You should get an AO3 account

With the rise of AI and the well known epidemic of AI companies scraping Ao3 for training data most authors on Ao3 have locked down their fics to logged in users only. This is unfortunate for authors and readers. As an author I've noticed a steep drop in readership on fics restricted to logged in users and when recommending fics to my friends I've noticed that the folks without an account can't find the fics. The logged in users only toggle, not only keeps people without an account from reading a fic, but also from seeing its listing at all. More than 50% of fics I come across have this setting turned on. So, you should get an AO3 account. I know this seems daunting and unfair because it's an invite only system but, you can invite yourself through the homepage if you don't already have one, and in the past few years I've never heard of someone who requested an invitation through this method, not getting one. And for those of you who are hesitant because you don't write, that's okay. It's not weird at all to click on a commenter username and find that they have 0 works and 10,000 bookmarks. It might take a week for the invitation to actually show up, but I can almost guarantee you will get one, just keep an eye on your email. It's free to join and donations are optional. You'll have more to read if you have an account and maybe give your favorite author the chance to protect their work from AI without a loss of readership and feedback.

Some thoughts on the MAO anime announcement

Mixed thoughts, tbh. I'm happy to see this series finally getting an anime but I have to admit that Sunrise and Teruo Sato wouldn't exactly have been my first choices.

More below the cut. It's me, so expect a lot of tl;dr 😛

Positives first: The voice cast seems pretty solid going by the trailer and what I've heard of the actors in other roles. I'm particularly pleased that Yuki Kaji's back as Mao. Although I will be torn between amusement and sadness if we see Mao eating noodles at Hyakka's cart. (Congratulations to the three other people who got this one. 😅 )

The art style's pretty nice. I like how they're leaning into the horror elements. Good use of lighting too.

The animation's looking better than what I saw of HnY but I tried to see as little of HnY as possible, so I may not be the best judge of that. 😛 The shots of Mao fighting from what appears to be the OP are particularly fluid.

I do wonder how they're going to handle Nanoka's arm. It might depend on which timeslot the anime ends up in. Personally, I'd prefer it if they don't tone things down too much.

The biggest worries I have are Sunrise and Sato, tbh. I'm not a big fan of a lot of the Inuyasha anime-only material and I will forever hate how much they flanderised most of the cast. (If they screw up Nanoka or any of the other girls I will *not* be happy. I run side blogs for both Kagome and Kikyou and I've certainly seen some shit in my time, no small thanks to Sunrise)

However, given that this is an adaptation rather than an original project and they've got a lot more story to work with than they had when the IY anime first started airing, this is likely to have a lot less anime-only material than IY. I just hope they don't make too many cuts - Mao has a tighter, more intricate plot than IY, so there's not much you can lose without affecting the story as a whole.

Finally, on a more positive note, even if the anime ends up as a disaster, it's already got more people to check out the manga or catch up on it. Mao fandom is *tiny* compared to what IY fandom was like back in the day, so fresh faces are very welcome. I might do a rec post for newcomers or people who are curious about Mao if I have time.
