Izuku is sitting on the dorm's couch, dozing off when Kacchan flops next to him. He jumps in surprise before giving his friend a smile. They are still battered and carrying several bandages from the fight, but they're alive and here.

They won, and they did it together.

"Hey," he mumbles, happy to see him.

"Tch, you're such a nerd, you know?" Kacchan says, rolling his eyes.

"You keep telling me," Izuku rests his head on the back of the couch, studying his profile. "Is there a particular reason right now?"

"I talked to Round Face," he says, crossing his arms and avoiding his gaze.

Izuku frowns; he hasn't had much time to talk to anyone, and the last time he saw Uraraka it was while they were getting medical attention.

"Okay?" He says. "Did she tell you I was a nerd then?" Izuku teases him, and Katsuki snorts.

"She might as well have," he replies, and finally turns to look at Izuku. "Crepes and hand holding, really?"

Izuku feels his face heat up. He hadn't had the chance to think about his answer to Toga's question.

"What?! It's not like I have a lot of experience!" He defends himself, and Kacchan starts laughing. "It's a perfectly acceptable answer under the circumstances!" In a fit of bravery, Izuku shoves his shoulder. "What would you have said, huh? Fighting?"

Surprisingly, his friend answers.

"I like hiking," Kacchan says, voice calm, even if his expression is a little nervous.

"I would like that," Izuku grins before Kacchan's blush clues him on what he just said. "I wasn't- I didn't mean it like- Kacc-" A hand covering his mouth stops the rambling.

"I don't like sweet shit," Kacchan blurts out and Izuku understands.

He doesn't need Kacchan to shout what he means, he can read him just fine. They might have struggled in the past, but they're getting better at understanding the other.

His heart is hammering inside his chest and he feels like he's floating, which is concerning, because he can actually float, but he still brings his hand up, removing the palm covering his mouth and interlocking their fingers.

Kacchan watches their joined hands, eyes wide, but he holds onto him.

"Savory crepes," Izuku says and Kacchan glances at him.

"Hah?"

"The crepes don't have to be sweet," Izuku mutters, playing with his fingers. "If you're interested, of course."

Kacchan smiles, pleased and so unlike his victory smirk, that Izuku crosses the small distance between them and rests his forehead on his shoulder, shying away from the sight before he does something stupid, like kiss him.

"You might not be such a shitty nerd after all, Deku."

"Is that so?"

"Well, you can't be, since you just got yourself a date."

Kacchan squeezes his hand and he beams. Yeah, Izuku knows a thing or two about romance.

The “ima made gomen” (sorry for everything i’ve done) moment is something that can only be fully understood in the manga because we can see it’s encased in quotation marks on paper. i always found the translations a bit lacking to focus on kacchan saying it in the now without the extra nuance that he is really saying “these are the words” he just mentioned about, the ones he had long been mulling over and wanting to tell to izuku, at least from the time he saw him about to perish to shigaraki. 

he isn’t just saying “i’m sorry for everything i’ve done” he’s saying: there are words i felt i HAD to say to you ever since i got stabbed, even though it might not change anything, and they are “ima made gomen.“ it’s a detail that helps paint the picture of kacchan being a person who gets trapped inside his anxieties and struggles with them. rather than put aside his worries, instead, carries them with him always. just like the time he anguished about being the end of all might, [the words] he knew he most wanted to say weighed on his mind for weeks and he was unable to let go of his memories of what he did to izuku. it was only at izuku’s most dire did he realise the weight of everything he did to him. how it’s been impacting izuku every time he tries to prove himself again and again, even at the cost to his own well-being.

it’s why he was so desperately trying to get to izuku again, at the hospital, solo deku arc… so he could finally say these words because life is too fragile, too precious… he realised this that day when he saw his important person about to disappear from the world. it was in this moment, he could no longer deny that izuku was important to him.

a whirlpool of emotions and their memories flashed in his mind

i was such an asshole to deku and always told him he couldn’t do it all i’ve ever done is hurt him yet he was there for me when i needed him and what have i done for him? i’m sorry i can’t let him go at it alone he needs me he would do the same for me ”I felt like your eyes were pleading to be saved!” it is what he did for me!

filled with admiration, guilt, need to repair things between them and the honest fear of losing izuku forever, kacchan’s heart gained the missing piece he’s always known to be inside izuku and he became a true hero. ever since then, nothing else has been on his mind but the desire to heal izuku of the trauma he caused, to be his companion and to save him from his cursed fate.
