“For the time bein’, yes. Me and Indy are on rental. Two story house. Nothin’ too fancy..” He mused, smiling in return as Oskar here sat down. “I wish I could say it was the job, but it was mostly luck.” It made him think about how he had never had anyone over since, save the few special occasions where he’d had girls, but he would really mind it if his friend visited.
The mechanic didn’t shift back when he saw the pack of smokes, chuckling softly instead. “Still on the habit, I see.” he pouted, looking over his shoulder and around, at the few people gathering. “I mean, there’s no smokin’ sign on the door, right? You could always try –and no kiddin’? We both got here around the same time..? Where are you stayin’?”

Oskar’s gaze returns to the cigarette for a while, only to lower it back down on the counter. Clicks his tongue a little, “Nah, not worth it.” He plays with it between his hands as he keeps on talking. “I’m at the motel, just a couple of blocks from here. It’s not too bad. At least there’s a bed.” He shrugs a little, turning back to his friend with a smile. It had been a while since he had a place to call his own for more than a couple of months at a time.
“I don’t know how long I’ll stick around, but it sure is nice seeing a friendly face here in the middle of fucking nowhere.” There is, however, some affection in his voice as he says this; Ash had been right, he did like these places. If not for the places themselves, then for the jobs that brought him here.

“a lit candle?” tala snorts in amusement as she digs in her pockets for an errant lighter. on the best of days, she carries a lovely silver zippo with filigree delicately etched around a palm tree. the tarnish on it–despite being wellkept–is indicative of its age. on her worst days, instead, tala is left with a purposeful or accidentally stolen bic on its last leg. “not really into the whole ‘light as a feather, stiff as a board’ stuff.” she confesses, distinguishing herself from witches as well as the more classically dramatic species. steely fingers finally settle on the cool metal of the zippo and a sincere grin tugs at the corners of her lips as she finds it. “ah, here we go.” in a fluid motion, she runs the zippo along her jeans, opening and lighting it in a fluid motion. “if i’ve got a light, do you have a spare?” she requests, brow quirked in question. it’s been years since she’s bought her own pack–she smokes too infrequently now for that–but the occasional cigarette is a luxury of another time. “i’m sure i can find a quarter somewhere, too, if you’re feeling frugal.”

“I’m never sure what people around here are more likely to carry.” This could go for a lot of things. He smiles, a near-silent laugh shaking his shouders, hands going down into his own pockets as he’s watching her pull out the lighter. “I’ll let you pay me in the light alone.” He pulls the pack of Camels out of his pockets and holds it out to her, holding the top open with a finger. Then, in a gesture of equal trade, holds his other hand out for the lighter. “May I?” With her permission, he takes it and easily lights his own cigarette, taking the first drag and breathing out heavy with relief before holding the zippo back out to her. “Thank you. My own’s completely hopeless. I should start carrying multiples... Would at least increase the chance of one of them working.”

Ashton had to think twice before he ventured both eyes to the left, clearing his throat before focusing on the man’s face..and really taking it in. Small brown eyes, tanned skin and that moustache… God, no. There was no mistaking that bloody moustache. “Fuckin’ hell, Oskar..?” the human scoffed nice and loud, a clear sign that he didn’t believe what he was seeing. “..I could say the same..but you said you liked this kind of stuff, so..I’ll skip the question. M’fine..got here couple of weeks ago? Been workin’ as a mechanic ever since.” Ashton explained briefly, now fully turning himself to face the other. “How are you?”
He was relieved to be in company of someone he tolerated, for one. And that showed..especially in that rare smirk curled over his lips.
Tumblr media
He lets out a light laugh, the kind that feels good and warm in his chest——landing his hand, palm down, on the bar counter as he settles into a chair of his own. “Shit, so you’re here to stay, then? Thinking about settling down?” He snickers, mostly to himself, turns to lean both arms on the counter as he studies the bar shelves. Considering, briefly, getting a drink of his own——but knowing his own job here wasn’t one he could clock out from, he refrains, though the whiskey shelves gets thrown a longing look.
Digs instead after his pack of smokes from his back pocket, tossing it up on the counter. “I’m good, yeah, just drove in a couple of weeks ago myself... Still getting oriented. It’s a nice little town.” He pulls a cigarette out of the pack and stares at it, then throws a glance around the room. “You think they’d let me smoke this indoors?”

It’s a bit on the late side when he decides to go for a walk, the town now engulfed in shadows in between brown-yellow gleams from streetlamps. Stopping at some random corner, he is shoulders up, head down, huffing into his hands trying to light up a cigarette. The lighter between his fingers sparks for just a second, not long enough to light the smoke but long enough to have him muttering swears under his breath when it doesn’t catch.
“Hey——can I bother you for a light?" He quickly spins to face the approaching footsteps, cigarette dangling from his lips. “Even a lit candle, if you got one.”

As far as work days go, Ashton had had a quite pleasant day. Quiet, just like he liked them, and spent mostly away from the main counter, working on some old American muscle car that’d been brought over at the start of the week. Now, however, he was sat on a stool at a bar without minding his surroundings much, fingers clinging around a glass of craft beer, debating whether to get himself some fried chips to go with or not. That is until he bumped elbows with someone, prompting a look in their direction for a second, “–sorry,” he muttered, “Didn’t see ya there.”
Tumblr media
Since he’d been traveling, Oskar had grown used to not seeing the same face twice. Sometimes this was a good thing, a godsend, an excuse when he needed one; sometimes it’d get lonely. Luckily there were always some sort of company to be found in every town, but when he enters the Dusty Crow to find a familiar face, of all things, his smile couldn’t get bigger.
He sneaks around him, deliberately bumping into him when he stops at the bar counter. “I’ll say,” he comments, “didn’t see you either... Mostly ‘cuz I never expected to find you in a dump like this. How’ve you been, Ash?”
