I love unreliable narrators who withhold information deliberately. Who know exactly what's going on and straight up lie about it. I love narrators who lie to the reader, to everyone around them and especially to themselves

ive been reading gsgw lately and its very funny to me that baek saheon thinks kim soleum is role playing being a normal person to everyone but him when its actually the other way around. (aka firing shots to keep the rent down = scaring baek saheon into compliance)

One of the great things about the ORV novel that the webtoon doesn't quite capture are the moments where Kim Dokja's apathetic and disconnected (as he perceives it; mr king of unreliable narrators is NOT apathetic at all) narration completely collapses. Webtoon Dokja is being viewed in third person, so you can SEE him and all the characters reacting, but in the novel you're IN Dokja's tunnel-visioned little brain. And so it's just !!! really interesting to see all his strategy, linear narrative thought, humorous speaking-to-the-audience style delivery crumble in the face of pure emotional response.

Meta has talked to death (respectfully) when this happens in the face of care/love/companionship. We all know Dokja cannot accept loving or being loved! But!!!!!!!

It isn't talked about nearly enough how much he truly CANNOT stand being angry. Not petty angry, not frustrated, not annoyed - I'm talking about when he's furious. The collapse of his narrative is FASCINATING in the context of the limited number of things that make Dokja that angry, because it means that he's SCARED of being that angry. That he's repressing it as deeply as he represses love.

On a reread, the way it frames his conversation with his mother has me gnawing at the bars of my cage I tell you.
