이번 사무실 이사를 준비하며 문제가 된건 책이다. 10년간 모아온 책 수를 대략 헤아려 보니 5천권 정도였다. 돈도 없고 처분을 할까 고민했지만, 포기하긴 어렵다는 결론을 내렸다. 나는 생각이 복잡하지만, 원인을 잘 모르겠을 때 서점에 가곤 한다. 보통 교보문고나 알라딘 중고매장을 애정하는 편인데, 알라딘은 다양한 동네로 / 책 배열이 바뀌었을만 할때 들리곤 하고 교보문고는 새로 나온 책이 궁금할때 들린다. 서점에 가면 다양한 주제의 책들을 쏘다니며 책들을 훑는다. 소설, 에세이, 사회, 금융, 컴퓨터 등.. 그러다 보면 끌리는 책이 있기 마련이고 그렇게 5권에서 10권정도의 책을 보통 구입하곤 한다. 그리고 이렇게 구입한 책들을 보면 내가 무엇에 대해 고민을 하는지, 어떤 것에 정신이 팔려 있는지…

이번 주말, 인생에 있어 급격한 환경 변화를 앞두고 있다. 2년간 썼던 사무실에서의 마지막 날이다. 또한, 16년부터 8년간 있던 서울대입구에서 마지막 날이기도 하다. 다음 사무실(겸 집)을 인천 송도로 구했는데 1995년부터 29년간 살던 서울을 떠나게 되었다. 요새 마음이 조금 싱숭생숭했는데, 적고 보니까 큰 변화를 앞두고 그럴만 하다는 생각이 든다. 여기에 있던 2년간 참 많은 일이 있었다. 좋은 일도, 슬픈 일도. 한편으로 후련하면서도 섭섭하기도 한 양가적인 감정이다. 한때 넓은 사무실이 50명의 팀원으로 꽉 차기도 했고, 떠나기 전인 지금은 대부분 팀원이 해외에 있고 5명정도만 상주해 일을 하고있다. 가장 많이 생각이 나는건 현재 같이 하는, 그리고 떠나간 팀원들이다. 현 넓은 사무실을…

회사의 언어를 바꾼지 6개월정도가 지났다. 영어 공부를 본격적으로 시작한지는, 1년 반정도가 되어간다. 참 재밌는 점은, 학교 다닐때 미래는 번역기가 나올건데 왜 영어를 해야하냐던 내가 정말 열성적으로 영어 공부를 하고 있다는 것이다. 실제로 번역기의 수준이 AI를 통해 획기적으로 올라갔고, 거의 동시 통역까지 가능해졌으나 역설적으로 난 필요성을 더 느끼고 있다. 억지로 부모님 손에 이끌려 간 영어 학원을 단어 외우기 싫어서 탈출하던 시절, 아무도 왜 영어를 해야 하는지 알려주지 않았다. 아니면 이야기해줬지만, 내 귀에 들어오지 않았을 수 있다. 어떤 이유였건, 어릴 적에 왜 영어를 해야하는지를 알았다면 훨씬 더 재밌게 공부를 했을것 같다. 특히 나는 이유가 중요한 사람인데, 영어를 했을 때 사귈수…
