Typography Lessons
I have been doing a Design fundamental course to understand design further.
This course is made from the same Designer as I referenced in my post Typography References, he is a designer, founder and executive creative director of Blind, Inc., a digital design studio with an emphasis on storytelling and image making.
The idea of the whole course is very practical, the structure is to let the student analyse the content and come up with their own.
“Repetition and Contrast” is usually the motto that the teacher says to symbolize the practice needed to understand the fundamentals of design.

Website Decision
Talk about the freelance manifesto
After reading about how to appear as a reliable artist in the book Freelance Manifesto I have decided to use a website as my platform to show my portfolio.
This will give me a chance to learn about the fundamentals/principles of Design which a long time goal that I had.
The reasoning behind putting the work in a website is because it would be appealing to understand how to make a good user experience through the UI (user interface) of a website.
The reliability factor is from the writing that will be in the about page and the goal is that whoever reads the bio would know the kind person I am so that they can picture what is it like to work with me.

Narrative and Subcontext
Has shown from the final render post my final decision of the narrative and subcontext is the same as the ones that I will do as Final Major Project.
So the narrative of this picture is the start of the protagonist when it needs to go through a new environment due to the harsh place that it’s been through.Â

Presentation
In the presentation, I will be introducing the narrative and then the subcontext.
Presenting the work and breakdown, then showing the mood board.Â
Finishing different mockups of the potential installation setups that I could do.

Jini’s Tutorial v3
In the tutorial that I had with Jini, we talked about how I am going to present and she asked me a series of questions to check if I thought about the presentation that I will do in the 21st Nov.
After I finished to show the work (Blocking) that I have done. I have also shown something that I did last minute in 3DS Max.
This is to show a snippet of the quality that I would like to achieve in terms of framing and technical capabilities. The image shown above is just a test to get familiar with the process of making I will be doing something different for the 21st Deadline.
The question that Jini asked about the presentation is how I am going to present and I responded that I will do a quick introduction about the concepts and dive deep in to piece of work and from there showing the process of making (breakdown) and finishing with the aims for the EPP.
When asked which artists I am drawing inspiration from I responded Maciej Kuciara after showing some of his work she asked me to look into female artists due to the different artistic eye that they might have. After researching into female artists she advised to make a mood board (as she usually does).
Finally, she mentioned Additi Dutt a formal student that did compositing and matte painting when she was a student. The suggestion given from Jini is to have the tools and technics at the service of the story. From there I told her the story that I wanted to portray and the subcontext with Lev Manovich.

Small project process
When I was doing the research for the theories to choose from there were two that stood out which I tried to visualise and I started to block the frame.

So, with this process of blocking, I could instantly tell if I could make a picture out of the concepts that I would read about. Which is also solidifies how much I understand the concepts described in the book.

Exploring Styles
Since I had the idea for this project I wanted to have concept art style the reason being is the nature of the format which focuses to the story in the creative side and framing, lighting and just giving a really good idea of the space.
There is an artist in particular that I drawn inspiration from called Maciej Kuciara and I like the spatially shown in his work, which is what I am looking to achieve into my work.

I will look into more artists and styles but this is a good start/reference to focus the research on looking for more artists.
As mentioned from Jini I have looked into Lev Manovich's work.
Now I understand what Jini wanted me to see when implementing Lev Manovich’s into a piece of work. However, I wanted the theories to be a subcontext of the work so this approach is not very relevant. Interesting nonetheless.Â

21st Deadline (Prototype Concept)
After seeing the criteria for the 21st deadline I wanted to have a prototype project that will help to test the creative and technical aspects of the project that I want to do in FMP.
My only goal, for now, is to look for a “throw away theory” for the prototype due to the fact that I don’t want the theories to repeat in the FMP.
This can change at any time if I think that would be better to have teaser which it might be a better option. I have yet to evaluate.
My overall focus is to use the right medium (digital picture) and to be creative within the medium.

Serial Digital Images (Narrative Challenge)
The narrative challenge that I am experiencing is that due to the symbolism of the concept that I am trying to achieve.
My approach is to have the environment and the visual look of the character to represent the state of mind of character but also the subtext that I want to distil from each frame.
This is why a careful study of framing will be necessary, due to the fact that I need to guide the viewer’s attention and therefore controlling the amount of information given within the framing. Â
Also, to help me guide the way information gets assimilated I will use lines into frames and general shapes that can focus on one or two points in the frame.
Blocking and also working with bright and dark parts of the frame will help me to guide the viewer's attention.

With those rules in place, I can then decide how to frame the next picture in the series.

Serial Digital Images (Concept)
The concept behind of the series of images is to have a narrative which is the platform for the subtext of the theories explained from Lev Manovich.
The story that I want to represent is the of an artist in which s/he is going to a process where s/he is discovering the craft and all the difficulties that come from mastering the craft.
The representation will be very symbolic so that a wide range of artists can look at the piece and relate to their own issues from mastering their craft.

Jini’s Tutorial v2
In this tutorial, I had a chance to expose my idea to Jini and it has been received well and all the concerns about collaboration and creativity were gone.
The idea that I had pitched to Jini was to make a narrative throughout the series of pictures that I would make to represent various theories of Lev Manovich from picture to picture.
The idea is to also have an actual story within the pictures as well.
On top of that, I will have a chance to experiment with composition and colour.
Lastly, we spoke about me showing a practical piece or something for the next week as the main topic that we discussed was to start making.

Peter’s Tutorial v1
Pre-tutorial Thoughts:
I have arranged a tutorial with Peter due to fact that last year for the work experience module, Peter has been to most useful tutor in terms to naming alumni in VFX. Therefore the thought process that I had was that maybe Peter has been tutoring the VFX artists just like Jini and Jane do experimental film/film.
Tutorial:
My initial thoughts were wrong and Peter knows VFX alumni just because he has been course leader for so many years and tracking alumni.
I have explained to Peter why there seems to be resistance to the fact that I am working alone and many tutors are concerned about the collaboration aspect.
Peter raised a more important issue about my approach to the module by pointing out the fact I am not paying attention to the creative aspect of the Final Major Project and EPP which is 25% of the module that I am ignoring.
With the being said Peter suggested that I look into Lev Manovich’s book Software takes command to get inspiration form the theories that he talks about.
From there I could look into doing an installation to represent the 3D camera of a 3D software into a real place. The idea could be that 3D cameras tend to have a perfect look until you put unperfections into the 3D objects. On top of that different 3D cameras have a different softness that can be tweaked and the cinematic look can vary to what we used to form films.
I am not fond of this idea it’s a bit too abstract and on top of that, I am not able to challenge myself into the areas that I am interested in.
The idea that I had from Peter’s suggestion to look into Lev Manovich was about doing a series of pictures which every picture is going to symbolise a theory of Lev Manovich.
I really like this idea because I get to experiment a lot within a format that I never used.

Jini Tutorial v1
This first tutorial with Jini there was a lot of brainstorming about what could be done.
The main concern seems the collaboration aspect which my project fundamentally lacks.
We talked about breaking down the work so that there is a process to be seen. This is to let someone that doesn’t know much about VFX to understand the amount of work and also the conceptual thought process behind the work.
The web design for the website has been mentioned briefly and just re-stating the format that I want to use.
Lastly, Jini advised me to look into other projects due to collaboration issue.
Thoughts:Â
The tutorial overall went well, I am concerned about the collaboration side and I would need to have more clarification to understand why Jini and others tutors want me to work in a group so much.
