I took several shows to Paris (Dreamgirls, Porgy & Bess, some smaller shows) but always stayed at a tiny hotel very close to the cathedral. Every trip, I made time to walk up the worn stones of the narrow, narrow spiral staircase to the roof, where I could sit for an hour, away from our cast and crew, and feel how temporary my troubles were compared to the timelessness of Paris.  In my memory, I don’t recall more than five or six people ever being up there at the same time and they always spoke in whispers. Some trips, I got an hour of warm sunset, sometimes I had the roof all alone in a light drizzle (in the rain, the pavement shines like silver, all the lights are misty in the river). Today, I can not imagine what the French are feeling.
