The planet Elysium is in an anti-time universe

The humans on Elysium are from our universe and our planet in the far far future, so far in fact that it's been forgotten or taken for granted they didn't evolve there. Originally their world had no pale, but what they didn't know is that time runs backwards in Elysium, and so while they experience time as the forward progression of things, the Pale builds up from the future to suffocate the present. It's a great oxygenation event caused by human thoughts running against the flow of Elysium's chronology. That's why people can intuit things from the future occasionally; they're things they will know in the future and they catch a whiff of it when the pale speaks to them
