“Five limousines escorted by police slowly drive past hundreds of cars packed with eager fans waiting to see the ultimate heavy metal group perform. […] This is Led Zeppelin, the world's most acclaimed rock group. Within the next few hours they brought 20,000 people to a thunderous roar at the Coliseum April 27 and 28. From the opener The Song Remains the Same to the incredible Stairway to Heaven they played to the utmost perfection. The crowd would not let them go. They came back after 10 minutes of clapping and screaming for two encores Trampled Underfoot and the exciting Rock and Roll." – ‘Crowd of 20,000 attend concert starring Led Zeppelin group’ by Angie Czelusniak (Tatler)

“This show in particular, as well as their current tour in general, is nothing less than a re-assertion of their status among the Rolling Stones, Who and any other acknowledged deities of rock. […] Zeppelin’s three-hour set passed with flying colors my personal shorthand estimation of a concert’s quality. It didn’t seem that long. The amount of material played, the musicianship involved, and the internal and external (special effects) manifestations of their music merged into an impressive, at time awe-inspiring, whole. The width of styles, moods and atmosphere, paired with consistent authenticity, crossed one of the widest spectrums of which any current combo seems capable. […] A surprisingly sedate and mature crowd did their part to create something I had previously thought was unique to small-hall presentations – a general warmness and intimacy of feeling emanating from the band and its reception by the listeners. It’s an attitude much more difficult to project over 20,000 seats than it is over 3,000. Such was the strength of Led Zeppelin’s performance, an in-person proof of why they still rank as one of the top viewing experiences in rock.” – ‘Led Zeppelin – The Coliseum – April 27’ by C. Michalski (Scene)

“Led Zeppelin had everyone awestruck and at the edge of their seats (toes for those on the floor). They came on incredibly strong and lived up to every expectation I had. Their first set was almost non-stop for the first five numbers, each one done incredibly well. […] Don't miss them next time they're around.” – ‘Zeppelin, Trinity and Racing Dogs’ by E. March
+ 1977 : Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, USA

“The biggest act in music today, Led Zeppelin, was at Freedom Hall recently and its “presence” was an experience I shall never forget. It’s hard to describe the awesome power and the soothing sweetness of the band. This contrast in its music is just one reason why it is Number 1. The concert proved that Zeppelin can do anything and do it well. […] The amazing thing about one of Zeppelin’s concerts is the way they change the mood so effectively. […] The light show is unequalled in our day and age. Literally, the stage was set for another change in the crowd’s mood as the band sat down for some acoustical songs. […] Every song was great, the entire concert was magnificent. Now I have no doubts that Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock group of all time.” – ‘Led Zeppelin in Louisville!’ by Ralph Sidway

“Britain's hard, hot electronic rock quartet, Led Zeppelin, headlines the Fillmore West show which opened before an unexpected overflow audience last night. […] Led Zeppelin began their conquest of American rockdom here just three months ago. At that time, I thought them a sure bet for great success and heard in their work a potential for firm, significant contributions to the nebulous music world in which they exist. Success the Zeppelin has had but their first set last night showed little of the musicianship I heard in January. Led Zeppelin has become overblown. Amplifiers are too loud. […] When Zeppelin gets into instrumental stuff, there can be no complaints. Page has more electronic ideas than anyone around and he and Plant exchange sounds and solos in a most fascinating way.” – ‘Overblown Zeppelin takes off’ by P. Elwood (Examiner)

On this day Led Zeppelin performed:
+ 1977 : The Omni in Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“My vocabulary is much too limited to describe how great Saturday’s Led Zeppelin concern was. […] Special effects have never really added anything to a concert as far as I’m concerned. That is, until I saw the shaw Zeppelin had planned. […] The show was expertly mapped out. The group’s every move seemed relaxed, yet perfectly timed. […] After all has been said, the trouble I went through to get tickets seems so insignificant when compared with the reward of seeing Led Zeppelin in concert. I do not anticipate ever spending a more enjoyable evening at a concert.” – ‘Zeppelin lands at Omni’ by John McCosh (OpenDoor)
“The Atlanta audience, having been well plied with the film The Song Remains the Same, greeted Led Zeppelin with a tremendous ovation and lit the hall with matches, even though they arrived thirty minutes late. […] Drawing evenly from their last two albums, the most impressive quality of the performance was that the group could indulge in a free form jam during their longer cuts without destroying their chemistry. […] The audience sat patiently through their longer pieces, not seeming to be too interested with the amazing versatility that John Paul Jones has on the piano. Achilles and Kashmir received thunderous ovations, but the band laid back for an acoustic set before cutting loose again. When Led Zeppelin comes to mind, most people do not readily think of the several acoustic numbers that the group has written. Therefore, the group was provided with a chance to sit in a small semi-circle and work out a few of the softer melodies. The crowd became anxious when the evening drew to a close with still no Stairway to Heaven. Lo and behold, their patience was rewarded at the closing of the performance. […] When most groups hardly expect to see their tenth birthday, the Zep has every indication that assures a long life yet to come.” – ‘Performance: Led Zeppelin’ by Murray M. Silver Jr. (Creative Loafing)

On this day Led Zeppelin performed:
+ 1977 : Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Led Zeppelin brought the power and the glory of British blues-rock to Cincinnati. The sheer energy of the affair was infectious. […] Even before they played any music they were hypnotizing. […] For three and a half hours, the fans who had come to see Plant strut and hear the stunning range of his voice were not disappointed: at times, he seemed to fill the hall. […]Even as the perpetrators themselves were speeding away from the scene, the 19000 witnesses were left standing and roaring their approval for their share of what will surely be remembered as the rock and roll event of the century: the 1977 Led Zeppelin American Tour. It is, truly, what Robert Plant had promised last winter in a Rolling Stone piece: “thunder, lightning and the hammer of the Gods.” – ‘The power and the glory: Led Zeppelin fills Riverfront with supreme rock and roll’ by Chas Main (Arts & Entertainment)

“While the tough, metallic sounds of the Sixties have almost faded from the rock scene […] Led Zeppelin still flies high on its own brand of helium—a heavy avalanche of sounds engulfing audiences with dominating raw energy, the basic roots of primitive rock power. Yet, Zep always shows their diversity—and thereby their genius in the rock music field—by playing songs from which their roots began to grow. […] Zep completed a repertoire ranging from their greatest hits like Stairway to Heaven to little known English and American folk songs. The wide range proved that collectively the Zep is a brilliantly talented group, the leading exponents of hard rock then and now and maybe for years to come, and that individually the Zep members are among the finest rock has to offer. […] It was simply stunning, sensational, spectacular and superb!” – ‘LED ZEPPELIN FLIES HIGH IN CONCERT: Sensational! Spectacular! Superb!’ by K. Williams (News Journal)

“Led Zeppelin, presently one of the most popular rock groups from Britain, drew a capacity crowd of more than 14,000 young people for an hour and a half performance in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum last Saturday night. An “Evening With Led Zeppelin” consisted of the four member group performing eight songs, and a 25-minute drum solo from their two previously released albums, along with additional improvisations added by the individual musicians.” – ‘Zeppelin plays 25-minute drum solo for 14,000 youths’ by D. + 1970 : Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, USA
“The lyrics of Led Zeppelin’s opening song went “Set my soul on fire. We’re gonna groove – my, my, my – we’re gonna groove” And with the help of 10,732 Memphis fans these four British blues men did exactly that at Mid-South Coliseum last night. […] When the group began their potpourri of Memphis, Tobacco Road and others, some of the audience came out of their seats to the front of the stage and began clapping, giving the peace sign and moving about. This action brought on the house lights and some of the crowd was pushed back by police officers. They tried to leave the stage but were brought back by a screaming crowd.” – ‘The Led Zeppelin: My! My! Groovy’ by M. Hughes (Press-Scimitar)
+ 1977 : Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

“If a Led Zeppelin concert is nothing else, it’s a physical assault on the human mind and body. The British hard rock group […] “assaulted” a frenzied Markey Square Arena crowd of 18,000 last night for two hours and 45 minutes with a cranked-up sound and a dazzling light show. The audience […] was socked with damaging decibels, flying Frisbees, firecrackers and whisky bottles, eye-burning smoke and eye-popping flash pots and laser beams. One big headache. But you know what? The crowd loved it! That’s what Led Zep is all about. The group must have a certain hypnotic effect on its followers. Why else would anybody stand for hours in line to get a show at a stage front festival-seating spot only to be crushed by sweaty, smelly bods the rest of the night?” – ‘Led Zeppelin keeps audience in frenzy’ by Z. Dunking (Indianapolis News)

“The 3,400 fans, mostly high school students, had taken most of the evening to come alive, but in the last 30 minutes of the two-hour concert, many left their seats and pushed toward the stage area. A few wanted to jump up on the stage with Led Zeppelin and dance. […] Everyone was on his feet and those in the back were standing on chairs to get a better view of the hard-working, turned-on performers. The crowd was grooving to the music – clapping, shaking their heads and bodies and rhythmically flashing peace signs with the fingers at Led Zeppelin. […] The audience was wild and it was easy to imagine the feeling at rock festivals since the performers and audience were communicating so beautifully. As Led Zeppelin ended the concert and the exhausted foursome left the stage, they were brought back by cries of “more, more” for an encore and the song most of the crowd waited all evening to hear. The crowd recognizing the first few bars of Whole Lotta Love, just broke loose. The last 30 minutes saved the show from being just another expensive rock concert. People left with the feeling that they really got their money’s worth.” – ‘Rock group fans get over-turned on’ by Elen Soo Hoo
