Well, y’all

I think it’s time to officially retire Overgosh. The friendships, moments, experiences and works that inspired me mean so much, and can’t be taken away or lessened, but it’s hard to move on when the spark is gone. Depending on what happens in the future I may still enjoy the properties that I love - Warcraft and Overwatch specifically - but boy howdy, I don’t think I have the juice to blog about it. It’s been a long time coming from production and story issues, to the response of Blizzard to the Hong Kong protests, to now.

I’m going to go ahead confirm that I’m going to be discontinuing updates on my infographics, including my timeline. Thankfully I don’t think much more of value will be added to the timeline predating the “current” era, and it’s still a useful tool for sorting out future developments. Also to note: this is not just an Activision problem. This is an industry problem. Support the workers, support unionization, support their rights and demands. Organizations:

random overwatch thoughts as a professional artist in a (different industry) production based industry

- i’m seeing a lot of “IT’S BEEN A YEAR WHY IS THERE NOTHING NEW TO SHOW?”

Well....

1. a lot has been shown, it’s just all in progress at once. Totally weird it wasnt included in the opening ceremony but it’s clear there’s progress, just no “major, topical” milestones of major note like the other properties - just fleshing out a good foundation and plugging away at it

2. oh my god yall there was a global pandemic. It’s lasted a year. Idk if u knew. But that’s been kind of messing everyone’s workplaces up. Like... chill. I want to touch daddy 76s beard rn too. But we can chill.

- ALSO i didnt notice this when watching the showcase but people are pointing out that mccrees update is a few shades lighter than he used to be

a lot of the posts are using the pop and our mystery mini to compare skin tones which i think is marvellous (we pressed for that skintone both times and im glad blizz approved it), but also blizz changes mccrees skintone in every other (official! Reviewed and approved!) piece of merch and it tends to vary pretty significantly from pale to tan in his art in general. Ambivalent about this one (lots of thoughts) but am all for people speaking up.

Other fave bits from the last bits of the Overwatch Voice Actor panel:

- Andrea Toyias (casting/voice director) being an absolute loose cannon all the time and the holistic wine aunt that makes sure that the family gets together every holiday

- Charlet. I love her

- Surprising Matthew “i hate being on camera and doing mccree on demand” Mercer with Spontaneous McCree Improv

- Fred dropping to the floor and army crawling as Soldier during the improv scene because Actors Can’t Be Stopped

- Matt using a reedy cowboy twang for “high school McCree”

-  Improv Reinhardt not understanding the concept of prom or prom dates

- The entire stupid set-up of D.Va asking McCree to prom, McCree Making It Awkward by making it a group date instead by asking Reinhardt, and Reinhardt accepting and then adding Echo to the group as Soldier looks on in dismay because he and Reinhardt were originally prom dates

- Jeannie Bolet’s fantastic improv (her Improv!Echo makes me like Echo more)

- The entire cast’s vulnerability, kindness and how they’re just lovely and genuine humans. Seriously, it’s so nice seeing them all together.

Thoughts on Overwatch 2 from Blizzconline:

Was initially so goddamn salty that Overwatch was hardly mentioned in the Opening Ceremony. I was prepared to see NOTHING.

Came into the Behind the Scenes Panel, like.... Whatever, there’s no “What’s Next?” for Overwatch, so I don’t care.

Was a bit rejuvenated by the devs being casual and looking happy (instead of Jeff looking dead in front of a salty crowd) in their WFH spaces.

They started showing a couple of maps.... Thinking, okay, everything looks the same but just upgraded a bit. Sure... New tech makes everything very impressive but it still looks basically like Overwatch.

Then they start blasting through content! And I realize... Oh shit, this is all cinematics. These are all maps that I haven’t seen before. These are new NPCs I haven’t seen, new animations, new moves. And they’re not even stopping to go over them. Wait, Sojourn has so many moments? She’s everywhere! Hold up, Bastion has a cinematic moment with Reinhardt (and a cute hat)? We learn more about Genji and Mercy? Wait, slow down!! There are SO many cinematics!

As I watch more, I start to realize that the PVE snuck up on me. I’m getting some flashbacks, dare I say it, to Left 4 Dead 2 which is a favorite. They’re montaging everything so, SO fast, but they’re not repeating any content! Say what!!

The panel ends with some inspiring “we’re working so hard!! Working so hard!” talk from the devs, and I’m left like.

Wow, they really buried the lead with that one. I’m.... Kind of excited. Still! Cautiously optimistic, but excited.

Also, Soldier’s new look is some hot silver fox shit.
