Listen. This is just a dream. Very clever people can hear dreams, so please, just listen. I know you’re afraid, but being afraid is alright, because didn’t anyone ever tell you fear is a super power. Fear can make you faster, and cleverer and stronger and one day, you’re going to come back to this barn and on that day, you’re going to be very afraid indeed. But that’s OK, because if you’re very wise and very strong, fear doesn’t have to make you cruel or cowardly. Fear can make you kind.

The Egg - Andy Weir
I normally don't post things like this. However, I wrote an article about contemplating whether or not this kind of existence was possible. It can be nice to see someone with a similar idea, turn it into a relatable story. Well done.

Travelling Large
I don’t understand why people find it necessary to do “as much as they can, in as little time as possible” when they travel. Over and over, I see people taking time off to visit multiple places for short periods of time: London, Paris, Brussels, Rome… each stay 3 nights maximum before you move somewhere else. When people try to explain why to me, they tell me they want to see “as much as possible.” But what are they actually seeing?
I believe travel is best enjoyed in long intervals. After all, it is only when a person lives in a place for a significant amount of time, when the person can truly understand what it’s like to live in the culture. All the things you see during short-interval trips – all the shows, monuments, famous restaurants, etc. – most of these exists for tourists. No native New Yorker goes out of their way to visit Time Square on a regular basis, just as no native Parisian would want to climb the Eiffel Tower. These things exist for tourists, and don’t actually give much insight into the place’s native culture. Real, worthy travel looks past this: It allows you to live as you normally would, but in a different location.
I would like to travel all over the world, just like everyone else. I would like to see everything – from the large city of London, to small the towns of Bologna or Basel. However, I would gladly trade a week-long visit to seven different famous locations, for a month-long stay in somewhere unusual and small. It is only by staying in the place for a significant amount of time, after all, that I would really learn about the place... from a native’s perspective.
