i know we've deservedly left ori in the dust, but i want to talk about just how badly written his character is— coming from someone who (unfortunately) was there to watch and main his pov.

keep in mind that due to his pov being gone, and me not wanting to dig for bits of his character throw other's vods and streams, a lot of this will be written by memory. i may get some aspects wrong, sorry in advance!

so, i think there's two things that cc!ori was trying to go for with his character. the main part was about him being this self-sacrificial saint, focusing on getting everyone to escape— even at his own expense. the other part, specifically after ayngel joined, was about him being a "half".

maybe i'll talk about that second part another day! but i want to focus on the first because i have more to say about it.

there's no reason why ori acts the way he does. sure, some people can just naturally be kind, but at the same time, people are built upon their experiences and learning. there's no explanation for why he's so selfless. he gets one, kind of, in silver linings— but that was very late into the story, and already after he started that whole thing.

he has no reason to care about all of the outsiders. he's playing the villain to "bring everyone together", yes, but why does he want to bring them together? these are strangers, some of which are actively brandishing and throwing weapons at each other. why does he have such little worry about his own wellbeing in this situation?

there's also the whole thing with him and owen. what do you mean he went on this search for owen?? why does he care so much about finding and killing him?? and he doesn't feel any complicated emotions about that when he remembers?? and owen is actively returning to his old ways?? that is the guy you joined a war to find and kill but suddenly you dgaf when you finally find him and he's acting racist again??

i could go on about this. the cc seems to have just thrown shit at the wall without thinking about how people think. there's a reason for everything, and ori is given no reasons at all to be like this. he's such a one-dimensional character clinging onto one concept without deep thought.

this is probably really obvious, but i think people that say mmj is about criticizing the idol industry or simply reduce them to "the idol group" misunderstand what the core point of their story is

mmj's main story had aspects criticizing the idol industry and showing how hard it truly is to be an idol, but that isn't the center of it. the point was how, despite minori seeing all of the setbacks that she might come across, she still sought out to become one. and in the end-- haruka, airi, and shizuku wanted to as well.

mmj's story isn't about just the idol industry. it's about the struggle and setbacks of being an artist. it's about how you'll come across obstacles, time and time again, constantly being demotivated by everything around you. and then, it shows that despite all of it, it will all be worth it, to make your impact on someone, bring others a brighter tomorrow.

sometimes i think about how important emu being a pink cute girl is to her character. she needs to have these traditionally feminine aspects to her because it supports her story of wanting people to take her seriously despite people inherently not. emu's story is literally about her specifically combatting her father and elder brothers while her sister stays on the sidelines and doesn't interfere. that's so clearly a gendered story and i wish people saw that.
