At first, when I heard about c!Wilbur's letters to c!Phil, I was a little confused and could almost tell that something was a little off, although I didn't think too much about it. Phil mentioned that Wilbur was writing about "how much fun he was having with his friends" and how happy he was in L'manberg. But, we, as the audience know that Wilbur definitely wasn't having fun in L'manberg, particularly during his presidency, when his paranoia spiral was already beginning and he was having regular breakdowns due to stress and his underlying "some form of crippling depression," as Ghostbur put it. Heck, Ghostbur confirmed that, even when Wilbur won the revolution, he still seemed sad.
But now, it completely makes sense. Of course c!Wilbur was lying in the letters. It's c!Wilbur, the same guy who would much rather put a brave face on and pretend to be happy and strong for the sake of his friends and nation, even when his stress was literally killing him and his depression was worsening. The same guy who would put on the facade of a charismatic leader when giving his speeches, and then would turn around and cry and scream into his pillow when he was alone, never telling anybody that he would do this until after he died. The same guy who lied about his suicidal intentions and said that he didn't plan on dying when he pressed the button, even though he had placed TNT throughout the button room and only acknowledged later that he knew he was going to die when he pressed it, and even wanted to die. When has c!Wilbur ever reached out for help regarding his mental state, told anybody what he was going through, or willingly let that "professional, strong-willed, leader" facade slip to reveal what he was truly scared, sad, or insecure about, apart from when he was literally breaking down in front of somebody?
Of course he'd rather write about how much fun he was having with his friends rather than how the stress of running a country was eating up him inside. Of course he'd rather lie and say he won the election and decided to willingly start a new nation, rather than open up to somebody about how he fears he had failed as a leader, he was undergoing a traumatic event, and was slowly becoming more depressed and suicidal? Be honest, if you had the same coping mechanisms as c!Wilbur and you were faced with the same horribly traumatic incident he was faced with that destroyed your mental health and made you see yourself as a failure, you probably wouldn't want to tell your parents either.
This is also the same Wilbur that said, word-for-word, "I wonder if Phil is proud of me." Wilbur strived for the approval of others, it's where he gets his self-worth from. Being a successful president, being an accomplished leader. He wanted so badly to be seen as successful and accomplished, as the person he wanted to be, and he especially wanted to be seen as successful and accomplished by his father. He wanted, desperately, for his father to be proud of him. Losing the election and getting exiled to Pogtopia was a shattering blow for Wilbur, and his entire worldview turned upside down. He started questioning if he was a good president, even talked about how he feared he wasn't the best ruler, and started seeing himself as more and more of a failure. Not only would Wilbur not want to open up about his steadily declining mental state to Phil, but he would also never in a million years want anybody else to know about his failures, because if he couldn't get that approval and pride, especially from his father, that he wanted so badly, who even was he? What is he if not the accomplished president, the charismatic, high-achieving leader, the successful son to be proud of, in the eyes of others? In the eyes of his father?

i appreciate the evolution of tommy’s stream titles from shit like “BIG MAN IS BACK” to “depressed” or “alone” and now straight up “Breaking into Prison to Kill Dream.” no more of that one word adjective shit, we got a location, an objective, and a green man to kill, buckle up motherfuckers.

“I guess everyone has their own personal limbo. Okay, Tommy I dont know if you remember me telling you this it was quite a few years ago for me know. My personal limbo is a train platform, Tommy.
It was a train platform, no matter where I looked, no matter where I went, just concrete walls all around and a tube and a track running straight along. It doesn’t matter what I did, Tommy. I could claw at the walls, I could bash on the doors, I could scream for help, I screamed until my lungs were sore, until my voice was hoarse and nothing ever changes, nothing ever comes, nothing ever helps you, Tommy.
And then you arrive, and it was great! And then you left, you got on a train and you left. And Tommy, the last thing I saw, was a train pulling in. There were two people on that train.
One man, a desaturated me. Came rolling into town, tolling into my limbo- he’s in my limbo! He came rolling in, he came steaming with tears- they looked like they were burning him? I don’t know-
But you know who else was on that train? Who was conducting the train, who let me out, Tommy?”
“Who?”
“It was Dream.”
c!Wilburs monologue on everything.
