It’s normal to think about ways to enhance your appearance and impressions. However, negative self-worth and lack of self-esteem can be detrimental to your life as a whole.
While some aspects of your physical appearance may not be under your control, some factors are.
For instance, your smile. It determines how people see you, which, in turn, affects how they behave or interact with you.
How Can A Smile Affect Your Life?
According to a study by the American Psychology Association, your smile affects how people perceive you – especially in terms of attractiveness, health, friendliness, self-confidence, and trustworthiness.
So, a smile can affect your social interactions, make or break your first impression, and the way people remember you. Something with such a significant impact on your life shouldn’t go neglected now, should it?
Having an aesthetic and pleasing smile can boost your impression as well as your self-esteem. After all, your smile does affect your self-perception and personality.
The question is: what affects the aesthetics of your smile and overall face?
In terms of facial structure, two significant features affect the aesthetics of your smile and teeth: Lip Positioning and Gingival Display.
Let’s talk about how each of these plays a role in determining how aesthetic your smile is.
How Lip Positioning Affects Your Aesthetics
Lip position is the shape of your mouth. It is often affected by whether your upper and lower teeth are aligned with each other or not.
When the upper teeth overlap the lower, it is called retrusion – and when your lower teeth overlap the upper teeth, it is called protrusion.
Lip positioning affects the attractiveness of your smile a great deal. While aesthetically pleasing smiles have an emotional impact on human perception quite a lot in general, standards of attractiveness vary among cultures and demographics.
For example, in a study of most favoured Iranian facial profiles, average lips were preferred for men, whereas slight retrusion was preferred for women. Meanwhile, this study suggests that people prefer regular lip positions for both males and females.
However, what these studies have in common is that participants rated the extreme protrusion and retrusion (up to 4mm) to be least attractive.
If you have protrusion or retrusion and you’re looking to improve your dental features, it is a good idea to consult your dentist and do a bit of research on which type of lip position you think is ideal for you.
The most common solutions can involve braces and tooth removal.
How Gingival Display Affects Your Aesthetics
Another dental feature that may affect the aesthetics of your smile is Gingival Display – in other words, a gummy smile. How much of your gums are visible when you smile?
Imagine there’s a beautiful model in front of you, and you are in awe of that model’s facial features and expressions until they smile. You find their gums are the exact size of their teeth -the flesh above their teeth is prominently visible and unsettling.
Aren’t huge gums a turnoff? This Japanese study shows that people rated smiles with -1 mm to 0 mm gingival display to be most attractive. Meanwhile, another study says the gingival display of 0 to 1 mm is considered the most beautiful.
What is interesting is that some people associate a bit of gingival display with youthfulness. That being said, a gingival display above 2 mm is still considered unattractive by most people.
Gingival display or a gummy smile can be genetic sometimes, in which case, there’s not much you can do about it. But a lot of times, it can be treated and prevented.
One of the solutions for a gummy smile is gingivectomy.
That can be invasive, uncomfortable, and have a lot of post-op consequences. However, you don’t have to go to such extremes – you can try Invisalign.
How Can Invisalign Improve Your Smile?
Most of the alignment and straightening treatments involve braces, where your teeth are clad with metallic wires to alter their growth and shape of your teeth; some can even require surgery.
Braces can be incredibly uncomfortable, and they make you look weird and feel awful. Braces can kill your smile and affect your image negatively.
Wouldn’t it be helpful if you had something that worked the same way as braces but stayed invisible?
You have that option now.
Invisaligns are custom-fitted aligners that are transparent, therefore, invisible. You can put them on and take them off by yourself, without help from your dentist.
Invisalign can solve several dental problems such as overbite, underbite, crossbite, and other malocclusions that may affect your lip position. Invisalign can also help prevent and treat gingival display or gummy smile.

An attractive smile can make the day better for you – just ask the new Miss Universe Singapore Zahra Khanum. Her million-dollar smile won her the pageant and now she is on her way to charm global audiences with her stunning beauty. Of course, Orchard Scotts Dental had a role to play in creating her beautiful smile.
Visiting a dental clinic in Singapore is critically important for preventative dental care; in short, getting your mouth and teeth examined and cleaned at least twice yearly by a dentist is key to preventing oral health issues.
However, some people just can’t bring themselves to visit a dentist due to fear and anxiety. They would rather endure the pain of a cavity than brave the situation.
Studies suggest that such anxiety is often triggered by even the most harmless situations, such as meeting the receptionist or making an appointment.
Most dentists in Singapore take a two-pronged approach to this issue – first, they identify the source and level of anxiety and then they devise a proper treatment plan with the help of an anaesthetist that involves sedation dentistry.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry was developed to ease the stress and anxiety of dental patients, allowing them to relax and stay clam during an exam or procedure.
Specifically, an anaesthetist administers the required drug before or during the procedure that relaxes you, but won’t entirely knock you out. Simply put, patients are usually awake for the treatment (unless they opt for general anaesthesia).
Remember, an anaesthetist is always on hand for all complex surgical dental cases such as the removal of wisdom tooth or surgical tooth implants. They can help make the experience as comfortable as possible for anxious patients.
Here is how sedation dentistry is applied:
Intravenous Sedation
This is a stronger form of sedation where an anaesthetist injects a sedative into a vein in the arm.
Intravenous sedation is typically used for extremely nervous patients who have to undergo long and complicated dental procedures. It helps them relax, get over their fears and anxieties, and still stay awake throughout the procedure.
Once the check-up or treatment is over, the patient continues to be monitored until they are deemed fit to be discharged.
Nitrous Oxide (Also Called Laughing Gas)
A dentist in Singapore can administer nitrous oxide themselves to calm a patient during a dental surgical procedure. The patient inhales this gas via a rubber face mask with instant results; however, the effect wears off rapidly once the gas is turned off.
This is considered a very reliable method of getting patients to relax and the results are superior as well. In fact, as per research: “The induction and recovery times were significantly shorter with nitrous oxide and the standard of dental treatment was better.”
As soon as the procedure is over and the effect of the laughing gas wears off, patients can drive home by themselves.
Some people believe that general anaesthesia is the best option for them during a dental procedure. The reality is that it has more potential side effects compared to other forms of sedation dentistry as it renders the patients unresponsive and unconscious.
In addition, it can cause temporary memory loss, nausea, dizziness and patients may also experience bruising and soreness after waking up.
The Advantages Of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation is the safest and most effective way to relieve the fear associated with a visit to the dentist. Other benefits of it include:
Relaxation – Decreases stress and helps you remain calm
Control of Gag Reflex – Helps you overcome gag reflexes, enabling you to get quality treatment
Movement Control – Reduces involuntary movements and helps the dentist carry out the treatment in a more comprehensive manner
Cooperation – A restless patient can become uncooperative, making it difficult for the dentist to deliver proper dental care
Do You Need Sedation Dentistry?
Patients consider undergoing sedation dentistry for a variety of reasons.
Do you recognize any of the following issues within you? If the answer is yes, then you may be the right candidate for sedation dentistry.
Past traumatic experience with dental work
Low pain threshold
Sensitive oral nerves
Sore mouth due to extended dental work
Resistance or allergy to local anaesthesia
General anxiety disorder
Concern about keeping the mouth open for long periods
A pronounced gag reflex
Complex medical condition
Physical and/or mental disabilities
Time constraint — want to undergo several procedures in fewer visits
If you have any of these problems, then it’s a good idea to ask your dentist about sedation dentistry.
Will You Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?
Dentists apply sedation dentistry for a variety of dental work, including dental extractions, dental implantation and root canal to name a few. It’s important to note that sedation is not considered a good idea for regular cleaning and routine care, unless absolutely necessary.
If you have a fear of needles, then IV sedation itself may cause more trouble than the dental work. In such a case, dentists simply use Nitrous Oxide gas to sedate you.
Similarly, if you are worried about being vulnerable or the sedation wearing off while you are in the chair, then a local anaesthetic might be your best bet.
Simply put, it is possible to have an entirely pain-free and relaxing experience when you go for your dental treatment with this option.
You Can Count On Orchard Scotts Dental

An attractive smile can make the day better for you – just ask the new Miss Universe Singapore Zahra Khanum. Her million-dollar smile won her the pageant and now she is on her way to charm global audiences with her stunning beauty. Of course, Orchard Scotts Dental had a role to play in creating her beautiful smile.
A lovely smile isn’t just pleasing to the eye, it also adds magnetism and confidence to one’s personality.
As per a survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 92% of the respondents believe that a smile is a valuable social asset. Similarly, studies show that good teeth can have a significant impact on a person’s confidence levels.
But what makes a smile look attractive?
To us, a smile is beautiful when the teeth are perfectly shaped, aligned, and in line with the natural structure of your face. It is also important that the teeth are a natural shade of white, one that fits well with the overall aesthetics and don’t look artificial at all. We are all about smiles that are ‘naturally’ perfect.
If your teeth are lacking in any of these departments, then you may need a ‘Smile Makeover’. So, if you aren’t happy with your smile, it may be time to get a consultation with us.
What Is A Smile Makeover And How It Can Help Me?
This is the method of transforming less-than-perfect teeth into a spectacular, pageant-worthy smile.
During a smile makeover, our dentists create a customised plan that combines several dental treatments for your teeth. These treatments not only offer aesthetic benefits and help your self-image, but also improve the overall health of your teeth and gums.
A smile makeover can make you feel better by:
Replacing missing teeth
Fixing damaged, decayed or uneven teeth
Correcting a disproportionate gum line
Fixing an improper bite
Realigning crooked teeth
But before your smile makeover strategy is finalized, we will first examine your oral health to ensure that you are a good candidate for the treatment. We will look at your gums, teeth, bite and the underlying support structure of your teeth.
If they discover any oral health issues, for example gum disease, bruxism, untreated decay or severe misalignment, they will need to be treated first before you can get a smile makeover.
Once the initial consultation is done, we dentist will begin devising a comprehensive plan for your smile makeover.
The Smile Makeover Process
Your dentist will take into account your existing gum health, facial structure, skin tone, and hair colour, etc. to develop the game plan for your perfect smile.
They they’ll share the treatment plan with you to ensure that you are comfortable and ready for each step towards a better smile.
When you have worked out the ideal treatments, your dentist will make a mock-up of your mouth to show you what your smile will look like once you’ve had the makeover. This may be a real 3D version; meaning that you can even try it on or it can be in the form of a digital mock-up just to show you what awaits you at the other end.
This is the right time to ask questions about the upcoming makeover and request any changes in the mock-up to reflect your brand new smile.
Common Smile Makeover Techniques
Smile makeovers consist of a wide assortment of cosmetic dentistry techniques. Since these treatments are personalized for the client’s needs, the combinations are virtually endless.
Common combinations include:
Teeth Whitening
Diet, age, genetics etc. can slowly discolour teeth and it can be challenging to get back the porcelain white look without a dentist’s help.
Your dentist will fix this problem with a comprehensive teeth whitening procedure as part of your bespoke smile makeover plan.
Reshaping And Contouring
Teeth with chipped edges and rough contours can be fixed easily in the dentist’s chair. Similarly, there’s a process called gum re-contouring that fixes the problem of small teeth or gums that are too visible above the teeth.
Missing teeth
Replacement of missing teeth using dental implants is an integral part of your smile makeover.
Your dentist will ensure that your new teeth match perfectly with all your original teeth, making your smile naturally charming. If need be, they can also recommend partial or full dentures depending on the extent of the damage.
Orthodontic Treatment
This may be where your dentist chooses to start the smile makeover, especially if you have slightly crooked teeth. Clear braces such as Invisalign are great at subtly straightening out teeth and the best part is that instead of traditional metal brackets, this treatment uses clear plastic aligners that are barely visible.
The Result Is Worth Smiling About
A smile makeover at Orchard Scotts Dental can give you a beautiful smile that you need to feel confident.
From dental imagery to laser-powered teeth whitening procedures, we give you a smile that is just as distinctively stunning as you.

Your teeth are beautiful, but sometimes it can be your gums that make you lose confidence in your smile.
Although it varies from person to person, a ‘gummy’ smile is where the gum tissues are too visible or over-prominent compared to your teeth.
According to statistics, about 10% of all 20 to 30 year-olds have this so-called gingival or ‘gummy’ smile.
The perfect smile is one where gums aren’t visible at all and only the upper incisors can be seen. Even the lower front teeth should only be minimally visible when you smile.
A gummy smile, on the other hand, shows more than 2 mm of upper gum – anything less is usually considered normal.

Patients aren’t usually fond of this look and often complain about a smile that appears to be childish or ruins their well-polished look. Let us explore the topic of gummy smiles and how your dentist can create the perfect smile for you.
What Causes A Gummy Smile?
There is no denying the fact that a beautiful smile has an impact on all areas of your life. So when something feels a little off’ about the way we smile, it’s only natural to become concerned.
Here are several reasons why your gums might have become longer and more prominent than the teeth:
A short upper lip
An upper lip that moves too much (hypermobile)
A Vertical Maxillary Excess (VME)
An extreme overbite
Teeth that haven’t completely erupted through the bone (Altered Active Eruption)
Gums that haven’t receded despite advancing age (Altered Passive Eruption)

Sometimes, the muscles that control the upper lip are super hyperactive. So anytime you talk or smile, they move higher than usual, exposing too much gum tissue and compromising the quality of your smile.
Other times, teeth appear short even if they are the right length because they haven’t emerged entirely from the gum and are still covered excessively by gum tissue.
Another problem is the development of the jaw bone itself; for example, if the upper jaw bulges within the gum tissue, the result will be an undeniable gummy appearance every time you smile.
It is interesting to see that the causes of a gummy smile are associated with the teeth, gums, jaws and lips – all the essential components of a perfect smile.
How Can My Dentist Help Correct My Gummy Smile?
If you feel shy and self-conscious when smiling, the right gummy smile treatment can help you build your confidence.
In a study titled Treatment of Gummy Smile of Multifactorial Etiology: A Case Report, it was reported that ‘’aesthetic crown lengthening and a subsequent lip repositioning procedure’’ worked well for a teenager with gummy smile caused by an ‘’altered passive eruption and hyperactive lip.’’
A number of dentists use laser instead of a scalpel for this gum re-contouring procedure, which has been made a lot less invasive compared to old-fashioned surgical techniques.
There is no need to use injectable anaesthesia in a majority of cases – also, you will not require stitches following the laser surgery which makes this treatment completely safe.
The laser gently cuts away excessive gum tissue, while also cauterizing it simultaneously. This way, there is little to no bleeding and zero chances of infection.
Laser Gum Recontouring and Reshaping is an advanced procedure that results in an even gum line and a beautiful smile. During this process, dentists remove or lessen thick gum tissue or short teeth – you will also find that your comfort has increased, along with enhanced periodontal health. This procedure can usually be part of a smile makeover that an aesthetic dental clinic like Orchard Scotts Dental can do along with other procedures like Invisalign for associated issues like overbites.
There is virtually no downtime needed after this procedure; your gums will only be a little swollen and a bit sore for at least a week. In other words, you can easily continue to eat and drink as you please.
However, your dentist may advise you to avoid spicy or other such foods that may get stuck between the teeth and cause discomfort.
There are several other ways that your dentist can help you as well. These include:
Orthodontic treatment – This helps fix over-erupted teeth and positions them correctly using braces or Invisalign.
Botox – This is a modern method of correcting a gummy smile that fixes hypermobile lips with a few injections. The results are temporary and you may need to get another Botox treatment in a couple of months.
These treatment options have been tried and tested, and have resulted in great smiles for patients across the world.
Since each case is different, it is usually a good idea to ask your dentist about the best possible treatment option for you. For example, you may find that Botox is a better fit for you in case there are expected complications with orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign are revolutionary, teeth-straightening aligners that can be custom-built for teenagers, and adults. They are virtually invisible and offer a discreet method of straightening your teeth for a gorgeous smile.
These aligners are switched in almost two weeks, and generally have to be worn for 6 to 18 months for the best results. The amount of time required usually varies, as it also depends on the condition of the teeth.
Invisalign is similar to a retainer, and is specially created to keep your teeth from moving out of place. It requires the application of top-notch technology to create impressions of the patient’s teeth, so as to build a unique mold.
Once you’ve decided to opt for Invisalign aligners, there are certain special measures you will need to take to ensure optimal oral hygiene.
Since the plastic aligners are prone to collecting bacteria which can cause tooth decay, care will need to be taken to keep them cleaned.
Also, be sure to wear them for the number of hours that your orthodontist has recommended (usually 22 hours), as failure to do so can extend treatment time unnecessarily.
How Invisalign Is Different From Traditional Braces
Invisalign brings a whole new dimension of convenience and ease to teeth correction and alignment.
Unlike conventional methods, this doesn’t require patients to make major changes to their diet, or lifestyle.
People can easily take out their aligners when flossing, brushing, or even eating – a serious advantage over other braces that come with complicated oral care, and are also prone to damage by chewy, or hard foods.
Invisalign is also more aesthetically pleasing than typical wires and metal brackets around your teeth. The plastic material is gentle on your gums and cheeks, thus saving you from getting scrapes and cuts inside your mouth.
Maintaining Your Oral Hygiene
Daily dental hygiene with Invisalign does not require a lot of special care – it is just like the normal routine that you already follow.
For example, you will need to properly floss after every meal, and brush your teeth twice (for a minimum of two minutes) every day.
Ensure that your toothbrush is at a 45-degree angle at the gum line, and your gums are properly stimulated with the strokes. Remember, dentists generally recommend replacing your toothbrush every three months, or so.
Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well, going as far back as possible.
While you will be regularly visiting your orthodontist throughout the Invisalign treatment, it is still important to visit a dentist in the same office.
A good dentist can guide you on how to maintain proper oral hygiene, and is also qualified to carry out professional cleanings to ensure that there is no plague build-up, or tooth decay.
Cleaning Your Aligners
Before you start cleaning your aligners, you need to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent environmental microorganisms from contaminating the dental trays.
It is extremely important to clean your aligners before you put the tray back in after eating, and repeat this step at least twice a day. If this practice isn’t followed religiously, it can lead to bacteria and food build-up in the plastic tray – which further increases the risk of tooth discoloration, and even cavity formation.
While cleaning them with a fluoride toothpaste, or even mild soap works just fine, for optimal results, you should invest in a special cleaning kit available for Invisalign.
It is important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, cotton swab, or even a piece of cloth while cleaning. This is because brushes with hard bristles can scratch the plastic, and reduce the transparency of the trays.
Another tip is to only use warm water when rinsing off the trays, as cold or hot water can cause the aligners to change shape – meaning that they will no longer fit well in your mouth.
Also, it is a good idea to restrict the use of denture cleaners and mouthwash after putting on the trays.
Taking Care Of Your Teeth During Treatment
While it is always recommended to brush, floss, and rinse your teeth with mouthwash, this practice becomes increasingly important when undergoing Invisalign treatment.
Normally, your saliva works well to remove food particles and bacteria. So, even if you forget to brush once or twice, it isn’t a big deal – as long as you brush and floss the minute you remember.
However, if the aligner is reinserted without properly cleaning your teeth, it will trap these particles in close contact with your teeth for long periods. This can prove to be disastrous for your overall oral hygiene.
In case you’re unable to brush your teeth, rinse your mouth thoroughly, and chew on sugarless gum before putting in the tray.
Also, remember to drink lots of water with meals, as it helps flush out the food and other particles.
Things To Avoid
Here are some things to avoid during your treatment:
Frequent Snacking or Sipping
This will cause you to remove your aligner quite often, as foods and drinks shouldn’t be taken in with them on – and it’s generally not a good idea to remove your aligners too often.
Additionally, this habit also causes increased acid attacks on your enamel – ultimately causing it to wear down.
Drinking Coffee
Coffee doesn’t only cause teeth stains; it also helps the bacteria in your mouth produce acids. These acids make the teeth brittle, and thin out the enamel.
Avid coffee drinkers should have a little to eat, and use toothbrushes and tongue scrapers before reinserting the Invisalign trays.
Also, residue from food and drink like coffee can cause the aligners to stain, thereby disrupting their ‘invisible’ effect.
In Conclusion
The Invisalign treatment is currently the most advanced form of teeth restructuring technique. When continued properly, it can make oral hygiene easier for patients, especially compared to traditional braces.
The best part is that the trays are cheap, so there is no need to fret over regular replacements.

While you’re on your way to straight teeth and a bright smile with your Invisalign aligners, the journey can sometimes be a little painful.
Despite the Invisalign treatment being relatively pain free, a study reported that up to 54% of users feel mild pain while wearing their aligners.
What sort of pain can you encounter with Invisalign, and why?
You may feel discomfort in your mouth for two main reasons once you start using Invisalign:
It applies pressure on your teeth
It may irritate your soft tissue
While the first reason is actually the good kind, and usually indicates that your aligners are working, the second kind may be due to sharp aligner edges, and may require you to contact your dentist.
However, if you need extra help to get you through the pain, follow these tips:
Wait A Few Days
Your teeth sometimes need 2 to 3 days to get used to the constant pressure being applied on them.
So, before you resort to any pain alleviation methods, just wait for a few days, and chances are that it will go away on its own.
Avoid Crunchy Foods
While an important feature of aligners is that they allow you to eat anything you want, you should try to avoid crunchy foods like ice that require excessive chewing.
Your teeth are already under pressure for 22 hours a day, trying to get in shape – hence, adding the stress of hard-to-bite foods can cause unnecessary pain.
Use Cold Compress Outside The Mouth
If the pain is hard to adjust to, use a cold compress and press it over your mouth. This will help numb your jaw and mouth, and ease some of the pain you have been feeling.
Repeat this any number of times during the day, until you’ve adjusted to your new Invisalign aligners.
Use Orthodontic Wax
If the corners of your aligners seem to always irritate your gums, cheeks or tongue no matter how many times you’ve had them re-fitted, then it may be time to invest in orthodontic wax.
Just apply a little of orthodontic wax on any part of the aligner that you find uncomfortable, and there’s a good chance that it will prevent it from irritating your soft tissue further.
If the problem still continues, get in touch with us for a comprehensive consultation.
Bite On Invisalign Chewies
The pain you are experiencing could just be because your mouth is adjusting to the change. Biting down on Invisalign chewies can help you work out some of pain, and allow you to get used to your aligners quickly.
These chewies also help ensure that the aligners fit tightly on your teeth, and eliminate any discomfort that may be originating due to a poor fit.
You can easily get chewies from our dentists. Just set up an appointment and discuss the fit of your aligner, and how it needs to be dealt with.
Use Aligner Retriever Tools
Sometimes, the only discomfort you feel is when you take your aligner off or put it on. While you may eventually get the hang of this process, you can avoid the pain by simply investing in aligner retriever tools.
These tools are usually made of surgical steel, and are very easy to clean – in fact, you can easily slip your aligners in and out of your mouth with minimal pain and discomfort.
Consult our dentists if the pain persists every time you change your aligner; we can help you manage it better.
Time It Right
The best time to put a new aligner in, is right before going to bed at night. This way, you will sleep through the first few hours of discomfort.
It will also give your aligners more time to sit on your teeth before you need to take them out for food, or for brushing your teeth.
Use Over The Counter Pain Relief
While this should be your very last resort, if you simply cannot bear the pain then this might be an option for you.
Consult our dentists for safe over the counter pain relief options, and even get a prescription.
Over-the-counter pain relievers are non-steroidal inflammatory drugs that are safe to use as long as you stick to the correct dosage. They can help alleviate any pain or discomfort that may be caused by your new aligners.
Compared to traditional metal braces which have uncomfortable material and apply more pressure than Invisalign (which is specifically structured for your teeth), the discomfort caused by aligners is bearable, and at times, barely noticeable.
The tips we’ve provided will help you easily navigate the slight discomfort to a better looking smile, but this does not mean that the pain will go away completely.
Like we said, the pressure you feel on your teeth is a sign that your aligners are doing their job. This constant pressure, 20 plus hours a day is what helps straighten your teeth, so don’t let a little discomfort stand in the way of a bright and straight smile! Contact us now for a consultation and start your journey to the perfect smile.

According to conclusive evidence available from a scientific study conducted on Invisalign, the treatment emerges as an effective approach to teeth alignment in comparison to traditional procedures.
This may be in lieu of various reports suggesting the in-clinic Invisalign treatment being suitable for both, mild and complex cases. It is an aesthetically pleasing alternative to metal braces that safely straightens dental arches, premolar rotational movements, extrusion of maxillary incisors, and overbite control.
Invisalign, however, requires some commitment on the patients’ part to deliver notable results. It also requires a little extra care when managing and maintaining the kit and teeth. There are certain things that you need to careful about with Invisalign and through out the duration of the treatment.
Having said that, here are some beneficial tips for Invisalign patients.
1 – Fitting Related Issues? Skip The Hacks & Seek Professional Consultation
It is fairly common for new patients to experience a slight pulling force in their gums after completing their first Invisalign session. This feeling usually wears off as the mouth and teeth begin to get used to the new conditions. Some patients have also reported soreness and discomfort around the edges of their gums; where the top of the aligner trays meet the flesh.
For temporary relief, patients are typically advised to rub wax on the troublesome edges, or file the aligner trays. However, these hacks are more often known to alter the shape of the trays, affecting the progress of the aligning process.
It is advised that you schedule an appointment with your dentist and seek professional help when experiencing discomfort. Your dental professional will thoroughly evaluate your condition, and identify the source of comfort. For most cases, the dentist simply adjusts the fit and design of the tray.
2 – Remove Trays Only When Necessary
The progress and results brought forth by the Invisalign treatment are purely based on patient compliance, with variations in recommended usage times likely to slow down, or quicken the aligning process. It is recommended to wear the treatment trays for at least 20 continuous hours a day, whereas 22-hours are suggested for optimal results.
Eating necessitates removal of aligner trays for hygiene reasons, and for patients’ ease, the trays can be removed up to three times a day. However, removal periods must not exceed over 40 minutes. Limit the removal time for vital tasks only, such as brushing, eating, or flossing, and remember to wear them again as soon as possible after concluding a thorough dental cleaning regime.
3 – Always Carry a Cleaning Kit
It is not discouraged to drink fluids while wearing Invisalign aligner trays; however, beverages such as tea, coffee or juices when consumed with a straw can contaminate the trays; requiring a thorough cleaning process. To decontaminate the trays, start with brushing the exterior shell with a gentle toothbrush and warm water, gradually moving to the interior inlay, scrubbing it with a back and forth brushing movement. Avoid using toothpaste to clean your Invisalign trays, since abrasive ingredients can result in a murky colour, giving the appearance of yellowed teeth.
Wearing aligner trays on dirty teeth can trap bacteria, leading to periodontal issues. During travel, work, or leisure, patients cannot be expected to brush after every meal, which is why it is useful to carry a cleaning kit.
4 -Avoid Quick-Fix Devices
Patients eager to achieve aesthetic results quickly often fall prey to the unfound claims of several different devices devices in the market. These devices target an ill-informed audience and drain their savings through quick-fix scams. It is important to note that teeth alignment therapy is a highly technical process, and one that requires the expertise and care of a thorough professional.
DIY in-mail aligner tray use is strongly discouraged by the ADA , and said to carry definite risks causing irreparable damage. Vibrational-stimulus-causing orthodontic devices claiming to quicken the Invisalign treatment process also lack any conclusive evidence in clinical studies, deeming their claims of accelerating the alignment process dubious. It is important to only invest time and finances in treatments backed up by research.
Invisalign treatments require commitment and care on part of the patients. Practicing unprofessional hacks or neglecting oral health or may result in deterioration of tooth and gum conditions, with possible chances of developing tooth loss or decay.
Studies suggest receiving preventive dental treatments can enhance the value of dental treatments. To receive Invisalign treatment in Singapore suited to your needs, a consultation with an experienced dental professional can get you on your way to exceptional results.

With 1 out of 5 Americans feeling anxiety and an unsettling impact on their mental wellbeing due to the condition of their teeth, the surge in the desire to receive corrective treatment is understandable. When considering options for teeth alignment, people often have queries related to the cost-effectiveness in terms of value provided by the various treatments available in the market.
Owing to advancements in dental technology, the orthodontic aligner market is experiencing a surge in tele-dentistry as new startups shift their services online.
Align Technologies, which previously held a monopoly in clear aligner tech, has served over 6 million satisfied patients. However, it currently faces competition from companies based on a direct-to-consumer business structure. In-mail businesses offer inexpensive products developed around the concept of user facilitation, and reduced overhead costs.
With over 23% Americans feeling embarrassment in social situations due to poor dental conditions, in-mail companies promise to break existing barriers faced by individuals intending to attain dental services. These include inflated cost of in-clinic treatments and need for costly professional consultations, medicines, and dental gear.
Invisalign however offers benefits far outweighing its cost of procedure; it provides a lasting positive impact on orthodontic conditions, despite the notion that it offers little flexibility to manage progress by the individual themselves. With new startups offering in-mail delivery of bigger smiles at a fraction of the cost; a critical question arises, is a little convenience worth risking the future of your teeth?
Similarities & Differences Between Invisalign & In-mail Oral Services
At face value, both services may seem identical; smooth aligner-trays help create movement in the teeth of approximately ¼-millimeters to reposition them in a predetermined fashion. Both are removable, resulting in effective oral hygiene; while studies state aligning trays lower risk of accumulation of plaque and gingival inflammation. However, major differences lie in the tray design, cost structure, and business model, which directly impact the long term visual results.
DIY in-mail services offer flexible payment plans, costing as cheap as $750, yet this benefit may be offset by a generic one-fits-all tray designs. Invisalign trays are scalloped on top, highly customised to uniquely fit a mouth. It provides a better fit on teeth, leaving less chances of error, unlike that experienced in DIY in-mail kits.
The costs and maintenance of Invisalign varies, depending on the intensity and duration of the procedure. However, this includes professional assessment by qualified and seasoned dental professionals, closely following the in-clinic monitoring of the alignment’s progress.
Although both pose as far progressive treatment options in terms of flexibility, comfort, and hygiene to metal braces, in-mail oral services are well suited for mild to moderate levels of dental complexity. Teeth requiring highly complex and technical repositions or bite restructures cannot be catered to by these methods. In-mail oral services thus emerge as a constrained alternative to in-clinic based treatments.
Why Invisalign Is A Better Choice
In-Depth In-Clinic Checkups
In-mail aligner services eliminate the need for visiting professional orthodontists and dentists for in-clinic checkups. These remotely connect patients to dental professionals while Invisalign entails regular in-person consultations and getting Invisalign in Singapore should not be something constrained by distance since it is a small country after all. Periodic check-ins allow for adjustment to the treatment plan, reducing risk of misaligned teeth, or issues such as adverse gum conditions and dental decay. The ADA strongly discourages the public from using in-mail services, passing a resolution highlighting the risks possible due to the lack of professional supervision.
Better Teeth Conditions With Supervision
Improper guidance and incorrect use of clear aligners can lead to problems such as erosion of enamel, bite problems, and even tooth loss in worst case scenarios. The AAO reports a whopping 13% of orthodontists catering to patients suffering from irreparable damage post-usage of DIY aligning kits; a significant enough number to emphasise the red flags raised by such treatments.
Better Control Over Variability Of Results
Invisalign offers better control over results from inception to completion of the process. DIY services may require users to self-measure and create molds, leaving ample room for error. Inaccurate impressions can delay results, misalign the teeth further, and cause mild-to-major discomfort.
Conclusion
Although there are benefits to acquiring in-mail kits to realign your teeth, they do not provide the possibility of definite results, exclusive of errors. Unsupervised progress can lead to irreparable damage and misaligned teeth.
Moving teeth without an extensive assessment of gum and dental conditions, prior to wearing aligning trays can lead to tooth loss and gum disorders. These may require costly treatments, offsetting any savings made by opting for cheap DIY treatments.

However, what is more uncommonly known is that orthodontic treatments have a lasting impact on the overall periodontal health of the mouth post-procedure, which potential patients tend to overlook due to a lack of awareness. The level of discomfort one can expect from any orthodontic treatment, paired with the challenge of choosing the right dental solution can make the task extremely daunting.
With options like wire braces and the Invisalign treatment competing head to head, there are intrinsic mechanisms to each that must be ascertained over their blatant visual differences. A cross sectional study on gingival parameters and patient satisfaction during treatment was conducted to highlight the potential pros and cons of braces and Invisalign treatments.
In a 6-month long scientific study conducted on 139 orthodontic patients; aged between 11 to 62 years, subjects were screened for sulcus bleeding and plaque. All subjects were provided with the same oral hygiene conditions, while all patients underwent the same professional preventative hygiene treatment.
In clinical examinations, it was reported that Invisalign served as a better option to align teeth, with higher patient satisfaction scores, and lower gingival inflammation. In contrast, patients with braces suffered from increased plaque accumulation with a higher susceptibility to decalcifications and white spot lesions.
Invisalign or Braces – Which treatment is better for you?
It is important to note the structural differences of both treatments prior to settling with one. Braces are considered an invasive treatment, consisting of metal or porcelain brackets being glued to the teeth, with titanium or stainless steel wires pulling at them, creating a tightening and aligning effect.
Invisalign, on the other hand, comprises of a sequence of clear liners; custom made to snuggly fit each mouth. The ergonomics of these cause a movement in the teeth of about ¼-millimeter, in the predetermined direction. With the aid of computer simulations, specialists decide the design and function of each aligner, bolstering the pattern of movement intended.
Costs
Patients of braces can expect to be set back anywhere between $1800-6000 while complicated cases can cost up to $10,000. Invisalign’s clear liners are priced at $3500-8000 and can be performed by an orthodontist, or a Dental GP with extensive experience.
This higher cost in comparison to braces is offset by the multiple benefits and conveniences it provides to the patient. Invisalign reduces the risk of periodontal decay and gingival inflammation, resulting in better oral conditions for the patients. This benefit extends from the removable design of the aligner tray.
Maintenance & Cleaning
The brackets and wires used in traditional braces make the cleaning process difficult while its permanently glued nature requires additional cleaning equipment, such as special toothbrushes and water flossers to aid in the removal of debris and food particles that may stick to the wires. Invisalign’s removable features allow more flexibility in keeping an effective and simple oral hygiene routine.
Poor cleaning habits can lead to decalcification, decay, cavities, and gum disorders in the future. Maintaining hygiene with Invisalign is fairly easy and straightforward; with you having to remove the aligners when eating or drinking anything other than water, before bed and when brushing or flossing to give you easier access to your teeth. Caring for your Invisalign aligners typically requires you to keep your trays clean and sanitised and changing your aligners when scheduled.
Durability & Reliability
While braces may seem sturdy, they can prove to be fragile when biting into something hard. The glue may give way if not applied with care or the wire could snap, requiring an emergency visit to the dentist.
Cases better suited for braces are forgetful individuals or younger children prone to misplacing things – given the removable nature of Invisalign. Braces are also suitable for patients requiring highly complex and technical teeth repositions or bite restructures. However, they have been known to cause slight discomfort, with cuts, bleeds, soreness, and even excruciating pain as reported by some patients.
Flexibility of Use
Invisalign works in a way that provides flexibility of use, with no nicks and cuts. It is better suited for busy lifestyles, especially for teens and mature patients and even athletes. However, it does not cater to patients with severe back-tooth bite issues, bridgework, and other similar problems. Compliant patients who wear Invisalign for at least 20 continuous hours a day tend to see faster results; however, the force of both braces and Invisalign determines the speed of the treatment’s progress.
The Verdict
Invisalign reduces the possibility of oral health related issues which may occur with a mismanaged hygiene routine owing to the inflexible nature of braces. While both dental treatments are considered excellent to treat misaligned teeth, for people looking for a more comfortable solution with an easier oral hygiene regimen and maximum benefits – Invisalign proves to be the better choice.
The chances of tooth decay with traditional procedures are higher, making the cost saved on acquiring the procedure ineffective in the long run; the resulting orthodontic conditions may require even costlier treatments to counteract the damage.

All smiles are contagious and possess gratifying qualities that yield emotional responses. When you smile, you invoke a sense of sociability, resulting in favourable first impressions of you. They also elicit a sense of recompense when we receive them from others.
Long before humanity made enough progress in the medical and psychological sciences to discover the benefits of a smile, humans understood the hidden power of this simple gesture; associating it with feelings of happiness, positivity, and content.
For instance, Da Vinci’s Masterpiece “Mona Lisa” still continues to be one of the most famous paintings of all time. The reason: her smile. Seen as the focal point of the painting, her smile evokes a plethora of feelings, catapulting this particular painting’s value; and the facial expression that started it all, beyond just artistic.
Our deep advances into medical technology have provided us with a chance to provide irrefutable scientific data that reiterates the well-known fact – smiling is actually good for you, even when you’re faking it.
The Science Behind Smiling – What Actually Happens In Your Brain
Experts are now unified in the belief that a smile correlates to one’s maximum positive emotional content with many studies to back this up.
When you face a positive situation, the neuron signals travel from the cortex of your brain right to the oldest evolutionary part of your brain: the brainstem. From there, the cranial muscles are tasked to carry the signal further towards the muscles of your face that are responsible for your smile.
Once the smiling muscles contract, the neurons take up the cue and relay the positive feedback back to the brain. This creates a feedback loop, reinstating our feelings of joy. Thus, overtime, studies have only further reinforced what was perceived by scientists long before technology afforded them insight into the human mind.
Charles Darwin, famous for his work on the Theory of Evolution, observed that the act of smiling actually makes us feel better – contrary to the common perception that smiling is a consequence of feeling good.
How Smiling Affects Your Mental State
In a study conducted by a university in Munich, Germany; the patients used functional MRIs to find that facial feedback (such as smile imitation) has the power to alter our neural process of emotional content – concluding that the area of our brain responsible for happiness is activated when we smile.
In another study, smiling was observed to beat chocolate as the most effective pleasure-inducing stimuli. Researchers found that one smile was able to provide the simulation of more than 2000 chocolate bars (!).
Equipped with an electromagnetic brain scanner and a heart-rate monitor as their modus operandi, the researchers further found out that smiling is as positively simulating as receiving approximately SGD $28,291 in cash.
Even if you’re not genuinely happy, a fake smile has the potential to bolster your mood and make you feel better.
How Smiling Affects Your Body
People look better when they smile. This is not just hearsay, but a claim that is backed up by statistical evidence. A smiling face is subjected to extremely different treatment.
A study by Neuropsychologia reported that a smiling face is linked to attractiveness and trust. A smile activates the orbitofrontal cortex, the region of your brain tasked with processing sensory rewards. A smiling person actually feels rewarded, relaxed, and sincere. When you view a smiling person, you are programmed to feel rewarded.
Each time you smile, it releases the neuropeptides that work towards fighting off stress. The neurotransmitters responsible for feeling ‘good,’ namely dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin are released every time you flash a smile – resulting in the stabilization of your heart rate, and blood pressure.
Additionally, the endorphins act as a natural pain reliever – devoid of all negative side effects – to help you heal. The serotonin released by a smile also serves as an anti-depressant, lifting your mood up from whatever is causing a frown. With a smile, you don’t have to worry about a prescription.
How Smiling Affects Those Around You
A smile is also likely to up your impression on the opposite gender, as a study conducted in the University of Aberdeen reveals. Several hundred undergraduate students rated faces for sexual attractiveness – and smiling faces were the clear winner!
‘There is more to a smile than what meets the eye’, is more than just an expression. Smiling actually elicits positive responses from people, and more often than not, they are likely to smile back. The part of your brain that is actually responsible for your smile resides in an unconscious, automatic response area, the cingulate cortex.
There was a Swedish study conducted to test this, and participants found it very hard to frown when presented with a smiling picture. The study concluded that people tend to imitate facial expressions. If seen holistically, each time you pass a smile the other person’s mind manipulates them to pass one back.
An Attractive Smile Can Be An Influential Factor In Your Life
A beautiful smile impacts your confidence, lifestyle, and social life. When a person is focused on hiding their smile, their personality may come across as negative and unwelcoming. Have you ever come across people who don’t smile? These people are perceived to be very off-putting, even though they might be one of the kindest people you know.
Adequate maintenance of oral hygiene is not only imperative to your health but also important for your social life and relationships. Bad oral hygiene or crooked teeth hamper your confidence and have an adverse impact on your life and self-esteem.

All smiles are contagious and possess gratifying qualities that yield emotional responses. When you smile, you invoke a sense of sociability, resulting in favourable first impressions of you. They also elicit a sense of recompense when we receive them from others.
The release of dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin upon experiencing a smile boosts immunity, relieves pain, lowers the heart rate, and transforms your outlook on stress inducing conditions. Whether faced with a crinkly genuine smile or a halfhearted one, they are bound to garner a mental response. Smiling on your own also immediately elevates the mood and counteracts stress, thanks to the release of mood enhancing neurotransmitters.
In a “Duchenne smile”, which a genuine smile is known by – the major zygomatic muscles pull corners of the mouth upwards (resulting in a toothy smile) while the orbicularis oculi muscles form pouches under the eye. These movements induce changes in brain activity, creating a happier vibe. These facial movements also make the face appear friendlier.
According to research studiespublished in Psychological Science, recruiting facial muscles in a fake smile generally associated with a genuine “Duchenne” smile mimics similar results in relaxing the mind and combating stress.
However, not everyone enjoys smiling. Most people do not feel confident enough to smile on their own. This is due to poor conditions of their teeth. Additionally, indifferent attitudes towards cleaning habits lead to tooth decay, gum disorders, and tooth loss, which substantially effects the quality of life. Neglected teeth are linked to poor mental health, and limited psychosocial behaviour in some people.
Studies show that good teeth greatly impact confidence levels while aligned teeth are associated with higher aesthetic qualities. Individuals with prior orthodontic treatments consider their smiles more aesthetically pleasing while 96% of surveyed individuals by the AACD thought whiter smiles make people more attractive.
The unaesthetic appearance of bad teeth reduces self-esteem – especially in young adults. Broken smiles also adversely impact employment opportunities. Stress, disturbed sleep, psychological insecurities, and anxiety are just the tip of the iceberg. Bad oral health is notorious for contributing towards bone diseases and diabetic conditions as well, further adding to the stress in our lives.
Although the neuropeptides released from smiling relieve stress, misaligned or stained teeth keep people from indulging in this act. Almost 18% of individuals suppress their smiles due to terrible dental appearances while 1 in 5 American adults report anxiety due to deteriorating mouth conditions; and 38% of young adults agree that it impacts quality of life and leads to dissatisfaction. Most Americans skip out on regular dental visits due to cost factors. Unfortunately, rising healthcare expenses, coupled with inflation have reduced the affordability of dental treatments for many socio-economic classes.
Adopting healthy oral care routines, investing in oral hygiene products, and a good dental plan could be your first step towards stress-free life. Along with maintaining a frequent brushing habit, you should visit your dentist regularly.
Orchard Scotts Dental Clinic in Singapore offers a suite of signature aesthetic dental treatments to help with your smile makeover. In addition to the non-invasive Invisalign treatment, we also offer dental implants as well as gummy smile treatment among others.

In a recent study, it was found that those who lived to see their 100th birthday have had better oral conditions, and lowered edentulism than others in the same age group. Strong evidence exists to suggest that oral diseases, leading to tooth loss, serve as a prelude to shortened life expectancy.
Many facets of everyday life contribute to tooth loss; some of the most common are improper oral hygiene regimens, socio-economic status, and even bad habits such as smoking. Tooth loss – even when partial is termed as a disability as it decreases self-confidence and sufferers tend to isolate themselves, avoiding social interactions in fear of being judged.
Further proof by the American Dental Association on Oral Health Well-Being, indicates a positive correlation between poor oral health and the dire effects on mental wellbeing. The report states poor conditions of mouth can affect one’s sleep conditions and reduce participation in social activities. 1 out of 5 Americans feel anxiety due to the condition of their teeth while 23% feel embarrassed. In the last 12 months close to 12% of people have given up on smiling due to bad teeth conditions, equivalent to a whopping 1 in every 4 adults.
Poor appearance of teeth also impacts employment outcomes. Around 18% of overall job seekers have felt vulnerable during an interview because of their teeth. Low income households and respondents under 34 years of age feel the most impacted by how interviewers perceive their choppers during job interviews. They are also the ones most likely to feel life is generally less satisfying.
Experiencing a dry mouth could be a side effect of medications in adults with chronic diseases, or smoking and is an indicator for future health issues. Surprisingly, a majority of the respondents across all income levels report to feeling dry mouth in the study. Xerostomia; as it is known in the medical world, brings with it conditions like tooth decay, fungal infections and cavities in the mouth.
As a nation, the US is in need of better dental care habits, and likewise, better access to dental healthcare plans. Only a meager 15% of respondents from low income households report very good overall oral conditions compared to an astounding 46% of high income households. Despite the availability of some of the most advanced dental treatments, the high cost or lack of insurance in most cases contributes to this figure. Majority of low income participants as a result have come to accept the reality that they may lose their teeth with age.
Although attitudes towards healthcare are consistent across various income and age groups in the study, only 37% visited the dentist last year, even though 77% intended to. Access to dental benefits did not guarantee visits either while adults with Medicaid benefits struggled to find suitable dentists. Comparatively, those sourcing dental benefits from private means fare better. The trend signifies that financially- comfortable families frequented their dentists most last year.
Psychological factors also play a significant part in dental visits. Being afraid of the dentist and inconvenience of location were top reasons cited towards missed appointments. Despite the multiple reasons quoted, cost remains the most consequential deterrent. In fact, Americans across all socio-economic and age groups avoid dental treatments due to high costs.
Giving importance to good dental care can aid in extending your lifespan while regular appointments to your dentist can save your smile. Your teeth are the first thing that anyone notices when you talk, and there have been sufficient studies that have reinforced the long-standing stereotype – people are attracted to straighter and whiter teeth.
According to a UN report, Singapore has dropped from being one of the top 25 happiest countries in the world in 2016 to the 34th position in 2018. In another report, the World Health Organization (WHO) deems it the country with the highest rate of depression.
Its thriving GDP and rising salaries fails to keep citizens happy as they compete in the race towards the illusory promises of capitalism.
In such rough times, a smile can be a calming remedy, proven by science to elevate the senses. It stimulates the production of feel good neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins; positively impacting the human psyche. Even observing a smile stimulates the positive psychological and physiological factors.
The act of smiling has pleasant effects on health and immunity. Something we all need more of, and in abundance. But not all smiles generate similar ecstatic responses in humans. In a UK based study, conducted on 109 volunteers – followed by a poll on 1000 adults, it is reported that people assign varying mood-boosting values to different smiles.
The gratifying qualities of various smiles differ depending on who owns them and its visual aesthetic. The study assigns monetary values reflecting how much each smile would cost if we were to pay for its benefits.
The Richest Smile
If smiling was currency, children would be the richest. Observing just one smile on a child creates stimulating sensations comparable to receiving 16,000 pounds sterling or eating 2000 chocolate bars. That equates to almost SG$ 28,000 in local currency.
This is closely followed by the smiles of people we love, which would set you back 8,500 pounds sterling; or 600 chocolates. Catching the smile of a friend would not be cheap either. Just one smile is worth 145 sterling pounds.
Halo Effect
Every smile triggers a specific emotion in the observer. Receiving a smile back from an important person triggers strong emotions, fastening the memory with other memorable events from the past.
These positive emotions enable us to weigh the feelings triggered during the observation, and can be translated into words we use to describe the smiles. Some smiles are thus welcoming and friendly while others are dishonest and hypocritical. The condition and alignment of your teeth also play an important role in the value of your smile.
Smiles on favorite celebrities trigger better emotions, placing them at a greater value while those possessed by politicians or royalty fare poorly in comparison.
Real Vs Fake
All smiles are contagious, yet not all are considered sincere. A real smile uses more facial muscles, resulting in the formation of crinkles and pouches under the eyes while showing-off your maintained teeth. This makes the face appear friendlier and inviting.
Tight-lipped smiles, are good at hiding less than perfect teeth; however, they also lead to doubts regarding sincerity. Thus, faces that smile with their teeth, eyes, and even noses rate better with observers.
Let’s Get Smiling
As the old rhyme goes:
‘A smile is something nice to see, It doesn’t cost a cent A smile is something all your own, It never can be spent’
Thanks to the research, we now know just how valuable a smile can be; be it a loved one’s or your own for others! To keep yourself and those around you happier, take care of your teeth and help those around you integrate proper oral hygiene regimens in their daily life.
If you’re unhappy with your smile, there are a multitude of treatments to help you get comfortable. Aesthetic dental clinics such as Orchard Scotts Dental in Singapore can help you remove plaque or smoke stains from your teeth with their teeth whitening services, and even offer Invisalign or porcelain veneers to help with crooked teeth or dental implants for missing teeth. For an effective smile makeover, consult an aesthetic dental clinic to ensure straight pearly whites that flash a SG$ 28000 smile.

A set of clean pearly white teeth is associated with beauty, health, happiness, and cleanliness. Practically, everybody desires to have them. The good thing is that, if you reside in Singapore, a teeth whitening procedure is fairly inexpensive and is offered in almost all dental clinics in the country. Research has shown that teeth whitening procedure conducted by a professional dentist is quite safe, and has very few minor side effects.
The Benefits of a Teeth Whitening Procedure
The most evident benefit of whitening your teeth is having an enhanced, whiter and brighter smile that improves your appearance. However, besides the aesthetic gains associated with teeth whitening, other benefits include:
Helps manage halitosis – or chronic bad breath
Increased self-confidence
Boosts your self-esteem
Types of stains treated by Singapore dentists
Teeth stains can be categorized as intrinsic or extrinsic stains.
Intrinsic stains
Intrinsic stains may occur at the enamel or to some extent, the dentin (layer of tissue directly underneath the enamel). These stains give the teeth a grayish or yellowish color. This may be triggered by several factors:
Dental trauma – Teeth can be stained from the inside as result of internal bleeding. This sometimes leads to decay, eventually giving the teeth a blueish-brown stain.
Antibiotics – Giving certain antibiotics to kids whose teeth are in the development stage can lead to staining.
Environmental factors – Fluoride is believed to cause teeth staining if consumed in large amounts.
Genetic factors – A small percentage of people who have congenital problems may also have stained teeth.
Age-related factors – The superficial layer of the enamel gets eroded as we age, leaving the dentin exposed. The dentin may turn yellow due to this exposure.
Extrinsic stains
Extrinsic stains take place when the superficial layer of the tooth (enamel), is stained. Just like intrinsic stains, there are also various causes for this:
Smoking – Tar and nicotine in tobacco stain the necks of the teeth, giving the teeth a brown/yellowish color.
Diet – Habitually consuming colored foods like tea, red wines, cola and coffee stains your teeth over time.
Poor dental hygiene – Accumulated dental plague can eventually turn into stains, which varies between black, brown, yellow or grey.
Popular types of teeth whitening
In-clinic whitening (Chairside)
Essentially involves two sessions
Light systems and special gels are used to accelerate the process
Fast, higher cost
Take home whitening
Perfect if you want slightly whiter lighter teeth.
The dentist will take an outline of your teeth to engineer bespoke trays which fits the teeth.
The whitening gel is put in the trays. These trays are worn by the patient for a half an hour a day, for approximately two weeks.
Inexpensive
Takes more time than in-clinic treatment
Which is the fastest and effective way to whiten your teeth?
If you need your teeth to be as white as they can naturally look, your best bet would be in-office teeth whitening. The first in-clinic session usually takes around 90 minutes, during which your smile makeover specialist will carry out standard scaling and polishing. The scaling helps get rid of surface tints so that your teeth can come into direct contact with the whitening gel.
For most in-office whitening treatments, a good number of people can attain reasonable results in one session. Nonetheless, if you have extremely discolored teeth, you will need a few sessions of in-house teeth-whitening to achieve your desired results.
The whitening gel is also only successful in healthy, natural teeth. For instance, if you have tooth decay which is causing the staining, it has to be gotten rid of before bleaching can be effective. Additionally, other substances like crowns or dental fillings cannot be bleached.
Combining treatments
Teeth whitening can be combined with other restorative or cosmetic treatments for an all-inclusive result. For example, when porcelain veneers or dental crowns are placed, especially in front of your cosmetic dentist may suggest you first undergo a teeth whitening procedure so that colour of your teeth can match the restoration done.
Additionally, if you have completed a smile makeover treatment that includes re-aligning your teeth with Invisalign, whitening can balance the hue of your teeth to guarantee eye-catching results. Completing a general dentistry checkup or treatment can be another ideal time to take up teeth whitening.
Is teeth whitening painful?
Teeth whitening procedures are usually painless. A few people though may experience a slight dull ache and transitory teeth sensitivity. It is advisable to avoid very cold or hot drinks for the first day if you are experiencing any form of sensitivity. Usually, a desensitizing gel is prescribed after the procedure to address this issue.
Other known side effects, include white patches on the gum line, sore throat, mouth ulcers, and irritation of gingival tissues. If you are experiencing other forms of side effects, make an effort of discussing this with your dentists.
How long do the teeth whitening effect last?
After the procedure, the dentist will teach you on how to retain that new bright smile. The whitening effect can last from several months up to three years. However, this can vary for each person depending on their lifestyles. For example, consumption of colored drinks like coffee or smoking excessively can potentially stain your teeth.
Is teeth-whitening at the dental clinic cost-effective?
Although the cost of in-clinic whitening treatment is higher than take-home treatment, it guarantees quicker results, and also the probability of procedural errors is reduced. Normally, after the initial diagnosis, the dentist will advise you on the proper treatment plan according to your unique circumstances and financial options.
Ensure you visit a trusted dental clinic
It is advisable to visit a qualified dentist who can conduct the teeth whitening procedure competently and safely. Your teeth are the first thing that anyone notices when you talk, and there have been sufficient studies that have reinforced the long-standing stereotype – people are attracted to straighter and whiter teeth.
As people tend to grow increasingly conscious of their appearance and hygiene, there has been a resurgence in the number of people visiting the dentists to have a complete inspection of their oral hygiene, and further, eliminate any problems that adversely affect their teeth – such as misalignment of teeth.
As one of the most effective ways to treat misaligned teeth, Invisalign in Singapore has garnered special attention in recent years. As curiosity around these ‘clear braces’ continues to grow, here we answer the top 10 most frequently asked questions.
What Actually Is Invisalign?
There seems to be relative confusion as to what actually is Invisalign. An Invisalign treatment entails providing a remedy for misaligned and crooked teeth by wearing a set of clear and removable ‘aligners’ that eventually work to straighten your teeth.
Invisalign was actually introduced to rival traditional braces – removing the excessive problems that come with metal brackets, wires, and a load of restrictions.
What Are Invisalign Made Of?
The most distinct feature of the Invisalign is their clear color, which comes from flexible plastic. The flexible plastic is made of a patented thermoplastic material named ‘SmartTrack.’
It is a trademark material which is produced specifically and exclusively for Invisalign. The advantage of this material is that it’s approved by the Food and Drinks Authority (FDA) and is free from any latex or gluten that can cause allergic reactions in some people.
Is Invisalign Expensive?
Questions regarding the cost of the treatment are most frequent among patients. In the case of Invisalign, it is affordable and not expensive. Find our more about the cost of Invisalign here.
For most customers who require Invisalign, the cost falls around the same price as a normal set of braces. However, the true cost of the treatment is dependent on your dentist’s analysis and how many aligners you require.
Is Invisalign Painful?
No. Invisalign is very comfortable and doesn’t cause pain to the patient. Particularly when compared with traditional metal braces, Invisalign doesn’t hurt at all.
The only cause of pain can be mild soreness initially as the teeth take time to adjust to the aligners. Other than that, another source of discomfort might be the presence of an external component (Invisalign) in your mouth.
While patients on traditional braces needed weeks to develop callouses to combat metal-induced sensitivity, Invisalign needs considerably lesser time for your mouth to adapt to it. One thing that patients need to remember when opting for Invisalign is the fact that it constitutes as orthodontic treatment.
A little soreness in exchange for straighter teeth and a healthy smile is not a bad deal, right?
How Does Invisalign Work?
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign makes use of the latest technology that maps out the exact surface and movement of your teeth using technology like iTero. This mapping process is done digitally to ensure the aligners are a perfect fit and don’t need the ‘tightening’ associated with braces.
Cosmetic dentists that use Invisalign ensure it is designed to enforce the right amount of force at the right place so your teeth are aligned without any discomfort.
Can I Eat With My Invisalign Aligners On?
The great thing about using Invisalign is that they prove no hurdle when enjoying a visit to your favorite burger joint. For anyone who has worn braces, you may remember the restrictions imposed on the foods you can eat.
Invisalign is removable, which means whenever you’re eating, drinking, brushing, or flossing – you can simply remove your aligners. Just make sure to put them back on when done, as the more you wear them, the faster your teeth straighten.
Do You Need ‘Attachments’ With Invisalign?
No. Not every patient requires attachments when using Invisalign.
However, while we’re discussing attachments, some patients do require them (which are small, tooth-colored shape tagged to your teeth) as they provide a ‘handle’ for the aligners. Invisalign needs something to attach to or push on as it attempts to straighten your teeth.
Do Aligners Regular Maintenance?
Aligners are attached to your teeth, so even if they don’t need regular maintenance and rewiring – you would be wise to do your due diligence to keep them clean.
Experts recommend cleaning them using a toothbrush and toothpaste, gently. To wash the aligners, make sure you only use lukewarm water. It is important to note that never use hot water as it could permanently disfigure your aligners.
In addition to maintenance, food and drink residue can cause aligners to stain. This is why dental hygiene experts advise brushing after every meal, particularly when you have aligners on.
Lastly, when asking about maintenance, patients often question if the aligners need to be sterilised if they are dropped somewhere. As they are to be fitted in your mouth, ensuring maximum cleanliness is imperative.
Using hot water for sterilization can prove very costly, so avoid using hot water for sterilization. For cleanliness, Invisalign offers its own ‘Cleaning Crystals’ that will clean your aligners and eliminate any impurity that can harm you once you put them on.
In addition to bacteria elimination, Invisalign Cleaning Crystals can even remove plaque in 20 minutes to give you clean and neat aligners.
Do Aligners Need To Be Changed Regularly?
Not necessarily. Once you approve of the process, your dentist will map your teeth to formulate the creation of your unique aligners. You may be required to wear your set of aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day for the recommended period of time, for a particular set.
For maximum effectiveness and to ensure the teeth-straightening process continues, aligners may need to be changed. However, the frequency depends on your dentist’s assessment of the efficacy of the current set and your predetermined goals.
A new set is appointed in line with the progress you’ve made. Each new aligner will smoothly and progressively shift your teeth back in place, until you reach your beautiful new smile.
What If I Break My Invisalign Braces?
Invisalign is not easily breakable, so rest assured that routine usage would not harm the structural strength of the aligners.
However, if you do find yourself in a situation where you have broken your aligners, make sure to contact your cosmetic dental clinic ASAP. Only the dentist you work with will know about your current progress and is the best person to advise whether you should wear a previously used set of aligners, go for the next set of aligners or just simply order a new one. Invisalign utilizes cutting-edge technology to provide you with a teeth straightening solution that is more effective and less painful than any other. Misaligned teeth can lead to a plethora of health issues that adversely affect your hygiene. The impact can range from lackluster oral hygiene to psychological problems such as a decreased sense of self-esteem.
However, recent research has provided evidence that misaligned teeth can lead to several other serious disorders, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Misaligned Teeth Are Not Just A Cosmetic Problem
Contrary to common perception, the impact of malocclusion extends far beyond one’s appearance. Crooked teeth lead to improper bites and an unnatural state of resting teeth, which results in teeth being ground against each other.
Even while sleeping, patients suffering from malocclusion have reported teeth grinding habits. All of these seemingly minor problems can accumulate to form a very painful experience to anybody who chooses to neglect the signs.
Moreover, misaligned teeth also result in several gums and tissue related diseases that can cause them to deteriorate. This can result in the exposure of the jaw bones and lead to severely painful and traumatic diseases such as Periodontitis.
We’ll list some of the major diseases a person can face due to malocclusion. However, this list is not exhaustive and there are many more issues that can be caused by misaligned teeth.
Tooth Decay
Spaces between your teeth are the perfect home for bacteria. When you eat something sweet, these bacteria release acids that eat up your teeth’s enamel. If not cleaned properly, the bacteria keep releasing acids that rot your teeth until they reach the root.
Getting your teeth aligned in time, either through Invisalign or a total smile makeover procedure, can allow your dentist to clean those spaces and correct your tooth, blocking the bacteria’s access to sugary foods. This, in turn, protects your teeth from decay.
Bone-Related Diseases
As mentioned before, misaligned teeth can lead to severe bone diseases such as TMJ syndrome and Arthritis. In fact, one of the most common causes of TMJ syndrome is a misalignment of the teeth.
TMJ, short for temporomandibular joint, is the joint that acts as the connection of your jaw to your skull. It is crucial for the effective functioning of the mouth. However, misaligned teeth can cause severe pain and discomfort around the jaw.
In addition to TMJ, bad oral health has also been attributed to several diseases that impact the knee.
Halitosis
Halitosis has been linked with misaligned teeth – due to the fact that teeth misalignment makes oral hygiene maintenance harder. Any misplaced tooth is bound to promote the growth of bacteria. When bacteria release acid, the reaction can result in a bad smell from the mouth which can get extremely difficult to eradicate without the help of a dentist.
These bacteria will have to be removed with the help of powerful antiseptic agents that thoroughly clean from under your teeth. The cleaning process must be repeated several times to be fully effective. However, once you start the process of realigning your teeth, you can get rid of halitosis as well.
Earlier Identification Can Provide Lasting Relief
Misaligned teeth start posing a danger to your oral health steadily as one can feel pain in the jaw, or experience a chipped or fractured tooth. However, neglecting such symptoms in the initial stages can lead to complex and painful oral complications later on.
Such complications include severe jaw pain, disc slippage and severe gum problems that can cause teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. One of the leading cause of teeth misalignment is that as the jaw grows, teeth tend to drift apart. For some people, as their teeth drift it can lead to impacted wisdom teeth.
When wisdom teeth are impacted, they tend to force or ‘push’ other teeth which can lead to misaligned or crooked teeth as well as several other problems.
The thing worth noting is, earlier identification of the problem can result in a quick and timely medical intervention, saving you from severe pain and expensive treatments down the line. There are multiple signs to look out for, including:
Pain in the TMJ or jaw in general
Difficulty in performing routine oral hygiene maintenance, such as flossing
Cheek biting
Teeth grinding
Invisalign for Misaligned Teeth
There are several treatments available for misaligned teeth, but none as effective and feasible as Invisalign.
There has been a growing trend in the use of Invisalign, or ‘clear braces,’ owing to their feasibility and ease of use. With the help of advances in medical technology, Invisalign can be digitally perfected to ensure the best fit.
Invisalign provides a more durable and lasting solution, as opposed to normal braces. Invisalign helps the expansion of the teeth and the jaw arch before realigning the teeth – ensuring the teeth don’t face an ‘overcrowded’ situation.
Invisalign also has a long term implication which works towards the favour of the patients. As people age, their teeth and jaw tend to get weaker over the age. A wider, spacious jaw and teeth alignment ensures the jaw bone and cheeks don’t sag.
If you think that Invisalign is right for you, or you just want to know more, feel free to contact Orchard Scotts Dental for a consultation.

A smile isn’t just a facial feature – it communicates your state of mind. A smile enhances everything from our daily business dealings right to the most intimate moments we share with our family.
Even when we aren’t dealing in a face to face conversation, the nonvisual cue of a smile – in the case of customer care representatives for instance – can play a significant part in ensuring customer satisfaction and influencing their perception of our business.
However, not all people smile the same. An unfortunate few face dental problems that cause them to alter, or hide, the most prominent feature – their smile. One of the leading reasons why people don’t smile is because they don’t feel confident about the appearance of their teeth.
What Is Malocclusion?
Malocclusion, simply known as misaligned or crooked teeth, is a common dental problem that can easily be fixed by a variety of dental treatments, such as the use of Invisalign and smile makeovers.
There are two common cases of malocclusion: either the teeth are too big for the mouth, or due to improper alignment of the upper jaw to the lower jaw (or vice versa). Either way, misaligned teeth is a problem nobody wants, as it leads to multiple oral health hazards alongside a confidence crisis.
What Causes Malocclusion?
Experts indisputably agree that the leading cause of malocclusion can be traced back to your genetics. Just like the color of your eyes and the shape of your feet, crooked teeth can also be passed down your bloodline.
However, it is only one of the many causes. Other causes of crooked teeth involve:
Misaligned or malformed upper or lower jaws
Split lip and palate
Extensive use of a feeding bottle or pacifier as a child
Thumb, finger, or lower lip sucking during childhood
Breathing through the mouth as a child
Losing milk teeth early during childhood
Suffering from injuries that result in jaw dislocation and misalignment
A disease that impacts the gum, such as Gingivitis
Why Is It Necessary To Get Treatment For Malocclusion
Misaligned or crooked teeth are a common occurrence, and while it can be inherited, there is no rationale that states it should remain so.
In fact, with the advent of Invisalign and latest medical advancements like complete smile makeovers, malocclusion treatment has become an easier task than to live with a smile you don’t want anyone to see.
Dental Problems Associated With Malocclusion
If the benefits don’t attract, the cons will surely scare you – dental problems associated with misaligned teeth are bound to make you reach out to a dental hygiene expert. Malocclusion can lead to a number of different (and dangerous) dental problems:
Tooth Decay
Overlapping teeth lead to the creation of nooks and crannies that serve as an ideal spot for bacteria to hide. Even if you’re maintaining an adequate oral hygiene routine, the spaces prove impossible for toothbrushes and floss to probe.
The bacteria and plaque that builds up pose a grave threat of cavity infection in your gums as well as a risk for inflammation.
Teeth Fractures
Misaligned teeth strain the jaw and the facial muscles which can cause the gums to be under excessive pressure – leading to weakening of teeth.
In addition to the strain, the over or under bite that crooked teeth experience increases the risk of breaking and fracturing teeth multifold.
TMJ and Arthritis
Malocclusion is one of the leading causes behind excessive wear-and-tear to your jaw and its hinge joint – known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A TMJ disorder leads to pain experienced across your body – in the face, neck, and shoulders – alongside reports of jaw popping and bruxism.
In addition to the TMJ disorder, there are several pieces of research that portray how crooked teeth can lead to bone-related diseases such as Arthritis.
Other Problems Associated With Malocclusion
Apart from dental problems, misaligned teeth also lead to several other problems that affect the confidence and behavior of a person.
Facing these problems can cause a person to speak less, feel forlorn, and disassociated – possibly resulting in several mental health issues including depression and anxiety.
Problems with Eating
Ideally, a closed mouth should feature the tip of a tooth sitting in the gap that is created by the other; this is particularly true for canines. In the case of misaligned teeth, the teeth don’t lock properly when closed.
This results in an unusual biting and chewing process where the food is not broken down into smaller pieces that help enable smoother digestion. A disrupted digestion process further leads to a person feeling bloated after a meal.
Problems While Speaking
People that suffer from malocclusion have a higher probability of suffering from a lisp or other speaking problems. Your teeth from a vital part of your speech articulation because your teeth play an important role in the release of air and the sound your words make as you say them.
Misaligned teeth limit your ability to control how you speak, making the pronunciation of certain sounds – the S, F, and X in particular – a strenuous task.
Decreased Level of Self-Esteem
People with a misaligned smile tend to smile less due to a decreased sense of self-esteem and self-confidence in their personality. This is reiterated by several studies in the field; linking people with straighter teeth with more success, intelligence, and potential dates!
If this doesn’t rile you up to get your teeth fixed by Invisalign, we don’t know what will.
