troy and nick are gay for each other..
or bisexual for each other?
or pan for each other?
just not straight. lmao.
in defense of troy and nicks love for each other
before anyone gets mad, i don’t care if a character is straight, it’s just so incredibly obvious that something was going on there, something that i think the writers planned on continuing if they didn’t hire a new show runner *which they shouldn’t have* and i’ll explain.
growing up troy had no one, he was surrounded with jeremiah’s bigotry, his intolerant bullshit that spewed from his mouth every time it possibly could. and i’m sure he was very homophobic. it goes hand in hand with being a racist piece of shit.
troy never got to leave the ranch, so he never got to interact with children his age, aside from, i’d say, mike. (some people theorize that mike and troy likely had something prior to the apocalypse and that’s why he was so hurt by mike leaving and i can honestly see that in a way.) so his interest in gender was probably never decided, he probably didn’t even think about it.
that was until nick, until the apocalypse. it was clear to even madison, that troy was obsessed with nick. even alicia said nick liked troy. troy even came to warn nick instead of his own brother.
some would say that he just wanted what nick had, but i believe there’s more to it than that. he spent most of his time with nick, and after lucianna left, nick spent most of his time with him, too.
they understood each other, having the same self destructive tendencies. they shared the same trauma bond. they were made for this new apocalyptic world, before the dead started walking. finally, someone understood them.
and that fucking hug when they were high- troy pulled nick close to him and had his hand in his hair, he protected him. genuinely every day they spent at the bazaar together, the way troy changed and accepted things for nick. they were codependent on each other.
i believe madison only killed troy because nick liked someone more than her, she wanted to be his number one and a part of her character being as manipulative as she is (i love madison, she’s manipulative, ill admit i am too, it’s a realistic character flaw) is that she needed to have a grip on him, she needed him to be dependent on her, but now, he had troy.
when troy died, nick didn’t fly off the hinges and kill madison or something crazy, but that’s not how he expresses emotions. the one person he had that ever understood him, i’d say even more than gloria, was dead. it was clear by his body language and the look in his eyes how much troy’s death messed with him.
to quote something i read once “If Nick had looked forward, just a few days ago, he couldn't have imagined a day at the Bazarr, or in the truck, out in this mindless, hot sand of a wasteland that is Mexico, without Troy by his side. They had come far together. And Nick couldn't, wouldn't express the pain he felt as the hammer made contact with his cheek. Couldn't, wouldn't express the sheer rage he felt at the woman who'd given him life, especially when she was taking what made his life meaningful, right in front of him.”
and then right after, he tried to off himself. of course, it was to save his family, but it was also because he had just lost everything he had. if troy were there, i’m sure he would’ve allowed strand to detonate it, or would’ve detonated it way beforehand. but he had just lost troy, lost himself, he was hurt by madison once again. he had nothing to live for.
the screenwriter for season three of ftwd was released, and i believe he didn’t want anyone touching his complex character, troy. daniel sharman, who played troy, expected troy to survive past season three and was told numerous times he would, and was only told a bit before shooting the finale that troy wouldn’t survive to “wrap up the otto storyline” which, i think we can all agree, was wrapped up when the ranch fell.
i think, he had intended for troy and nick to get together, and the original plot for season four would follow them after the dam, getting everyone back together. but, since he was no longer show runner, he knew the next show runner likely wouldn’t continue that storyline or express it in a way that he wanted, which is why he killed troy. *newsflash, they clearly didn’t.. and instead brought lucianna back even when it didn’t make sense, and cmon they got better in a fucking cave??*
also, around this time, i remember twd and ftwd being under heavy fire for its treatment and lack of lgbt+ characters, this would’ve been big for the walking dead universe and would’ve brought in so many fans, and i think the show runner knew this. hell, one of the reasons i started watching fear after deciding to not watch it and stick with twd was because i saw a few very popular edits of troy and nick and genuinely thought they were a couple.
in conclusion, i think troy x nick was actually supposed to be cannon and was setting up for season 4, but due to a new screenwriter being hired, troy was killed off. it fucking sucks and is what, along with the future seasons horrible plot line, ruined fear and is why no one talks about it besides us who remain in the fandom but it is what it is. :)

in defense of troy otto
the otto ranch was a literal cult. troy was brainwashed into jeremiah’s problematic views. it’s obvious, as soon as jeremiah died, troy started to develop and become his own person.
i don’t think he ever disliked the natives solely because he hated brown people. i think it’s because jermiah did. he’d shake his finger and say “they’re bad because they’re brown” and troy would just follow his racist teachings.
as a biracial person (inuit and white, making me native and “allowing me to speak on this”, although anyone should be able to) troy wasn’t racist and instead picked up what he learned from his father.
the second we see troy on his own w tftwd group, he encounters many poc and doesn’t have hate towards them, it’s shown more of him being anxious. anxious of something he was taught to hate, yet came to realize there was no reason to harbor hatred.
people could say “well, what about jake?” and to that, jake is a different story, he’s much more compassionate because he was allowed to go to school and wasn’t locked up like a prisoner at the ranch.
small little rant ik, but i was smoking ouid and watching ftwd and realized just how cultic teotwawki + the ranch was lmao.
