Malevolent would never work if set in the modern day because Arthur would likely have the vocabulary to describe his sexuality and mental state. His character only works as a 1930s repressed British Catholic.

If Arthur was self-aware he would be too mentally stable. Not out here with repressed sadistic tendencies and constant underlying guilt.

what I think malevolent characters smell like

arthur - sweat and blood and b.o. but he tries his best with the hand he’s been dealt no pun intended

john - i think human john would be really into fragrance. he just loves good smelling stuff. something kinda smoky and woodsy and mysterious and a little odd, he would also like smelling sweet like a floral sweet

charlie - ik he smells delectable I can’t explain it. cigarette smoke and coffee at first, he does wear cologne you just have to be close enough to smell it. something clean and warm and a little spicy

oscar - I need to tell a story for this one. I was house sitting a few weeks ago and I had to water the plants with a hose. I got to a bucket full of basil. it was raining, trees all around, the dogs were outside with me. I watered the basil, I sniffed it, and by god was it such a glorious smell, green and petrichor and damp soil. oscar smells like that + incense and bergamot

marie - persian woods by avon. trust me. it smells like grandma perfume in the best way, like a forest full of berries

collins - the slightly foreboding smell of a basement + something like cedarwood. I feel like collins smells good but in the same way some people think gasoline smells good. if that makes sense

kayne - blood, soil, and something burning. I like to think in part 52 arthur knew for sure that kayne had arrived before john even told him because of the smell
