i actually never ever want AO3 to be censored bc nothing is more fun than reading the tags on a fic and going “huh. didn’t know there was a market for that.”

Okay I watched KPop Demon Hunters and here’s my take on the best songs based solely on how much I like them, as well as my favorite line from each song.
There are some spoilers for the movie
1) My Idol wasn’t originally my favorite but after listening to the soundtrack a bunch it is the one I enjoy the most. The lyrics just go so hard and the lines about shame and keeping it out of sight seem to be direct references to what Rumi went through and caused all of this to happen. Also the beat just goes so hard, which I think is the biggest factor of why it’s my favorite tbh.
Favorite line is “I will make you free, when you’re all apart of me” because that line is clearly Gwi-Ma coming through, and that exactly the lie he sold to Jinu, that he could free him of his struggles if he just sold his soul to Gwi-Ma. Honorable mention to the line “any time it hurts, play another verse; I can be your sanctuary” because that’s exactly what I do if I’m upset, I listen to music, particularly depressing music because it helps me calm down, and this song is that exact vibe, and it was startling to come to the realization that yeah, I’d fall for this.
2) What It Sounds Like used to be my favorite but is now my second favorite, even though I think it’s probably a better song for the movie than My Idol. My favorite line “the song we couldn’t write, this is what it sounds like.” It really hit home to point that this was what they were building towards, but they couldn’t get there yet because they weren’t be truthful towards each other.
The music of the song was also really good. And the fact that the melody of Golden was in the piece, showing that this was a continuation of their journey from Golden? Beautiful. I also just love a good build-up in a song to show character development, it’s why I Am Moana is my favorite song from Moana
3) I think Free was my next favorite. My favorite line was “what if we both try fighting what we’re running from” because it’s just a really good message. Rumi and Jinu (but mainly Rumi) have been trying so desperately to avoid thinking about their shame, and realizing that if it’s not working, maybe they need to try to do something different.
As for music, I also really like how their voices go together. It’s a really good duet. I also really enjoyed how the male voice was higher pitched than the female voice, it’s usually the opposite and I really liked how the voices meshed with each other. And honorable mention to the line “between imposter and this monster I’ve been lost inside my head” because I just like how Jinu sings it.
4) Golden is next because it’s genuinely a great way to show where their characters are now, and it’s what they consider to be their highest potential (until they find they can go higher with What It Sounds Like).
My favorite line is predictably “put these patterns all in the past now, and finally live like the girl they all see.” I think it’s an innocuous line that could refer to the girls’ patterns of behavior in the past since the song is about their growth as people. But we know in context that it has a much more literal meaning because of Rumi’s patterns. Also the song just slaps. It’s so close to being 3rd and honestly my opinion could still change, but for now it’s 4th
5) How It’s Done is still a good song even if it’s not in the top half of my rankings. Favorite line is “making fear afraid to breathe” because god, what a powerful line. To make the literal concept of free be afraid? That’s Confidence right there. It’s got the same vibes as “bleeding isn’t in my blood” but even more hardcore.
The song itself is a good way of introducing them and how they fight demons, even though it doesn’t have as much plot to it. But it establishes how they operate and sets up the rest of the movie.
6) Takedown is amazing because of how it’s used in the movie. It being their attempt to take down the Saha Boys, only for the Saha Boys to use it to take down Rumi specifically. I do think that this was the best utilized song in the movie by far. It’s just so low because it was played a bunch in the movie and I got a little tired of it, but it’s still extremely good.
Favorite line is “so how, how can you sleep, or live with yourself, a broken soul trapped in the nastinest shell” because I’d imagine that’s exactly how Rumi thinks of herself, and the core of her inner conflict. She can’t live with herself, that’s why she never relaxed. She feels broken because she’s part demon, and the patterns are her shell. But in general the whole song has a lot of Rumi’s self-hatred in it, which is why it works to well. I’m realizing that I have a lot of praise for this song even if it’s towards the bottom in my ranking, and that it’s literally just because of how repetitive it was in the movie.
7) Very last place is Soda Pop. The biggest reason is because I hate the slurping sounds in the song. Also there’s no point to the song. I mean obviously there is, the Saja Boys need to have a catchy song to become popular, but there’s no meaning behind the song. There’s no reason it had to be about soda pop. My only thought is that it’s maybe to say that they’re going to drink peoples’ souls like soda pop, but that’s still pretty weak compared to the imagery of the rest of the songs.
No favorite line because none of the lyrics hit hard enough to make any impact on me. The song was just a generic pop song that sounds really good without actually actually having anything interesting going on with it.
There were other songs that were in the movie but I only wanted to do the ones sung by actual characters in the movie.
So anyway that’s what I thought. Uh, let me know if you agree or disagree I guess? I’m open to hearing other people’s opinions

Rumi gives such oblivious workaholic bisexual energy. Zoey and Mira could be making out like right beside her and she’s just working her sword forms. She doesn’t know she’s been a polyamorous lesbian relationship for the last 4 years

This is one of those true, declassified government things that always sounds made up but one of the things Henry Kissinger did with his career was use the CIA to help turn small, prosperous socialist nations into fascist dictatorships just to keep those nations powerless and possibly to keep socialist systems *looking* doomed and futile to the American public, like maybe just to scare Americans out of demanding better infrastructure or universal income. Yes it sounds like an insane conspiracy theory a maniac would invent. It also happened multiple times and several generations of people around the world are still living in misery because of it.
