Designing the system that you need:
1. Plan for your energy needs:
You need to decide on the power you will need from your Solar plant considering the appliances and equipment that you want to use. Also you will need to calculate the daily energy consumption of these appliances and equipment based on your usage pattern
2. Determining the energy consumption:
Figure out the wattage or current consumption of each appliance (usually listed on the device or in the manual)
Multiply the wattage by the number of hours you use the appliance each day. This gives you watt-hours.
If you only have the current consumption, then multiply that with the AC voltage of the unit which is normally 230
Add up the watt-hours for all devices to get your total daily consumption
Attention! you will need to consider the peak wattage to size the inverter capacity
Summing this up gives you the total energy consumption for your home, with which you can decide the Inverter capacity, size of the solar panels and battery capacity.
3. Check the Solar Potential in your area:
Availability of sunlight and the nature/type of your roof construction determines the solar potential. As a thumb rule, you can install about 1kW of solar panels in 100sq ft area. Also the best position of panel mounting is in an angle between 10-15 degrees based on the latitude of the place and facing south, considering the trajectory of sun from east to west and also the biannual shift between northern and southern hemispheres. Also, you need to ensure that shades of trees or nearby buildings do not fall on the panels
In sunny regions, you may only need a few solar panels to meet your needs, but in cloudy areas, you might need more panels or/and additional battery storage to ensure a steady energy supply.
4. Selection of proper equipment
Solar panels: There are different types of Photovoltaic panels - monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. Monocrystalline panels are more efficient but more expensive, while polycrystalline and thin-film panels are less costly but slightly less efficient. They are available in different wattages. You need to decide the array of panels and the number of strings and rows based both on the total wattage required and also the Vmp allowed by the inverter.
These days, Bifacial and TopCon panels are also available which are highly efficient and are available in higher wattages per panel
Batteries: The most common types of batteries for off-grid solar are Tubular lead-acid and Lithium-ion. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper but have a shorter lifespan, while lithium-ion batteries are more efficient, have a longer lifespan, and require less maintenance
Inverters with built in charge controllers:
- As discussed earlier in this article, Inverters convert the DC power produced by the panels into usable AC power. Look for high-quality, efficient inverters that can handle the load of all your appliances.
- The inverter with built in charge controllers will be able to better control and navigate the power from from panles to batteries, batteries to inverter and the load etc. This charge controller protect the batteries by regulating the voltage and controlling the current from panels. It prevents the batteries from overcharging and also over discharging
5. Installation:
While it’s possible to install your off-grid solar system yourself, it’s best to hire professionals to ensure everything is set up correctly and safely. To install the system properly, you will need to
Mount the solar panels on the roof
Wire the panels to the charge controller, batteries, and inverter. Install the AC/DC distribution panels
Ensure everything is properly grounded and protected.
Installation of lightning arrester and also the SPD (Surge protection Device)
While installing, be sure to follow all safety guidelines and local regulations. An improperly installed system could be dangerous and less efficient.
6. Maintenance:
Regular maintenance is required to maintain the solar power plant to ensure optimal performance. Regular maintenance includes:
Cleaning Solar panels: Dust, dirt, and debris can reduce the efficiency of your solar panels. Clean them regularly to ensure they capture as much sunlight as possible. The panels can be cleaned by splashing water and wiping them
Checking and maintaining batteries: Ensure your batteries are in good condition and functioning properly. If they are lead acid, they will need periodical topping up with distilled water. Contacts and terminals of all batteries must be proper. You may apply white petroleum jelly for proper connection and smooth current flow. Being DC devices, if they are not maintained well, the efficiency of the full system will suffer. Over time, they may lose capacity and need to be replaced.
Monitoring system performance: Keep an eye on the inverter and charge controller to ensure they are working efficiently.
7. Energy-Efficient Practices
