Reading Record
In light of my knowledge, this text talks about the lessons that I have learned in subject EAPP or English for Academic and Professional Purpose. I am Jhon Lourence from ABM 1, and this is my Reading Record.
In Lesson 1, I have learned about defining and identifying academic texts and non-academic texts, and the examples of this 2 types of text. Also, the structures of academic texts, which is Structures of Paragraphs that involves different types of sentences, and Structure of Three-Part Essay that composed of three basic parts which is Introduction, Body Paragraphs and Conclusion. Also, the three types of Academic text discipline that can help writers identify what type of discipline applied to that research and what academic discipline should we use to that particular topic. We have Business discipline (surplus and shortage) talks mostly about business and finance management that can help and influence people that are into business, we also have Humanities Discipline (theism and atheism) talks mostly about people's beliefs without God, Natural Applied Science discipline (logic and faith) talks mostly about Human's Health and the sustainability of the environment, and we have Social Science discipline (hope and despair) talks mostly about human society and social relationship. Lastly, I have also learned about how to contextualized or customized a word in Academic Texts. That's all of my reflection for lesson 1, now we have to move on lesson 2.
In Lesson 2, I have learned about Critical Reading and the three types of Critical reading. If you have to read a text critically, you have to be active reader that involves about analyzing, rereading and understanding the structural analysis of a particular text. And also the three types of critical reading which is Critical reading for analysis, Critical reading for interpretation, and Critical reading for interpretation. As you can see, I only have few knowledge on this lesson that goes inside my brain because it's complicated and challenging. That's all of my reflection for lesson 2, we have to move on lesson 3.
In Lesson 3, I have learned about Outlining and constructing a thesis statement in academic text. Outlining is not easy at all it requires mastery of analyzing and finding the important or essential information and organized it, and, ensuring the paragraphs are fully developed. The purpose of a thesis statement is to take place the main point of the text and also, thesis statement answers a questions, shows the stand on an issue, it makes claim that can be disputed, and etc. I have also learned about the steps on writing a strong thesis statement that requires the things that we have to avoid and the things that we have to do in order to construct a strong thesis statement. That's all of my reflection for lesson 3, we have to move on lesson 4.
In Lesson 4, I have learned about defining citations, identifying the types of citations, and the purpose of citations. Also, Evaluating sources. Based on my knowledge, Citation is all about giving credits to all the authors that made all of the sources you've used in the text. Of course, if you will do citation you have to know the different types of citations that you can use in constructing a citations. First, in-text citation, this type of citation include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses, example {Santos (09)} and also it usually can be found as a first word in the sentence. Second, parenthetical citation, this type of citation is enclosed in the parentheses and embedded in text, example {(Santos, 09)} and usually can be found in the last part of a sentence. Lastly, reference citation, this type of citation give authoritative sources for your statement and helps audience gain access to those sources, example {Santos (09), the world of business: the right direction to successful life}. That's all of my reflection for lesson 4, now we have to move on in the last lesson.
In Lesson 5, the last lesson I have learned for the first semester is Paraphrasing and Summarizing. In this lesson I learned how to summarize a text by distilling the essential context in a text and expressing concepts with precise and specific language. As far as i remember, previewing, scanning and skimming are the steps to summarize a text. Based on my knowledge, the purpose of summarizing is to reproduce the point of a text, and making text less in words but the same idea. Same words in paraphrasing. Paraphrasing, works by restating a particular text in other form but the same meaning. I also remember the characteristics of a good paraphrase, Paraphrase should relay the information from the source text in your own words, and Paraphrase should lead the readers to the source of the information. I also learned about when we use paraphrase like when you want to minimize direct quotation. I have also learned about the different ways or kinds of paraphrase, the first way is change in part of speech, change of structure, clause reduction, and synonym replacement. I also how to apply this four kinds of paraphrase.
