slowly, beginning to get more and more suspicious. She didn’t really like how this conversation was turning.

“Just because no one should go through it doesn’t mean that the Fates won’t let it happen to us. The gods do what they do, and they try to help, but sometimes they care more about character building than their demigods’ well-being.” She shrugged. “We suffer because they need us to be strong. ‘Tough love’ doesn’t even cover it, really.”
Annabeth chuckled at that, rolling her eyes. “Honestly? I wouldn’t worry about Apollo. Just a quick prayer to Lady Artemis should shut him up – after all, many of his own children turned to her because they felt as if he didn’t care and abandoned them. I know demigods that favour their mortal families far more than their godly ones. You shouldn’t feel bad about feeling that way. It’s not as if he’s treated you all that well, anyway.” So much for not getting any more gods to hate me.
“I guess it let me know from the start that I wasn’t exactly hers…” She sighed a little, thinking back to all of the times where she’d just been plain ignored – all of those screams for help that weren’t answered, all of those monster attacks that were automatically blamed on her without allowing her to explain, everything that led to her running away… all because of her step-mother. It had been fine when it was just herself and her dad, honestly. “But you don’t need to apologise for it. I’m who I am today thanks to all of that, so…” And she didn’t regret it one bit.
“But it’s okay to miss him. He cared for you,, even if you weren’t his own. You’re allowed to miss the people you love. No one says you shouldn’t.” Gods, who thought Annabeth would be talking about love to another demigod? Then again, it was only familial love… it wasn’t any of that mushy stuff that people associated Aphrodite with, she supposed.

“Well… people would try to say that you count as a child of Hades and put you on Nico’s team, but I say you’re Roman. And Roman doesn’t count. Welcome to our team!” She put an arm over Hazel’s shoulders. “We are going to kick some Percy and Nico ass with you on our side. Let’s make them regret ever thinking of facing us.”

Annabeth pursed her lips, a deep frown on her face as Luke spoke. She didn’t hate Luke – why in Hades would she? – but he had betrayed her. Hurt her. Done something to her that family shouldn’t do. And yet, she couldn’t bring herself to hurt him. She wasn’t vengeful like Thalia – sure, she was mad, but not vengeful. He’d died once to save them all. “Dying again would be a coward’s way out. You need to prove that you deserve my forgiveness. You need to earn it. You need to show me and everyone around me that you’re actually sorry, and not just saying it.”

“And you don’t think he’s smart enough to lie about something like this?” Though, Annabeth was frowning now. She was going to have a long talk with Malcolm about this, because now she was beginning to think that this was partly his fault. If not definitely.

“You’ve... shadow travelled to Chicago... multiple times?! No, I don’t even care about the first visit -- I care more about the multiple visits that followed.”
Tumblr media
“And do you know that? Are you one hundred percent sure that if you travel all the way to Chicago and back, even one time, you’ll still be human and not a shadow? Do you, Nico? Because I don’t think you’ve even been allowed to try shadow travelling to the other side of camp.”

“Cut the sarcasm. You tell people as soon as you arrive. Make a loud noise or something. Wear a chain of bells around your neck.”
“Not your—” She narrowed her eyes at him, shutting her book. “Look, di Angelo, books are interesting and informative, and you need to at least learn to alert people when you arrive at places! This is your fault!”
