JOURNAL ENTRIES OF LIEUTENANT BROOKS (digitized - original in police custody)
FEB 22, 2021
What am I supposed to do when such a high profile case is so unsolvable. I swear this shit seems like it really is supernatural, but I cant tell the town that. That fucking butler seems so off, I dont trust him, nor do I trust that grandfather. One day, someone will read this journal and you’ll think I’m crazy, so here, look at this piece of paper I found in the attic, and youll realize I am not.
MAY 3, 2021
Its been months and we havent even found a hint of where the kids bodies went. Every time we search the house the butler lurks around us like the grim reaper. The grandfather doesnt seem to give a shit. How the fuck these kids kept coming here year after year is beyond me. Even more beyond me is where the fuck they went. Why was the window open. Theres nowhere to fucking go from there. And now people are scared to open their windows. Especially after what happened to that reporter. Its crazy shit, being scared to open a window. Ive never seen anything like this. Nothing but burn and scratch marks. SIgns of struggle but no DNA evidence, no leftover clothes, nothing. The only reason I know the kids were there was cause the other rooms had suitcases and the butler said they were there. Man fuck that butler, I hope I can find a way to pin this on him. Ive never felt such hate for someone before. Its brought out a darkness in me I didnt know I had. A great christmas present would have been him kicking the bucket. Ive almost shot him a few times anyways. Theres been lots of windows of opportunity.

I could have been up for a promotion, running the entire department here. This stupid case has cost me that. The chief wont retire now. The people are starting to turn on me. Everybody used to be so nice, now its like everyone has been replaced by their evil twin. Ms McDaniels used to be so nice to me and now she just frowns at me when I walk by..
MAY 7, 2021
I don’t know how much longer I can take this town. I think i neëd to move and get the fuck out of this place. Chief isnt the same as he was before. Part of me thinks he thinks Im to blame for this all going to shit.
MAY 29, 2021
Im leaving this fuckhole. Im done with this stupid fucking window casë. Officer Barnes has been with me for much of the case, and itll bë his responsibility now. Im handing in my resignation tomorrow.

THE MYSTERY OF MURTAGH MANSION by Paige Bueckers (transcript version)
THE MYSTERY OF MURTAGH MANSION
Written by Paige Bueckers
It’s not everyday you hear stories of the supernatural, but during the holiday season, such stories often begin to pop up. Tales of Christmas miracles and holiday magic. But what is the opposite of a miracle? Whatever happened a few weeks ago in the long-time family home of the Murtaghs.
On Thanksgiving a few weeks ago, authorities were called to the rural property after there were sightings of strange happenings. Multiple witnesses reported multiple seemingly impossible things. One woman, who requested not to be named, claimed she saw a black mist descending over the acres of farmland as she drove by the mansion in an attempt to bypass traffic. A drone enthusiast claims his drone caught footage of strange black creatures roaming the fields where he often flew, before those same creatures crashed his drone. Jeff Padinsky, a jogger in the area, claims he heard screaming and ethereal sounds coming from inside, and that he set a record time running home that day. I must say I am skeptical of these claims of the supernatural. What truly happened does not seem to be clear, and authorities have been unable to say much at this time.
Lieutenant Brooks of the local police department did however offer a report that the mansion’s attic door had appeared to be forced open and seemed to be the site the commotion originated. The attic was covered in scratches that were as large as a bear’s would be, and some areas had a blackened char to them. The attic window also appeared to be forced open, though it seems unlikely anyone escaped through there as the drop was 4 stories tall. The butler of the estate claimed he did not see anything, as he was working in the basement preparing some of the Christmas gifts his boss had just purchased for his grandchildren, who were staying at the mansion at the time of the “happening” as the town is calling it. Those grandchildren have disappeared, adding further confusion to whatever happened. The police are offering a $500 reward to anyone who can provide useful information to help locate the missing persons.
In a season that is supposed to have holiday cheer, there seems to be a black cloud lurking over the town. People are uneasy, and are remaining at home with closed windows more than usual. Yet, I encourage you all, open a window, there’s nothing to fear and its a warm winter this year. The Murtagh mansion is far from most of you, the darkness won’t get in your homes. Nobody has seen this black mist other than the few people mentioned earlier. So don’t be afraid to open your windows

Diary entry retrieved from one of the missing grandchildren
this entry is believed to be by Anthony Murtagh, who was reportedly a detail-oriented aspiring writer. The original digital copy remains in police custody.
I had spent countless holiday seasons at my grandfather’s large rural mansion. It had been in the family for generations, and was home to many warm memories of Christmases past. Every Christmas Eve we gathered around the warmth of the gigantic fireplace, the flames raising fears within my younger self that the mansion would burn down, but it never did. As we all sat there, everyone would open one of their gifts, the youngest children often choosing the biggest package they could find their name on. We would then sing Christmas carols and some years we would even roast marshmallows in the fire. It was a beautiful time.
This Thanksgiving my cousins and I decided to arrive early and spend the full month of December (and of course early November) at the mansion. My grandfather was away on a business trip when we arrived, but his butler, a tall and pale man, greeted us and showed us to the rooms we had stayed in yearly since we were kids. To be honest, the butler, whose name I always forgot, had always given me the creeps. It felt like he was always lurking just around the corner, ready to startle me with his pasty appearance. I ignored him as much as I could the first night, managing to make it to bedtime without seeing him again. The closest-aged cousin to me and I shared a room, and began to talk when neither of us could fall asleep.
“You know the attic that grandpop always said was off limits?” my cousin started, “all of us are planning to check it out tomorrow.”
I nodded in the dark, I had always been curious about that room. There was a window at the top of the mansion that I never had found the room connecting to it, and I had tried hard to do so as a child. The window was always dark, even in the brightest of winter days, it looked as though it was the pitch black of a cold winter’s night inside. It had always made me curious, I had always wanted to open that window, and to try to let the darkness out. The mansion had always looked so strange when I arrived on  a bright day and everything else seemed so cheery. Grandfather always said not to worry about it, and that always made me worry about it more- at his old age he must have forgotten how intriguing those words are to a kid.
That night I drifted off to sleep thinking about the attic, the one room of the massive mansion I had never been in. It must be the way to that window, the window that I need to open. I dreamt of what I would find when I opened it, how all the darkness would spill out and the window would finally be light again…
