How would you feel if someone praised your writing, but in the process they talked shit about someone else's in comparison?

Personally, I'd be a bit sad about it. Not only is it easy to imagine ourselves on the other end of that exchange, being the one that's put down, but it's possible that we're acquainted with the writer being put down. In fandom or in, like, professional writing. It doesn't feel great to be insulted, and I'm a pretty empathetic person I'd like to think so it's easy for me to feel insulted for that other writer.

Either way, I'm always super ecstatic when my writing moves someone, but I'd be disappointed to hear it tainted by the shit talk.

My response to stuff like this in the past has been to thank the person then to usually find a lighthearted way of saying that I try not to compare myself and that I like that everyone's out there sharing their feelings, thoughts, that sorta thing. Which is true.

I don't think I've had too many of these comments before, though.

I'll be upfront with my opinion, which mirrors my opinion in regards to my field: using AI will only hasten your own obsolescence. The point of fanfiction is not to crank out fics, but rather to enjoy the hobby and communities of writing and fandom.

Just make sure you're not doing that thing where you isolate yourself, and then convince yourself that you're so different from everyone else. Discomfort and fear can be a signal that you're on the right track.
