Blood, thicker than water
By: Frances Dominique Pascual
A great performance by Yoon Yoo-jung as Granny Gye-choon and Kim Go-eun portraying the granddaughter Hye-ji is what this film more heartfelt than it could ever be. From the toughness that Hye-ji had and how the old lady inspired her in the long run and the grandmother's great, great love for her 12-year-lost granddaughter.
From the moment that Granny Gye-choon lost Hye-ji in the busy streets of the market even to the slightest glimpse of hope and light she's holding to, where her beloved granddaughter would come back in that same exact house where they live in no definite time. I only have three words—it was heartfelt.
The overflowing joy she had when they were informed that Hye-ji was found, to her daily routine of waking up in the morning to work even at her age, her love for Hye-ji made me realized that I may not see how my parents or grandparents do for me each and every day but I'm very sure they're doing sacrifices to sustain my needs and wants in any way.
At the end, this film also broke my heart to pieces where the grandmother knew it before she even realized that it was not Hye-ji. The fact that she still denied it even when the truth was right in front of her—like a slap in the face.
This movie touched my heart, my soft spot, for i really have a sensitive spot for the aged. The cruelty of reality to the people who deserved nothing but the best in the world after their years of hardwork here on Earth.
On the other side, i learned two things: one—you don't need to be directly related to the person to feel love towards another and to have them as your family, and two—to appreciate your parents and grandparents why you still have time. Who are we kidding here? They are not getting any younger, and we do not know what will happen in when. So treasure, love it, give it inportance while it is still there.
