James dipped his headlights as he rounded a corner, another car heading towards them, then flicked them back on once they had passed. It was a new moon, and the rural lanes with no street lighting and trees towering either side of the road required full beams to see the twists and turns ahead.

The drive was a regular one, taking them to their weekly visits to Potter Manor, tucked away far from the bustle of London where they lived together.

The first time they had made the drive in the dark, Regulus spent the whole time gripping white-knuckled at the hand-hold above his head, terrified of crashing, and insisting on James driving carefully please, refusing to take his focus off the road for even a second.

But they had made this drive through the woods hundreds of times now, and Regulus had lost this fear over the years.

As usual, Regulus had insisted on his own playlist for the drive and as usual he was asleep, head resting gently against the passenger window. James peeked across at his sleeping boyfriend whenever he safely could, the image of dark tousled curls, porcelain skin smoothed from worry in sleep, drool collecting at the corner of his mouth filling him with love.

He touched his hand to his pocket, feeling for the small box hidden there, and smiled to himself.

Hopefully, this time tomorrow when making the drive home through the familiar woods, it would be his sleeping fiance that he would be sneaking glances at.

The boy had trading cards, James’ broom, a fully autographed snitch. He had a giant poster of James in his room and Lucius hated it so much. One time, he saw Draco ordering a James Potter body pillow (Mr Potter agreed to that piece of merchandise for a “save the house elf” charity match) and he stomped into his and Narcissa’s room. “I don’t mind my boy being a queer but for the love of the dark lord, his taste in men is abysmal! Could he not have chosen a Black or a Goyle- At this point, I would take a Zabini over that mudblood sympathiser POTTER!”
