Paris: 13, February, 2020: The Mobile World Congress (MWC), the annual telecoms industry gathering that draws more than 100,000 visitors to Barcelona, was cancelled on Wednesday after a mass exodus by exhibitors due to fears over the coronavirus outbreak.
Bowing to the inevitable, the GSMA telecoms association that hosts the get-together said it had cancelled the Feb. 24-27 event despite assurances from local and national health officials that it would have been safe to hold it.
“The GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event,” John Hoffman, the CEO of organiser GSMA, said in a statement.
The announcement followed a crisis meeting of the GSMA board, after its hand was forced by the pullout of anchor European members including Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, BT and Nokia.
Spain’s Telefonica, one of the biggest telecom operators not to have announced it was pulling out, said on Wednesday evening it “understands the GSMA’s decision to cancel the Mobile World Congress 2020 due to the situation generated by coronavirus.”
It said it would always support Barcelona as host city of the Mobile World Congress.  Barcelona’s mayor, Ada Colau, said earlier she wanted to send a “message of calm,” insisting the city was ready to host the event, while Spanish health officials reiterated that there was no reason to call off MWC.
The World Health Organisation, a UN agency leading the coronavirus crisis response, had also called in vain for calm.
“There is no evidence at present to suggest that there is community spread outside China, so WHO is not currently requesting that large gatherings are cancelled,” WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told Reuters in Geneva.
That failed, however, to alleviate concerns among major exhibitors that the precautions would be insufficient to halt the virus, which has spread beyond China’s borders to two dozen countries.
“To bring people together and connect them: That is what Telekom stands for. This is also what the Mobile World Congress, the ‘class reunion’ of our industry, stands for,” Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Hoettges posted on LinkedIn.
But he said that large gatherings of people with many international guests posed a particular risk: “To take this risk would be irresponsible.”
The Chinese contingent at MWC has numbered 5,000-6,000 in recent years, making the event particularly vulnerable given the outbreak of the virus that has killed more than 1,100 people on the Chinese mainland.
The GSMA said the host cities and partners respected and understood its decision, adding that they would “continue to be working in unison” towards staging next year’s event.
Hoffman and Colau are to hold a joint press conference on Thursday.
Due to the sheer scale of MWC, with delegates packing out Barcelona’s hotels and restaurants and causing the city’s trade fair grounds to burst at the seams, postponement was never a realistic option, sources said. 002

NEW YORK: 11, FEBRUARY, 2020: Considering climate change and its worst impacts around the world, new plans are being made to prevent and adapt to them.
One of them is the 'floating city' which is soon to become a reality.
The UN itself has taken over the project and is likely to complete the project in the same decade.
After that, floating cities will become a reality.
The construction of this city is taking place in view of rising sea levels, 90% of the world's cities are threatened by glaciers melting and sea level rise.
According to the preliminary sketch of the project, thousands of people will have houses to live in, while town squares and markets will also be built here.
A meeting at the United Nations headquarters gives a 10-year deadline for the completion of the project.
The question that arises here is will these cities be able to survive the tsunami and other dangerous hurricanes? In this regard, the project team is also working with Ocean Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and will be trying to make this city such that it can survive even in level 5 storms.
Another concern is also being shown that the project will be specific to the richest people only and the poorer people will be left to endure the severe effects of climate change on the earth. (04)

New York: 09, February, 2020: The United States and the European Union could team up to counter the dominance of China’s Huawei Technologies in the next-generation 5G telecoms technology, but not if Washington continues to threaten tariffs against Brussels, a senior German conservative lawmaker said late on Friday.
Norbert Roettgen, a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, said he told US officials during a visit to Washington that he saw opportunities for greater transatlantic cooperation on 5G that would benefit both sides.
“But … it must be clear that cannot happen if there is simultaneously the threat of trade war on the table,” said Roettgen, who heads the foreign affairs committee of Germany’s lower house of parliament, speaking after meetings with State Department and White House officials.
After reaching a Phase 1 trade deal with China, and securing the passage of a new North American trade pact in Congress, US President Donald Trump has set his sights on Europe and what he views as its unfair barriers for US companies.
Trump has threatened to slap 25% tariffs on European car imports, a move Brussels says it would counter with tariffs of its own.
The two blocs are also at odds over digital services taxes, aircraft subsidies, and Huawei.
The United States says gear provided by Huawei, the leading telecoms equipment vendor with a global market share of 28%, contains “back doors” that would enable China to spy on other countries, a claim Huawei vigorously denies.
Roettgen told reporters he did not expect Trump to follow through on the car tariff threat until after the November presidential election, but said the situation was unpredictable.
He said Trump’s rhetoric had become increasingly polarizing, but the historic allies shared security concerns about China and could work together to expand Europe’s alternatives to Huawei’s dominance of the 5G market.
US Attorney General William Barr on Thursday suggested the United States consider taking a “controlling stake” in two major foreign rivals of Huawei, Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson, but the White House dismissed that proposal on Friday.
The EU last week said members should decide for themselves what part Huawei can play in their 5G networks, resisting pressure from Washington for an outright ban.
Merkel favours strict security requirements for Germany’s 5G network, but opposes excluding individual companies.
Roettgen sees growing support for taking a tougher line by requiring firms that roll out a 5G network to be free of political influence in their home country, a move clearly aimed at Huawei. 002

NEW YORK, 01, FEBRUARY, 2020: Millions of old iPhones and Android devices set to lose access to Whatsapp from today (February 1, 2020) to ensure the security of its 1.5 billion users.
Any mobile devices running IOS 7 or older and Android version 2, 3, 7 or older will not supported by the tech-giant’s new update.
The Facebook-owned app stopped supporting a number of devices on December 31.
And on February 1, it will render lots more handsets out of date.
The company made the move to ensure the security of its users.
Today, February 01, any iPhone running software older than iOS 7 will no longer be supported and neither will any Android device with version 2, 3, 7 installed.
Similarly, Android 2 3 7 was known as Gingerbread and was launched way back in 2010.
By February of 2011 it had been supplanted by Android 3.0, also known as Honeycomb.
Chances are, unless you’re still rocking a Google Nexus S or a Samsung Galaxy S, you’ll probably be fine.
Windows Mobile is even older, it was originally rolled out in 2003 and ran until 2010 on devices.
When it became clear that iOS and Android were more superior, Microsoft re-engineered its mobile operating system into the tile-based Windows Phone OS, which didn’t fare much better.
Earlier, it withdrew support for Windows Phones in December of 2019, just when Microsoft backed up from support of Windows 10 and lower mobile operating systems.
Withdrawal came after the company’s official website issued a formal statement.
“Because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time," it said.
The company also informed of the existing users of old phones to export and archive data and move chat history to other devices with latest operating systems.
Over the past few years, Whatsapp has become one of the most popular messaging apps with over one billion users across the globe.
The application goes through constant changes and updates are now common.
However, fears of the application being a platform for fake news has led to governmental concerns.
Remeber that, last year, the Information Technology board had recommended that the government ban social networking websites such as Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube in government offices. (04)

New York: 29, January, 2020:  Facebook Inc recommended rules for how its independent oversight board will work and said a former human rights group director will lead the board’s administrative staff.
The content appeals board, which will grow to about 40 members and will be able to overrule Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the company’s high-profile responses to criticism over how it handles problematic content on Facebook and Instagram.
Facebook will name board members later in 2020, but it announced that Thomas Hughes, former executive director for freedom of expression rights group Article 19, will oversee the board’s administrative staff, whose first offices will be in the United States and United Kingdom.
Brent Harris, Facebook’s head of governance and global affairs, said the company had narrowed choices for board members down to “a few dozen people” but no formal offers had been made.
He said Facebook hoped the board, which will also be able to recommend policy changes, will start hearing cases this summer.  Facebook is under scrutiny ahead of the U.S. presidential elections in November, after U.S. intelligence agencies said that social media platforms were used in a Russian cyber-influence campaign aimed at interfering in the 2016 U.S. election – a claim Moscow has denied.
In December, Facebook pledged $130 million to fund the board for about six years.
The board’s cases can be referred either by Facebook or by a user who has exhausted the appeals process.
The proposed bylaws give a 90-day period for the board to make a decision and Facebook to act on it. For cases with “urgent real-world consequences,” there will a 30-day expedited review.
Initially, Facebook said users will only be able to appeal to the board when their content has been removed, though in future it wants the board to also handle cases where content was left up.
Evelyn Douek, a doctoral student at Harvard Law School who studies online speech legislation, told Reuters she was disappointed with this limitation.
“A lot of the really controversial cases in the past few years have been not take-downs but leave-up decisions, things like the Nancy Pelosi video, hate speech in Myanmar,” said Douek.
“And at the moment those aren’t in scope for the board to review them unless Facebook itself refers them to the board.”
Facebook, which has recently come under fire over its decision not to fact-check politicians’ ads, also said that the types of content that the board can review will later increase to include ads, Groups and Pages. 002

Beinjing: 28, January, 2020: Britain faces a crucial choice on Tuesday over whether to allow China’s Huawei Technologies to build its next-generation wireless networks.
The decision has implications for the country’s diplomatic relations with the United States, which is pushing allies to shun the Chinese company over cybersecurity concerns.
And Britain’s choice will feed into a wider battle between the U.S. and China over technological supremacy that has seen the world’s two biggest economies engage in a damaging trade war.
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Britain’s National Security Council is poised to decide whether to allow Huawei to build parts of its new high speed cellular network known as 5G, an infrastructure program the country sees as critical to its economic future.
But Huawei has come under scrutiny because of worries that communist leaders in Beijing could, under China’s 2017 national intelligence law, compel the company to carry out cyberespionage.
The United States has been pressing allies to shun Huawei and has threatened to cut off intelligence cooperation with Britain if it gives Huawei access.
Supporters say Britain needs Huawei’s expertise and that security issues can be managed.
The company denies it would give data access to the Chinese government.
WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT
Days away from leaving the European Union and desperately needing to secure its future outside of the trading bloc, Britain is now caught in the middle of a geopolitical battle between the U.S. and China - both important trading partners.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government finds itself in the awkward position of risking the fury of its closest ally at just the moment it really needs President Donald Trump’s administration to quickly strike a trade deal.
Britain is also loathe to insult Beijing.
The U.K. made a point of courting Chinese investment with the State Visit of Xi Jinping in 2015, a gilded affair meant to underline the dawn of a new era.
Johnson hinted Monday that he wants to thread a middle route.
“The way forward for us clearly is to have a system that delivers for people in this country the kind of consumer benefits that they want through 5G technology or whatever, but does not in any way compromise our critical national infrastructure, our security or jeopardize our ability to work together with other intelligence powers around the world,” he said.
“We are going to come up with a solution that enables us to achieve both those objectives and that’s the way forward.” 002
