Week 5 summary
This week i have been working on several points of this project. I have managed to get  animation well underway and ready for rendering. I have also maneged to finish my experimentation reel, animatic, storyboard and model sheet. I did find the animatic the most difficult and ended up drawing some of the frames by hand and them tracing over them in TV Paint.

Experimentation reel
For part of this project I have to create a experimentation reel. This is to showcase all of the issues that I have had during this project. Fortunately/ unfortunately I have encountered several issues with both animating and the rig. I will put all of these issues in my experimentation reel.

Staging the action
Before I complete the animation I looked at the actions that I need the robot to follow. I used both my story board and animistic for this and staggered each of the key poses with frames in between to smooth it out when I need to.
This is a great way for me to plot out the movements and work out the amount of frames I will need for the whole of the animation. While doing this I quickly realised that the walk of the robot would not work with real world physics. Because of the rigid design of the feet and the legs the walk has to be very clunky and almost resembles a stop motion animation. Fortunately this does fit in with the robot aesthetic.

Character model sheet
Today I finished of my character model sheet that I began at the beginning of the project. I focused on getting the paint and colours right on the model. I decided to give the drawing a rough edge with the fill bucket tool as I felt it made the drawing show the characters ruggedness.

Beginning animating
This week I have started to animate my robot. S far I have only finished the first 100 frames and it is not looking as good as I would have hoped. I am only putting in the key poses at the moment but it is still looking like it will need a lot more time than I had planed. with all of the other work that I have to get finished for submission next week I am going to have to work overtime on this piece.

“And Action”
I have all of the scene set up, the character rigged, lighting arranged and the box filled. Now I am ready to animated. This is the point where i find out if all of the hours I put into fixing my rigged payed off. So far I have only set up the model in a couple of key poses. I will now begin to fill in the inbetweens and pull the whole thing together.

Lighting
Now that I am preparing to animate one of the things that I want to be sure that looks good is the lighting for the scene. I have set up three light in the scene to make sure that the footage has some depth to it. This will create stronger shadows on the character showing the model more clearly.

Finishing up the model
Today i have completed my model and begun work on the scene for my animation. I am creating a very basic scene with a neutral background so that I am able to see up some simple lighting. So far I have set up three lights in the scene so that I know what the animation will look like. I have also created a simple box as the prop in the animation and places a yellow light inside so that it glows. I will be animating by the end of the week.

Week 4 summary
This week i have finished rigging my model. It is all completed now except from the texturing. I hope to have that finished once I get back in the new term but until then I have finished the model. Even with out texturing my model it is still capable of being animated. I have found the model building process hard at times. But I put this down to being new to the software. Although I have been able to fix the problems that I have faced.

Beginning to IK
Over Easter I am looking at creating an IK skeleton for the legs of my model so that they are easier to animate. Jon has explained how to IK and how it works and now I am going to apply it to my model. I have successfully managed to create the skeleton for my model now and it is ready to animate. I did not find the IK to difficult and after a refresher video inline i was able to complete it easily.

All I have left to do to my model now is texture it and finally animate once the new term starts.

Week 3 summary
After the mishap with my model during he week i am feeling a lot more confident in Maya. I have proven to myself that I am able to have a good go at solving any problems that I have and I can now apply theses skills to prevent it happening again in the future. It may have taken me some time and sleepless night to solve the issue but I managed to get it done and I can now move on with my model.

Grouping and beginning to rig
Now that I have managed to finish my models construction it is time to move onto rigging and grouping the shapes together so that I can animate. So far I am incredibly surprised with how quick I have been able to make the model. I have now started to group the shapes and move them to see if the figure is able to move in the way I need for the animation.
So far I have stumbled across a problem with my rig and I have found that the body parts extrude when rotated. I have never seen this problem and I have no idea what is wrong. to begin fixing the problem I undid all of the grouping and parenting that I had done to see if that fixed the problem and it did. I then moved all of the pieces away from the body and grouped them again to see if they began to show the same problem as before. There still seemed to be no issue so I put the robot back together. This is where the problem began again.
I looked in the internet to see if anybody else had had the same issue that I was having and I could not find a plausible reason why my model was doing it. I decided to take the model apart ungroup and unapparent all of the pieces and then delete all of the individual objects history. I then put it back together and freezed all transformations. and this seems to have worked. I am still unsure why my model did this but I seem to have fixed it.

Further character construction
After making the head and the eye (most challenging parts), I began to make the body. Because of the simple design I had chosen to go for it came together very quickly and I was able to finish the basic model during the day. I will now start to clean up some of the shapes so that if i want to UV map it I can.

Week 2 summary
looking at rigging has been very insightful this week and I found it fun in and oddly satisfying way. I also began the construction of my character. I quickly found parts of Maya that I did not know when I started this and I soon found parts of my model design that would not work when it came to animating. Because of this I can see there are parts of my character designing that I need to improve on if I am to continue with it in the fourth coming units.

Character construction
Beginning construction of my character. I am still fairly new too Maya and have only been shown the basics that I need to begin modeling. Now I am making a start on my first actual model which be used in my final piece for this project. I have to say I am finding it reasonably difficult with only minor hiccups along the way at this point. after understanding that I will potentially be UV mapping this model I am trying to make all of the shapes as clean as possible.
