If you're struggling with the cost of living right now (reasonable), this is your PSA to...
Google universities/colleges near you.
If you can't get out to more than one, look up which one has the highest tuition.
Look-up when the graduate date is
Drive neighborhoods near the university the week before graduation
So much stuff gets left out on the curb. Wealthy college students tend to prioritize convenience over money, so instead of carefully reselling their perfectly good stuff, they frequently give it away or put it out with the trash because that's easier than moving, reselling, or donating. Take advantage of this.
I furnished pretty much my entire apartment from college giveaways and yardsales.
What I got for free:
Mattress and box springs
2 10 ft area rugs
The massive 9-drawer chest (that has a label on the back that it was custom-made and shipped across the country) that my TV sits on.
Two 13 x 2 ft raised garden beds
My desk - just sanded it down and refinished it.
Three short stools
An organizer rack
Watering can
Tommy Bahama outdoor cooler (retails for $350)
Chairs
Shelves
What I got for cheap:
Two futons for $50
Custom coffee table with storage for $25
Three tall stools for $30

Startups are raking in up to $85,000 per day by recycling gold and copper from electronics thrown in the trash — e-waste 'gold mining' efforts are expanding
The United States alone only collects about 15% of all the e-waste for recycling that its citizens create on a daily basis.
The flip side to this situation is that e-waste is simultaneously becoming one of the most underrated "gold mines" of the modern era, thanks to all of the valuable metals housed inside most circuit boards. Worldwide, there's a projected $55-$60 billion worth of precious metals inside abandoned circuit boards just waiting to be collected.
Business Insider followed several scrappers and a small startup in Sydney, Australia, to see how much income these smaller entities can make from recycling e-waste. It found that solo scrappers can't make a full-time income out of e-waste yet, but scrappers who work in larger organizations, particularly organizations/startups with access to heavy machinery, can generate some serious income.
One such startup was Mint Innovation. Scrappers who find e-waste and drop it off at Mint Innovation can make as much as several thousand dollars per load. Mint Innovation has virtually mastered the art of metal extraction from e-waste, utilizing tons of special machines and a secret special sauce designed to break down electronic circuit boards and separate the valuable metals inside from unwanted plastics and other materials the metals are attached to.
The fully automated setup Mint Innovation has built can generate an impressive $85,000 of income per day from the raw metals it collects from e-waste. That translates into about $30 million in income per year.

I was in line at Aldi and this girl with two toddlers in front of me had her card declined and she looked so fucking sad and said “let me call my husband real quick” and it was only 18 dollars, so I just paid for it, and she was very sweet and then as she walked off, the lady behind me said `”You know that was probably a scam, right?” and like, even if it was, like what a sad fucking scam, right? 18 dollars at the Aldi. If you’re “scamming” me for some Tyson chicken and apple juice and cauliflower, then just take my fucking money.
“A scam” people are fucking wild.

Today's sewing was about fixing up some basics!
Tumblr media
First up, I put DIY ripstop in the important part of these new work shorts. (Yes they're solid dark black; I had to fuss with lighting to make this visible.) They're going to be replacing a pair that is too light-colored and shows marks where I sweat.

The next project was this Frankenstein shirt!
A few weeks ago, I dumpster-dove for some sealed bags of clothing. One keeper was a dark grey tank top with some lime green heathering and trim around the arms and neck. It's a men's XXL, so a size too long. I cut it shorter and kept the hem intact.
I also have a plain black shirt that I thrifted before realizing quite how short it was. I tried it, but as a busty woman working a cargo job, I didn't like everyone seeing most of my torso when I had to reach overhead.
Fortunately, both of these hems were almost exactly the same size. And it's jersey, so you can fudge it a little and no one will ever know. I used the smocking stitch on my machine because it's the only reliable stretch stitch that my lovely 1983 Kenmore can produce. It rumples a little, so I'll wash it to make it relax and then live with however it turns out. Success!

Increasing the diversity of native plants in a single urban green space resulted in a sevenfold increase in the number of insect species after three years, Australian researchers have found. According to the study’s authors, there had previously been “little empirical evidence of how specific greening actions may mitigate the detrimental effects of urbanisation”.
[...]
Researchers measured baseline insect numbers the year before greening began, when 12 indigenous plant species were introduced to the space, and subsequently conducted insect surveys for the following three years. They identified 94 insect species in total, 91 indigenous to the Australian state of Victoria. The researchers estimated that by the final year of the study there were about 7.3 times more insect species than originally present, even though only nine plant species remained. The team also found substantial increases in the number of predator and parasitoid insect species, which help to regulate populations of pest insects. “These are two key groups that provide a really good ecological signal that the trophic network and all the proper interactions are happening at the site,” Mata said.
