She had been crying. And trying to hide it too. But there was a certain smile she had when her eyes were a bit misty and she wanted you to believe everything was okay. Her eyes seemed darker when she cried. And she stared a little too long when she smiled, trying so hard to convince you she was fine. Maybe he should have played off not hearing her. He thought she had just been angry, not this upset. It made him angry with that alien Doctor whenever he catch her crying or daydreaming about something. When she’d get detention in school because she’d get caught looking out the window more than once. And he’d do something stupid, on purpose, like pulling out a stick of gum and start chewing it. He spent a good amount of pocket money on chewing gum because the teacher would always end up taking the whole pack.
She pulled him inside and he caught the jacket from her as she bounded upstairs. He didn’t follow her. He would have if she told him to but it seemed she was planning on being double quick about it. He shook off his jacket a little before putting it back on and wandered into the hall to wait for her. He looked at the photos of little Amelia Pond. Baby pictures and her graduation picture… An old photo of Sharon’s parents. Rory couldn’t remember whose sister she was… Or Amy’s parents names… He felt terrible. But he didn’t really remember them either, or even what happened to them…
He looked up as she called his name, smiling as she came straight for him and humming happily, if a bit surprised, into her kiss. He was glad she was in a better mood. Or putting on a better mood for him. He’d sort it out soon enough. He waited for her to shut the door behind her and put his arm around her waist, though loosely so she wouldn’t feel he was being too clingy and they could walk with relative ease.
“At least it’s not super cold. I rather like walking in the rain. What’s this amazing invention you’ve brought to keep the rain off? You could make millions off that.” He joked, pointing out the fact he obviously hadn’t brought his own.
Amy popped open the umbrella as they headed out of the house, just as the rain continued to fall. She laughed, he usually always made her laugh. It was one of the whole reasons she’d fallen in love with him at such a young age - the fact that he could always make her laugh and brighten her mood. Even now as she tried to not be so angry about the Doctor ditching her, Rory made it all the more better. And truthfully, she was grateful for him. “Oi, shut up, Rory!” Amy laughed, shoving his shoulder just a little while they walked along the path to the gate. “Technically, we’re not walking in the rain if we’ve got this,” she hummed, spinning the umbrella just a bit before she handed it over to him and slipped her arms through his arm, clinging to him.
As they walked, Amy rested her chin against his shoulder, smiling at him. “Rory,” she mused, lifting her head. “You’ve waited for me, all those times I told you to go away, you always came back. How come?” Dumb question, she knew that. She knew that he loved her. But, she just wanted to hear him say it. Even as she glanced down and noticed that she should really be wearing the engagement ring on her finger. Doesn't’ matter. No matter what happened tonight, Amy was going to give Rory the answer he’d been waiting for.
She wanted to. It wasn’t fair that he was waiting all this time for her to say a three letter word. Actually, she wanted to say yes the moment he asked her.
Bloody Doctor and his traveling adventures. If he was here right now, she’d punch him. All of this was his fault. All of it. If only she could stop thinking about him.

They had been dating for years, ever since Rory had gotten a bit drunk at a Halloween costume party after graduation. He’d finally admitted to Amy he’d been in love with her since they were little. And he’d done it while dressed like a Roman Centurion. The fact that she had seemed so completely surprised by his proposal was... a little irritating. But he could be patient. Hell, he was very patient when it came to Amy Pond. He knew her better than anyone, he was aware of more insecurity than she knew. More than she let on. He was patient and he was observant. When he held her hand and they took walks at night, he’d watch her eyes drift towards the stars. Inwardly, he would sigh, outwardly he’d squeeze her hand, smile and hopefully bring her back down to earth. With him. He was here. The Doctor wasn’t. He made her laugh, the Doctor did just the opposite by letting her down. Rory promised he would never do that.
It was starting to rain, just barely, and Dad had warned him about going out without an umbrella. But Amy didn’t live that far away and the diner they were supposed to go to tonight wasn’t far either. Everything was more or less walking distance. Or biking distance. Maybe he should’ve biked here...
If he had, Rory wouldn’t have been standing at the back garden gate watching the girl he love shout at the sky. For a brief second, he thought she meant him. That she was angry with him for some reason. But, of course, it wasn’t Rory. He knew he’d always be a second thought, a replacement or even a place holder, worse yet, for the Raggedy Doctor. He moved quietly, taking several steps backwards towards the side of the house so he could call her name without being too close. Pretend like he hadn’t heard her yelling at the alien who was unlikely to come back any time soon.
And then he changed his mind. And snuck back towards the gate, opening it up. It rattled, old wood with weeds growing into the fence. It was overgrown and since taking night shifts at the hospital, he couldn’t come over and do much work on it. And Dad wouldn’t. Not even for Amy or his high standards of gardening. Whatever Dad and Amy’s Aunt Sharon had argued about must’ve been massive. Rory suspected it was about them. Sharon never seemed to like Rory much. He never could figure out why.
“Yeah, we know that’s not true...” Rory offered jokingly, struggling to move the gate back before giving up and walking towards her. She was still in her jim-jams. Well, it wasn’t the first time the Doctor had preoccupied her so much she’d forgotten about plans with Rory. Or Rory in general. He was oddly, easily forgettable. School trips, Blind man’s Bluff... his own mother. He’d accepted that too, long ago.
“Do you just want to stay in?” The rain was starting a bit harder now and Rory took off his jacket to put over Amy’s shoulders. “I don’t mind that.” It was his night off. He just wanted to spend it with his not exactly fiancé.
Everything hurt. Mostly her heart. It was why she couldn’t give Rory an answer because another man had broken it. But what hurt the most was the fact that she put all of her trust into a man who had left her before. And deep down, she knew he was too busy for her. The Doctor would always be too busy for her. Him and his stupid blue box. She remembered the first time it broke the shed in her aunt’s yard – she stared at that broken shed for hours, weeks in the hopes of him returning to her. Amy had so much hope, wasted so much of it on him, and he wasn’t coming back for her.
There was one boy who always came back for her though. One who she really needed to stop taking for granted.
Lifting her head when she heard him, Amy sniffled, wiping the tears on the back of her sleeve. “Rory.” Amy swallowed the lump in her throat as she watched him fiddle with the gate to get into the yard. She snickered with a shake of her head at him. Whether he was joking or not, Amy didn’t care. They both knew that she wanted the Doctor to come back, no matter what words spilled from her lips. Really, she just wished that she could focus on Rory Williams and no one else right now. It wasn’t fair how she treated him. He deserved so much better than her; so much better.
Tilting her head back, Amy glanced up to her boyfriend when he cloaked his jacket over her shoulders, her red hair starting to frizz in the rainy evening. Amy blinked the water out of her eyes, a mix of tears and rain as she sniffled again. “No, c’mon, let’s get outuva here.” She hated that she’d forgotten about another one of their dates. Well, it wasn’t an actual date, it was just a hang out. But, she was hungry, she’d even forgot to eat, too. Hell, if she would’ve went to bed without eating, she’d be more grumpy in the morning than usual.
Grabbing his hand, Amy pulled herself to her feet, not caring that her pants were splashed with dirt, or that it was even starting to rain harder. “Lemme just go change.” Without even allowing him to protest, Amy pulled him inside and shrugged his jacket off, tossing it over his shoulder as she started for the stairs to head to her bedroom.
Pulling her red hair back into a ponytail, Amy quickly discarded of her jammies and slipped on fresh clothes from her drawers, two mismatched socks for now and her boots. She’d be lying to herself if she said she wasn’t happy he came by. Maybe she needed to finally give him her answer tonight. That little three letter word that changed almost everyone’s lives for the better. It lifted her spirits just a bit as she made her way down the stairs. “Rory,” she called as she hurried down the stairs, finding him in the hallway she happily grabbed onto his hand and pulled him in for a kiss. “Let’s go, I’m starvin’ and I know you probably are too.” Before they headed out, she slipped her coat on and grabbed an umbrella large enough for the both of them.

Eleven weeks ago Rory proposed. What was wrong with him? Amy thought. Her first through really, when he got down on one knee and showed her the ring. Did he really want to be with her, or was it because he was jealous? Was he jealous? Every time she brought up the Doctor, she’d notice his eyes roll. Like he didn’t want to hear it, or he was just waiting for her to say something about the mad man in a box. So why on earth did he even propose in the first place?
Rory had been waiting for an answer for 2 and a half months, an answer from Amy which she was sure he hoped was a yes. She wanted to say yes straight away, at least she thought she wanted to. She was just so angry, not at Rory, but at The Doctor. Again, he left her! 12 years she waited for him, only for him to return and then leave again. It’s been another year and a half, soon going on 14 years. 14 years and 4 psychiatrists later and she still couldn’t believe the anger she felt toward him. Everyone will always end up leaving her, isn’t that how it’s going to go? First her parents, then the Doctor, soon Rory would too, she’s sure of it.
But, if The Doctor really wanted to be her friend, why did he keep leaving her behind?! She couldn’t just take on alien bad guys like Prisoner Zero without him, didn’t he realize that?!
“I’m not a policewoman, I’m a kissogram!” The memory flooded her mind as she stared at the police costume hanging in her closet. The nurse in front of it, and the nun behind it in the back, all hanging up, a past she didn’t want to remember anymore. Softly, Amy shut the door and sniffled, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand until she caught a glimpse of the backyard through her window.
Was this just some game that he played with people to get their hopes up for an adventure before he just disappeared forever without warning?
Amy didn’t cry as much as she used to when she was a little girl, but the tears that did fall were of anger.
Yanking the door open to the backyard, Amy stormed out onto the grass and stared up at the evening sky full of twinkling stars. “If you’re even thinking about coming back, don’t!” She shouted, sea glass colored eyes searched through the mass of blackish-blue sky. “I don’t want you here!” It wasn’t like anyone could hear her, and if they did, nothing would’ve changed, they all thought she was crazy, the girl with the imaginary best friend; her raggedy man.
She didn’t mean it though. She did want him to come back, Amy did want to travel in his box with him just like he promised all those years ago.
Collapsing to the grass, Amy bowed her head, her arms wrapping tightly to her lengthy legs pressed to her chest, the set of pant and tee-shirt polka dot jammies keeping her warm in the chilly spring evening.

I’ve seen it before. Very old, and very kind and the very, very last, sound a bit familiar?
