Did you know that February is National Snack Food Month? It’s the time to celebrate snacking! They come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. Some snacks are really good for you, and others…not so good. One of the healthiest and tastiest snacks are…yes, you got it right, pretzels!
Pretzels are not just delicious and versatile, but they’re also timeless. When Catholic monks created the first pretzels from leftover dough it was serendipity in its purest form. The unique knot shape represented the Holy Trinity and pretzels had a significance far beyond being just a snack. For example, during the 17th Century pretzels symbolized the bond of marriage. Couples broke the pretzel like a wishbone, made a wish, and then ate it to symbolize their unity.
There are both soft pretzels and hard pretzels. Today, soft pretzels are popular at carnivals, sporting events, and festivals. Hard pretzels are a relatively recent addition to the pretzel family, and are readily available at grocery stores and specialty markets.
As legend would have it, in the 1600s, a Pennsylvania baker forgot a batch of pretzels in the oven. When the baker sampled the over-baked treats, he found them to be dark and hard, but crunchy and delicious. And the hard pretzel was born! Today, hard pretzels are one of the most popular snack foods in the United States.
While, quite often, snacks have a bad reputation for being unhealthy, there are plenty of snacks that are good for you. Certain snacks are a great source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, proteins, healthier fats, and carbohydrates. Unsalted pretzels made of whole wheat flour with added protein and vitamins are a great and healthy snacking option. So, the next time you’re shopping in the snack food aisle, you just need to be more aware of the ingredients and quality of your snack foods.
You can also think of snacks, especially pretzels as a mini meal. Pretzels are high in both taste and nutrition and when you snack on pretzels between meals it gives your body that sustainable energy needed to make it to that next meal. And, when you pair pretzels with cheese, yogurt, or some other protein source, they take on a whole new level of health. Here are some of our favorite pretzel snacks!
While pretzels are low in fat and protein and high in carbs, they also contain some fiber and B vitamins. This is because most pretzels are made of wheat flour, which is mostly composed of carbs. It is important that while you do not eat too many carbs, you eat the right amount. This is because your body breaks down carbs into sugars that it uses for energy. Also, fiber improves gut health and relieves digestive conditions such as constipation.
At OMG! Pretzels, our pretzels are made of sourdough, which has more nutritional value. While sourdough bread and snacks are made from the same flour as other types of bread and snacks, the fermentation process improves its nutritional value in several ways. It is a whole grain bread, and so contains a good amount of minerals, such as potassium, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc.
There are several ways you can celebrate pretzels during National Snack Food Month. You can eat pretzels. You can go to your local bakery for chewy pretzels or to your grocery store for hard pretzel sticks. Or you can shop OMG! Pretzels for ridiculously delicious gourmet flavored pretzels. We have 8 flavors in all, including our newest additions Salty Butterscotch Pretzels, Lemon Pepper Pretzels, and Sweet Chili Pretzels.
If you want to get creative, make your own pretzels or add some of our pretzels to your favourite recipes. How about baking a cheese-stuffed pizza pretzel? The recipes for homemade pretzels are only limited by your imagination. And don’t forget to make the accompanying dip or sauce as well!
OMG! Pretzels will fulfil all those pretzel cravings and make National Snack Food Month more fun and delicious. Based in Pennsylvania, OMG! Pretzels was founded by a mother-daughter team. Our ridiculously delicious pretzels are responsible for our growth. So, the next time you want to order a batch of scrumptious pretzels, shop online or a retail store near you for your favorite flavors and enjoy the taste and experience like no other. After all, that’s what snacking during National Snack Food Month is all about!

Adventurously Flavored Pretzels for Every Taste and Occasion
When you think of an occasion, stress can set in because you are thinking of all the work you have to do – menu planning, shopping, getting the house ready, and making sure everyone has a great time. But it doesn’t have to be that way. OMG! Pretzels have a long history of helping make every occasion delicious and fun. Our innovative and bold flavored pretzel bites are perfect for every taste and occasion.
Our Homey Beginning
Lynn Kriebel, Co-Owner and Chief Baker of OMG! Pretzels, started making flavored gourmet sourdough pretzel nuggets decades ago when her children were growing up. Garlic pretzels were the first flavor and still a favorite of her eldest son. “I’d always make the pretzels and have them out for afterschool snacks,” shares Lynn. “The kids’ friends would come over and love the pretzels snacks also, so eventually I started using them when I entertained.”
As Lynn’s children grew up, they started to suggest she try and sell her ridiculously delicious pretzel bites. So, seven years ago, Lynn approached a local speciality store and the rest, as they say, is history! Now OMG! Pretzels are available nationwide in various retail stores, online, and on Amazon.
And, we’ve gone from one flavor – our flagship offering, Garlic Pretzels – to eight adventurous flavors, including: Sweet & Salty, Chesapeake Spice, Cheddar Jalapeno, Sweet & Spicy, Lemon Pepper, Salty Butterscotch, and Sweet Chili.
Flavor Innovation
How do we do it? Lynn uses inspiration from a lot of different places. “Sometimes it’s from cooking or a new dish I try and wanting to incorporate those flavor combinations. Other times I read an article and think, that could fun and I just mix up the flavors from there,” she says.
After people started loving the Garlic Pretzels, Lynn thought she needed a new flavor and looked to the past for flavor inspiration. “I started developing the Sweet & Salty when I thought about summers when my kids were growing up. Their grandfather would always come and visit and make them cinnamon sugar toast. That’s the flavor foundation for the Sweet & Salty Pretzels.”
One of her sister-in-law’s famous appetizers led to one of our newest flavors – Lemon Pepper. “She always makes these little open-faced sandwiches with small squares of pumpernickel bread, mayonnaise and cucumber. Then, she sprinkles a little lemon pepper on top. I thought, lemon pepper pretzels would add a nice crunch to the bite, so started working on the new flavor for our sourdough pretzel bites.”
Sometimes Lynn uses suggestions from family and friends to create new pretzel flavors. “One of my daughters mentioned how much people love the flavors in seafood seasonings like McCormick’s Old Bay blend and that’s how the Chesapeake Spice Pretzels came about.”
Lynn’s Entertaining Tips
When you’re entertaining, Lynn recommends using the people who are coming and the type of occasion or get together as the foundation for the rest of your planning. “If I’m just serving appetizers and drinks for watching a big game like the Superbowl, I plan things differently than if it’s an elegant dinner party,” she notes. “Easy entertaining is key. What’s the point in having people over if you don’t get to have fun with them.”
No matter the occasion, Lynn loves to offer guests various flavors of our sourdough pretzel bites because they are so versatile and are an easy way to add a lot of flavor. Different flavored pretzels pair well with beer and wine, so she takes that into account as well.
Lynn also recommends having some go-to recipes and ready-made options. For instance, she always puts out some pretzels for when people are arriving just for a little something to much on regardless of the occasion. “I always label the flavors of pretzels, as well as any cheeses or dips I use with them, so people know what they are eating,” she says. “I like to place the food around your entertaining space so it’s interactive and fun.”
“If I’m serving dinner, I also plan small hors d’oeuvres and dessert. I start planning a week ahead of time, so I don’t leave all the work for the day of the dinner party,” Lynn shares. “I think about what I want to serve as the entrée first and then plan the appetizer and dessert. I want the whole menu to be cohesive.” This is how she divides the work:
Clean the house three to four days before.
Make the flower arrangement or centerpiece two days before.
Choose make-ahead side dishes and desserts that can be prepared two to three days in advance and warmed up the day of, so you can relax and be with people not in the kitchen the whole time.
Set the table the night before or the morning of your event.
No matter your occasion or the flavors in your menu, there’s an OMG! Pretzels variety that can add bold flavor and texture to your dishes. For brunch, Lynn adds Sweet & Salty to baked French toast casserole or Chesapeake Spice Pretzels to an egg casserole for a fun and crunchy topping. For dessert, she adds Sweet Chili pretzels between layers of chocolate cake for a surprise crunch and little heat. Lynn’s final words of advice: Mix it up, try new things, and have fun!

21 Pretzel Snacks the Whole Family Will Love
Tumblr media
Happy 2021! We all have high hopes that this year will be better than the last. OMG! Pretzels is here to give you some fun and easy ideas that will make snack time ridiculously delicious and full of crunchy pretzel goodness.
Let’s start things off with some perfect pretzel snack pairings:
Pretzels and Nut Butter. Pick your favorite nut butter – almond, cashew, peanut (we know it’s not really a nut) – and add a little dab onto the OMG! Pretzels flavor of your choice. This snack is great for kids and adds some protein to snack time. For a sweet treat, substitute cookie butter, also known as Speculous spread for the nut butter to pair with our Sweet & Salty Pretzels.
Pretzels and Yogurt. While you could use this as a breakfast idea, we also love it for a great pretzel snack. If you want to make it fancy, you can layer the yogurt and pretzels parfait-style or keep it simple by just adding crushed pretzels to the top of your yogurt. You can even leave it in the container if you’re looking for an on the go snack option.
Pretzels and Hummus. This is a pretty classic pretzel snacking option. Hummus adds protein and these days with so many flavor options for hummus and our variety of OMG! Pretzels flavors, the sky is the limit on combinations. Chocolate hummus with Sweet Chili Pretzels, roasted pepper hummus with Garlic Pretzels, garlic hummus with Lemon Pepper Pretzels… the list goes on and on.
Pretzels and Avocado. You can do slices of avocado or mash it up for more of a guacamole feel; either way, paired with one of OMG! Pretzels’ savory sourdough pretzel nuggets, you have the ultimate pretzel snack in one bite. Pretzels and Cheese. This is another healthy snack idea that has a lot of options. You can pair the flavored pretzels of your choice with a complimentary cheese – think Garlic Pretzels and fresh mozzarella or Chesapeake Spice with creamy Havarti. You could also shake up snack time with Sweet & Spicy Pretzels mixed in with cottage cheese.
If you prefer amazing pretzel snacks you can just munch on out of a container, we’ve got you covered with just a little bit of prep work. All you need is a big zipper-top plastic bag or other air-tight plastic container, then simply mix up the ingredients and get to snacking!
Here are some ideas for bold and innovative trail mixes you can easily put together with various OMG! Pretzels sourdough bites.
Italian Inspired Trail Mix. Start with our Garlic Pretzels and add roasted chickpeas, pine nuts, and oven dried tomatoes for a savory twist on trail mix.
Tex Mex Trail Mix. Our Cheddar Jalapeno Pretzels are the star of this trail mix. We suggest adding pepitas, dried mango, and a handful of corn chips for a great pretzel snack.
Seaside Trail Mix. Another savory pretzel snack, this idea features our Chesapeake Spice gourmet pretzel bites. Throw in some oyster crackers, honey-roasted peanuts, crispy mushroom chips and for a flavor-forward snack.
Sunshine Trail Mix. Lemon Pepper Pretzels are the base of this pretzel snack. Add in banana chips, pistachios, and golden raisins to round out the trail mix.
Sweet & Salty Trail Mix. The perfect pretzel snack for when you want a little of something sweet and a little of something salty. Start with our Sweet & Salty Pretzels, then add some mini chocolate chips, cashews, and dried cherries. Your tastebuds will thank you!
Old Fashioned Trail Mix. For a taste of home, use our Salty Butterscotch Pretzels in this trail mix. Use shredded coconut, slivered almonds, and a few white chocolate chips.
Sweet & Spicy Trail Mix. This pretzel snack uses macadamia nuts, dark chocolate chips, and raisins paired with our Sweet & Spicy Pretzels for a satisfying pretzel snack.
Asian Inspired Trail Mix. Sesame sticks, dried pineapple, and wasabi peas along with our Sweet Chili Pretzels make the perfect pretzel trail mix. Sometimes pretzel snacks are more fun with a dip. Here are some yummy options that highlight a few OMG! Pretzels flavored sourdough pretzel bites.
Sweet Cream Cheese Dip. A great pretzel snack option for any of our sweet-flavored gourmet pretzel nuggets, you can modify this to meet your needs. Simply whip room temperature cream cheese with a half teaspoon of vanilla and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and then add in cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg or other spices to complete this great pretzel snack dip.
Chocolate Hazelnut Dip. This pretzel snack dip couldn’t be easier. With an electric mixer, blend store bought chocolate hazelnut spread with 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and you’re off to snacking heaven.
Easy Chocolate Dip. All you need for this one are chocolate chips – you choose the variety (dark, white, milk, semi-sweet will all work) – and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Warm up the coconut oil and add in about 6 ounces of your chocolate and stir to combine. If the chocolate doesn’t melt right away, you can heat in the microwave at 20-second intervals. Then, pair with Sweet & Salty or Sweet Chili Pretzels and enjoy.
Green Goddess Dip. This herbaceous dip can use sour cream, Greek yogurt or full-fat coconut milk as a base. Simply add lemon juice and a variety of fresh herbs – we recommend garlic, parsley, chives, and basil – into a food processor and blend until smooth. If you want to boost the health factor, avocado is a great bonus ingredient to this pretzel snack dip.
Onion Dip. Again, you can use a few base options for this dip, including sour cream and Greek yogurt. You can opt for the homemade route with caramelized onions and herbs or you can get a store-bought onion soup mix. Either way, this slightly savory and slightly sweet dip is delicious with our Garlic Pretzels and our Chesapeake Spice Pretzels.
Honey Mustard Dip. This pretzel snack dip is also versatile. You can boost a store-bought honey mustard with some chili sauce for a little spice or thicken it with a little mayonnaise. You can also control the flavor with a homemade version; for lots of kick, use whole grain mustard and for a little fun, use a smoked honey.
Cheese Dip. Who doesn’t love warm, gooey cheese? Get some store-bought help with your favorite variety of cheese dip and then use our Cheddar Jalapeno Pretzels for the ultimate cheesy pretzel snack!
Orange Glaze Dip. To close out our awesome pretzel snack ideas, here’s a sweet pretzel dip. You need 1 cup of confectioner’s sugar, 2 tablespoons of orange juice and the zest of an orange. Simply mix. If you want the glaze to be thinner, add a bit more orange juice.
No matter which pretzel snacks you try, we hope these ideas help you kick off 2021 with some ridiculously delicious snacks. Our gourmet sourdough pretzel bites give you a great crunch and bold flavor every time. Happy snacking!

Bread and bread-derivatives are the most staple foods and most of us have them in some form or the other, almost every day. Bread and bread-derivatives come in a myriad of different varieties. The most common variety is the commercial, yeast-based bread. Another form is sourdough bread.
In both, the fermentation process is very different. In commercial bread, the yeast is sugar-based and derived from molasses. In sourdough bread, wild yeast is used for fermentation. Also, the fermentation time for sourdough bread is much, much longer than that for commercial, yeast-based bread.
Sourdough bread, one of the healthiest breads, is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. A recent study showed that the market value for sourdough bread increased from US $298.7 million in 2014 to US $2.4 billion in 2018. Sourdough bread is a slowly fermented bread that is not only delicious, but also has a history dating back to 3000 BC in ancient Egypt. In this article, we’ll talk about
why sourdough bread and snacks are best over commercial, yeast-based bread and snacks
Sourdough bread and snacks have more nutritional value:
Sourdough bread and snacks are easier to digest:
Sourdough bread and snacks may be better for blood sugar control:
Sourdough bread and snacks do not spoil or stale easily:
Sourdough bread and snacks act as a prebiotic and a probiotic:
While sourdough bread and snacks are made from the same flour as other types of bread and snacks, the fermentation process improves its nutritional value in several ways. It is a whole grain bread, and so contains a good amount of minerals, such as potassium, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc. However, the absorption of these minerals is limited by the presence of phytic acid, also called phytate. But in sourdough bread and snacks, the lactic acid present, lowers the bread’s pH, thereby helping to degrade phytates. This significantly increases the bread’s nutritional value. Also, studies show that the lactic acid present in sourdough bread and snacks releases antioxidants during sourdough fermentation. The latter also increases folate levels in the bread. Finally, the sourdough bread’s longer fermentation time helps improve the flavour and texture of this whole-grain bread. This makes many people opt for sourdough bread and snacks, thereby consuming a lot of fiber and nutrients.
Not only do sourdough bread and snacks have more nutritional value than commercial, yeast-based bread and snacks, they are also easier to digest. One of the reasons is that sourdough fermentation degrades gluten, which is a type of protein found in certain grains. Gluten can cause digestive problems in persons who are sensitive or allergic to it. Sourdough’s low gluten content may make it easier to digest for those allergic to gluten, without the usual symptoms, such as stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. However, sourdough bread or snacks containing wheat, barley, or rye should be avoided by people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. There are gluten-free sourdough options that people with gluten tolerance or celiac disease can try.
Sourdough bread and snacks may have a better effect on blood sugar and insulin levels than other types of bread and bread-derivatives. Researchers believe that the fermentation process to make sourdough bread and snacks may modify the structure of carb molecules. This can reduce the bread’s glycemic index (GI) and slows down the speed at which sugar enters the bloodstream. The GI is an index that measures how a food affects blood sugar levels. Foods having a lower GI are less likely to produce a spike in blood sugar levels. Also, the lactic acid bacteria found in the dough of sourdough bread and snacks produce organic acids during fermentation. These acids may delay stomach emptying and prevent a spike in blood sugar in a way that is similar to vinegar. Overall, those who consumed sourdough bread and snacks had lower blood sugar and insulin levels than those who consumed commercial, yeast-based breads and snacks.
Sourdough bread and snacks undergo a longer period of fermentation than commercial, yeast-based bread and snacks. They also retain their original moisture for longer than commercial bread and snacks. Both sourdough bread and snacks do not get stale for a really long time and retain their freshness for a significantly longer time than commercial, yeast-based bread or snacks.
Prebiotics are nutrients that feed the beneficial bacteria in your digestive system. Probiotics, on the other hand, are beneficial bacteria found in certain foods and supplements. Both of these help keep the gut healthy and improve digestion. They do this by increasing the availability of nutrients. Sourdough acts as a prebiotic and a probiotic in exactly this same way.
You can use the sourdough recipe to create everything from bread to pretzels. This is exactly what OMG Pretzels has been doing since 2014. OMG Pretzels creates delicious sourdough and other pretzels using their own proprietary recipes. Once you taste their pretzels, you will keep coming back for more…and more…and more…
Sourdough bread and sourdough snacks are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Not only are they a healthy snacking alternative, but what’s more, they taste simply delicious. So, the next time you want to try out sourdough bread or then, create your very own sourdough recipe, do not hesitate, but just dive right into it. And if you want sourdough pretzels you know where to go…OMG Pretzels!
