The fungi goes through sexual fusion and then germinates its basidiospores which form their primary mycelium, eventually leading to the secondary mycelium and the fruiting body. Then the cap, gills, stalk and base grow and the process repeats itself.

reproduce asexually only
sexual reproduction has never been observed by scientists
thus, much of the life cycle remains a mystery to most
they produce their spores asexually

Transversely septate basidium. This basidium resembles hyphal cells, with sterigmata . Because of its lack of differentiation, this was once considered to be a primitive basidium.

Cruciate-septate basidium. This basidium is divided into four chambers. The basidium is named for the "cross" that can be seen when viewed,from above, through the microscope.
