The Marriage of the Bride to The Art
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An contemporary interpretation of Jill Orr’s artwork of the same name. Me in a white dress, out the front of the Gallery of Modern Art, with James Turell’s light installation Night Life. Though exploring the same concepts, these two works have a totally different tone, through the bright colours and the dramatic poses with the big smiles.
It’s a little comedic to me. The emotions a trophy wife would be having on the day of her wedding, but externalised rather than internalised.

Girls Don’t Poop
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This artwork was born out of the frustration of being told (by a male) that using the word piss was unladylike. This is a nice instruction manual for any man who ever says that to me again. If a man can take a piss, I can too, that’s feminism for you buddy!

This artwork stemmed from when I realised that the richest artists in the world were all men. I was reading a very poorly written article, or list of sorts, that almost appeared to have been translated from another language, and to be honst I got very offended. I copied it all across, replaced the hims with hers, hes with shes, and thought of female alter egos for each of the artists.

These are like personalised autographed pictures that celebrities sometimes give out. they’re a little critical of the ideas ‘persona’ especially in contemporary times. I might fiddle with the idea of printing and distributing them.

I scanned these images of my body and want to use them as a handout of sorts, maybe incoroporating a little critique of the idea of a ‘brand’.

these are my hands and you know what i love them EQUALLY even though the right one can do way more thigns than the left one why didn't god create all hands EQUAL!

A semi-recreation of Peter Campus’ seminal work Three Transitions.
A conscious choice to not use the green screen effect and the famous ‘reveal of self’ was made.

A Tally Of... (02/09-25/09)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This work was really fun, and quite similar to my developmental works fomr last semester. I like that it evolves over time, and revel in the process of slowly adding to it, in a somewhat performative way. That performance art is not about standing up, live in front of an audience, but that a work can have performative aspects to it.

The same questions on womanhood, but with my current answers.
This was really difficult actually. Saying these things is a lot harder than writing them thats for sure.
Especially on topics around sex and sexuality.
This was a big push for me, and i think the result is really honest and quite baring.

This is a 10 minute audio recording where I interview myself.
It was recorded this year, but the answer were originally written in late 2016.
This was a very odd exercise as my answers in some places remained the same, but in other places were starkly different. Things are very different circumstantially for me now though, so that it understandable. A lot happens in two years!
It was odd though, it was almost like I was reading a script for a part. Acting. Pretending to be someone else.
I certainly waffled on a lot more back then than I do now.

I chose to recreate this work frame for frame (or as close to as possible), even matching Landers word for word. I was struck by how similarly he felt about his art to how I felt about mine and I found that massively reassuring.
I thought it was odd that he had made an artwork about it, and especially odd that that artwork seemed to be one of the pieces that launched his career.
I had been trying to figure out how to make a work about the same topic and it seemed that recreating this piece would allow me to express myself exactly, but also to add an extra layer to the concept.
I do not think this artwork would be so well received if it had been made by a female. I really do not.

INSTALLATION VIEW OF ‘MIND YOUR MANNERS’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had the opportunity to install this work as multi-channel during the gallery task, and despite limited resources, it worked out brilliantly. It was a real lesson in patience and how to untangle cords. It looks neat from the front but behind the screens it is very shotty. It would be interesting to see this projected.
The gallery task was a great exercise in the sense that we were also able to learn how to mediate conflicting views, and a conflicting works within a space, which is especially important in any aural works, of which there were a few. It was difficult for me to have this up on for everyone to see and hear, but a lot of great conversation ensured, a lot of people sharing their experiences of feminine passivity.

Third iteration.
It occurred to me that pisstake might be a play on words for mistake!
I think it really means piss take in the sense of the word. Making a mockery of... taking the piss.
I can hear very clearly my brother incredulously asking “are you taking the piss?” thats the kind of feel i associate this with.

Piss take.
The sound of urination played backwards.
I like the way this turned out. Its recognisable, but less abject than the unedited recording.
I might experiment with a few more audio recordings.

Examining feminine passivity.
The disconnect between the audio and the video operates well to create a sense of discord.
Pleasantries become quite egocentric when inverted.
Contradicts conventions of politeness, contradicts feminine tropes of doormatishness.
The notion that pleasantries might often be a muted form of subservience, or a disguise for archaic sexist ideas such as ‘ladies first’. While manners are important, and you should mind your manners, it is also important to be mindful of them.
It’ll be exciting to see this installed in the gallery space, on two screens.

Collaborative sound work with Madison Agnew.
Made in the sound lab class with Daniel using audio recorded in the local grocery store using Zoom recorders hired from the ELC.
Already quite familiar with using Audition but was nice to formally learn how to utilise the program’s features, especially the effects.
I like the effect of the ‘heartbeat’ but would like to learn how to improve upon the sounds quality, and perhaps remove the white noise in the background.
