there’s less than 24 hours left now
we’ve just had the second-to-last set of chapters, and we end tomorrow
i could do a last, mad rush to list up with everything that has yet gone unanswered, every possibly inconsistency, every minor extra detail. It would be Work, but I could probably do it
but. If it gets answered it gets answered, and if it doesn’t it doesn’t. Not everything has an answer, and if we wanted we could spend the next 15,000 years debating what, exactly, might have caused people to stop aging. And enjoy it, too!, like I’m sure some people in 17776 have. But
but we’ll probably never get The answer, and if we focus too hard on answers we might accidentally think it makes an Objective difference
think that they’re in any way Important
think that the minute, detailed points... are anything but kinda beside the point
like --
-- off-by-one errors in calendars, typos in population figures, locations of signed footballs by a mostly unremarkable athlete and specific images and types of mouse pointers, presidents of the United States and 250 yard canyons in Arizona and Czech architects and lightbulbs and probes and almost-forgotten caves and space and obscure rules in forgotten corners of rulebooks.......
are all -- once you divide by infinity --
OF COURSE
THEY FRICKING
MATTER
Because y’know what? I’m alive, and you’re alive, and Jon Bois, with all his ridiculous videos about ridiculously specific analyses of sports trivia and smooth jazz soundtrack, is fricking alive, and every one of those EIGHT BILLION GOSH DARN BEAUTIFUL HUMANS BEINGS running around this poor, tired, plante are alive, and, and
It’s not that Life is some abstract Good or anything. Of course, when you wind the universe back to the infinitesimally-small-and-infinitesimally-existent point at the beginning of the universe -- and when you follow the strings and paths and lines all the way to the single point at the end -- nothing, but nothing matters a single, infinitesimal, bit.
And so nothing -- nothing in the WHOLE GOSH DANG UNIVERSE -- matters more than you do.
And regardless of if we push ourselves to the breaking point or spend thousands of years playing video games. I can look up at a sunless grey sky and know that there are more colors there than I could ever even process. And I can think to myself:
And I can reply to myself:
(And then maybe I’m wrong.
Maybe it is pointless, in all the worst senses, and meaningless in the worst possible ways.
And then maybe,
Then I SWEAR.
I will lace up my shoes. I WILL FACE GOD. AND WALK BACKWARDS INTO HEAVEN.
One. last. time.
But right now --
we have less than 24 hours left. I’ll come back afterwards and we’ll see what did get answered, and what more questions we have or things we notice or facts we want to share
so I’m gonna wrap up. take my exit. and give a little nudge to you to go back and reread it once more
and then clear off and let Jon Bois have his stage
so. See ya
and thank you. for spending this week with me
.see you on the other side
#17776#17776 football#blog meta#... that got away from me a bit. and I refuse to even so much as close the barn doors in remorse.#long post

the story started on July 2nd, 17776
and Chapters 17 and 18, and almost definitely also Chapters 19 and 20, take place on July 3rd, 17776
given the significance of the date July 4th, and especially July 4th 1776, it is likely that 17776 will conclude on July 4th, 17776
furthermore, based on how revolutionary the events of July 4th, 1776 were (especially to the United States of America), it seems reasonable to expect that July 4th, 17776 will be similarly revolutionary in their effect on society
(pointed out and first image by @actualrealexplode7 , here)

When I first saw this number, I was like “Um… 45?”, but it’s actually correct.
Florida, Delaware, and Massachusetts aren’t here anymore (and we weren’t counting Alaska or Hawaii anyway).
So yeah. They know what they meant.

I’m looking at the map they gave us, and I wanted to point out some stuff.
Looking at Lake Michigan, you can see that the water doesn’t quite reach the original shape of the lake. There’s less water now.
Obviously, Florida being gone. Didn’t really want it anyway. In addition, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas all have chunks taken out of them. Big mess over there.
The mountain range that goes from Maine to Georgia is just missing.
Oh, and there’s a big lake in California.
The hell happened here?

nightpool replied to your photoset “Ten is currently in the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, making ...”
wait i'm confused how do we know where Ten is in the solar system because of how far apart 9 and 10 are. Wouldn't that be a chord, not a radius?
yes -- this calculation assumed that Nine, who was in orbit around the Sun, would still be orbiting around the Sun
since this is apparently not the case
this calculation is flawed
because we know both the direction Nine is headed (Andromeda) and how far they are, as well as the direction Ten is headed, and the distance between them, we can compute how far Ten is from Earth
I haven’t done the math yet. I might, and edit this, before it posts

Ten is currently in the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, making
collision with an object topical, although in reality incredibly unlikely because of how sparse the Oort Cloud is
because of the complications in the exact definitions of “asteroid”, it may not be entirely accurate to call those objects “asteroids”
however, it makes perfect sense that Ten would refer to them as such, because (a) it was only recently that people started discussing it in earnest and (b) taking observations and measurements in the Asteroid Belt was part of Ten’s mission profile, so it would have been on her mind
on this topic,
Voyager 1* will be a bit less than halfway through
(*Possibly going by V’Ger)

vladimir sobotka is not a polish name, if he were polish he’d be named włodzimierz sobótka

here is the location of the pond and sidewalk from Chapter 16: Denali, Alaska. Chicago, Illinois
So thanks to some excellent sleuthing by myself, @maki-iii, and @numinit in the 17776 Discord we managed to track down the pond and sidewalk from Chapter 16 on Google maps!!!

judging by the mouse cursor we see in Chapter 9: You know what, nevermind. (Video), the recordings are probably done on a Apple computer:
Apple Mac OS X Lion:
Windows 10: (copied from my hard drive)
Adwaita (a common GNU/Linux theme):
( pointed out by @somnilogical )
#17776#17776 football#meta#... this is probably the most pointless one yet.#(I love you all)#(.... that pun was VERY unintentially...)

resolution: it was a typo by Ten
at some point before 2026, there was a global mass casualty event, bringing the population of the Earth down from the more than 7,000,000,000 it is at in 2017 to approximately 1/1000 of that

(via @lemonyandbeatrice‘s post here)
the audio used in Intermission, part 4 is not a just some random play -- it is the iconic last play of the 2013 Iron Bowl (Auburn vs. Alabama), considered by some sportswriters, according to Wikipedia, to be “the single greatest moment in college football history“
(it is likely that Jon Bois picked this specific play to reflect on the state of humanity in 17776, possibly)

via @johnnyjohnjohnbgoode:
vlad sobotka is not a fictional character
vlad sobotka is real
also, that source implies (but doesn’t state outright) that Vlad Sobotka was Czech, not Polish -- which would mean the bartender misremembered or was misinformed
vladimir sobotka is not a polish name, if he were polish he’d be named włodzimierz sobótka

This has probably been pointed out already, but my theory for the population discrepancy is just...space colonization. The number given is the number of humans alive on Earth, nothing is said about the rest of the universe

the extremely overdone rules on what is a catch is very probably a reference to -- and definitely stemming from the same frustration/inspiration as -- Jon Bois’s classic piece What The Heck Is A Catch In The NFL, Anyway? An Explainer
