What's iwaoi? What's it from? Should I get into it?

iwaoi is the pairing between oikawa tooru and iwaizumi hajime from the shounen volleyball anime haikyuu!! and it’s literally the best ship in the series it’s arguably the one ship that’s as close to a canon ship as we’ll get oKAY let me lay down their dynamic:

childhood best friends who have been together with each other since the very start, got into volleyball together, started playing for the same team together

perfect set up for childhood friends to lovers trope. yum 

mutually supportive of each other as close friends are and are always looking out for each other, making sure that the other takes care of themselves etc

there is also a lot of banter between the two of them and theyre super cute so hhhghghfjnjadj i love them :( 

canonically soulmates and partners IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD

together the kanji for their names (及川徹 for oikawa and 岩泉一 for iwaizumi) makes up 一徹 which means “dauntless”. thats what their characters are like and i love them 

their relationship is described as two people having “perfect trust”

it’s canonically said that whenever oikawa is put in a tight spot in a match, he will instinctively set his ball to iwaizumi because he trusts that his ace will deliver

iwaizumi always does. 

iwaizumi calls oikawa “the partner that i can be proud of” HELLO

THEIR BIRTHDATES MATCH. oikawa was born on the birth date of alexander the great while iwaizumi was born on the date he died 

once again: beginning and end. the perfect cycle; eternity. ;^)

they literally complete each other 

one of the other main characters describes them as a-un no kyoukū, which means a harmonious relationship where two people understand each other without even having to speak. thats amore bitch 

a-un also symbolises ‘the beginning’ and ‘the end’ 

apparently a-un is also used for komainu that are placed to guard the front of japanese temples and guess what! those puppers always come in a pair :^)

the kanji for hajime’s name means one but the pronunciation is the same as 始め, which means ‘beginning’. tooru’s name 徹 means to go through/to pierce through. together it’s like iwaizumi is the beginning and oikawa is the one that sees something to completion 

(although in the match this is flipped around because oikawa starts by setting and iwaizumi completes the rally but SHHH) 

anyway it is from beginning-to-end so it’s a complete cycle/perfect completion 

all signs point to their relationship being one that is complete bc they COMPLETE EACH OTHER and are literally so fucking perfect for one another 

tl;dr: please, please, please watch haikyuu and fall in love with them as i did

And all you can do about it is standing there in the middle of it, most likely wishing that you were also a sinner instead of seeing those so dear to you at each other's throat
