Owen was a tad offended by the implication that because his mum was a Muggle, he was more inclined to Muggle forms of violence instead of cursing, but he couldn't deny that Scorpius probably would injure himself if he hit Owen. "Then curse me," he offered instead. This was starting to sound masochistic. He didn't know how to reply to the fact that it would make Owen feel better, not Scorpius, because that was probably true. Was he still being selfish? He contemplated what he wanted, trying to think it through so he could word it right, rather than just stumbling his way through his words like usual. "I would love to be friends with you. I miss you. But I get that you probably can't bear to be friends with me again, even though I promise I'd never fuck it up that badly again (although I can't promise being perfect). So if you want me to leave you alone, I will. I just want you to be happy, Scorpius. I know it's far too little, too late, but I value your happiness more than I value mine, so even though I miss you, please just tell me to fuck off if you'd rather." He looked beseechingly at Scorpius.
After talking with Ari (who always knew exactly what to say), Owen decided to give it a day or too before talking to Scorpius. Owen had already probably messed up his life enough by approaching him before, so he didn’t want to rush straight into it. He also wanted to wait for a more appropriate time - first thing in the morning when Owen’d had about 3 hours of sleep probably wasn’t it. Owen had spent hours pondering exactly how to apologise to Scorpius, mulling it over before falling asleep, and ignoring his professors… The opportunity came when Owen wasn’t prepared at all. He was just heading to the Owlery one evening to send a message to his parents when he came across Scorpius attaching a letter to an owl (presumabling to his own parents). Owen froze like a rabbit in headlights in the doorway, before slowly approaching Scorpius. Thankfully, no-one else was in there to witness their interaction, which would be ideal.
“I’m an idiot.” He announced - which was not how he’d been planning to start his apology. “I’ve been a complete moron; I abandoned you and then expected you to just still be my friend, and I’ve been selfish and treated you horribly and I don’t expect you to forgive me but I’m really sorry.” He realised he should probably stop word-vomitting so he shut his mouth and stared awkwardly at Scorpius, running a hand through his hair.

Owen was getting more flustered by the second, trying to remind himself that he deserved to feel this bad; he'd been a terrible friend. "I mean, I don't know, if you want," he said, before scoffing at the idea that it would make them even. "Of course it wouldn't make us 'even', I hurt you much worse than anything could physically hurt me. I just meant, like, if it would make you feel better? Even slightly? I just feel like I deserve some sort of punishment." He shrugged uncomfortably, running his fingers through his hair.

‘Thank you for informing me’? Owen didn’t know how to respond to that or what to do now. Saying ‘you’re welcome’ definitely wasn’t the move. He floundered for a moment, staring around the room at the owls who were definitely judging him right now. “I, uh, support you if you want to punch me or something. Although you’re too good a person to do something like that. Not that it would make you a bad person if you did, because I deserve it. Oh Merlin,” he muttered, realising he really needed to shut up. Despite not knowing what to say, he felt like he needed to fill the silence as Scorpius clearly wasn’t going to.

Owen winced at Scorpius’ harsh tone and refusal to even look at him. “Hey, there’s something we agree on, then,” he said, attempting a mildly jokey tone, which he then regretted. “Sorry,” he mumbled, shaking his head at himself. Joking was obviously not the way to get Scorpius to forgive him. Merlin, he was going to keep apologising to Scorpius for the rest of their lives, wouldn’t he? Or, at least, the rest of their time at Hogwarts - Owen wasn’t exactly going to stalk Scorpius until he was forgiven. Although... No, that was stupid. “I was really dumb at 11, and I’m not much smarter now but I like to think I’ve grown up a bit, so I really am sorry. I think I thought I wasn’t treating you that badly but... I was. And I miss you, so the other day I just sort of hoped we would still be friends. Which was dumb and optimistic. And I know that we probably can’t be friends again, although I’d love that, but I just need you to know that I really am sorry. And I know how stupid I am.” He attempted a smile. Merlin, this was a painfully bad apology.

“I know, it’s so hard to believe. She’s gonna be grown up and trying to move out before we can blink.” He made a distressed face. That was genuinely a horrifying thought. “No need to be mean, you’re the one who had sex with someone as annoying as me.” He stuck his tongue out at her, smiling at Lyra’s delighted giggle at it. “One day that’s gonna stop working on me,” he said with an eye roll, before having a look at the Charms book. Sometimes being a Ravenclaw had real drawbacks.
Owen’s head was still spinning as he made his way up to the Gryffindor dorms. Was it really his fault that he and Scorpius hadn’t spoken in ages? Had he been the one to break their friendship? And how had he not noticed that the two of them weren’t really friends? He groaned aloud, narrowing his eyes at some second year Slytherins who turned to stare at him in bemusement. As if being a dad and trying to pass this year wasn’t hard enough, now he had to deal with this as well, and on some ridiculously tiny amount of sleep. He was relieved when he got to Ari’s room, knocking gently on the door. “Hey,” he said (probably in a tone reminiscent of Ross in Friends). “I know it’s your shift and all, but do you mind if I just hang out in here for a bit? I could do with some Lyra snuggles.” He felt instantly slightly better as he saw his daughter’s chubby cheeks.

Owen smiled back at Ari, always pleased when he got her to smile like that. “Good point, yeah.” Owen was glad his self-preservation hadn’t warned him off too much, or he wouldn’t be friends with them now - and that was probably another reason he hadn’t been put in Slytherin. “I feel like once you have a kid, you’re allowed to be nostalgic.” Of course he loved Lyra and wouldn’t change any part of being a dad for the world, but he had to admit he was somewhat nostaglic for the days of being reckless - and of getting a solid 8 hours sleep. Owen nodded, putting his arm around her (while carefully securing Lyra in the other), glad she was there. “I’ll give it a try. I’ll be there so much I’ll annoy him into being my friend again,” he joked.

“This is true.” Owen agreed. Out of the four of the Mustache buddies, she was the most reliably correct. “Merlin, good point, yeah. I was scared enough of you both and I’m not super introverted.” He shook his head at his stupidity. “Wasn’t it all so much simpler at 12, though?” He asked fondly, remembering the trouble the four of them got into sometimes. “Good question. I guess I should probably start by trying to apologise for... well, pretty much the last five years. That shouldn’t take too long.” Owen would write an essay about how sorry he was if that helped - which it probably wouldn’t.

Owen had to admit, it wasn’t sounding good. He sighed, bouncing Lyra a little more and gently wiggling her fingers. At least he hadn’t messed up being a dad yet. “You’re probably right. I guess I should have explicitly asked him... I suppose he’s not exactly the type to come along unless he’s been asked specifically.” Owen had really been a stupid, self-involved 12 year old, hadn’t he? He liked to think he would be better if he was friends with Scorpius now. “Yeah, she probably did. I probably did abandon him, didn’t I?” He winced at the truth. “I didn’t want to stop being friends, I thought we’d still be friends like you managed to do with Savannah.” Ari was much better at balancing things than Owen ever was. “I really f... fridged it up,” he amended, glancing down at Lyra.

Rosie was a bit of a psychopath, it had to be admitted, so Owen snorted slightly at that. “Okay, I know that really.” There were plenty of people Owen would say hi to as he passed, whose names he didn’t even know. He winced as she laid down the facts. “I didn’t dump him completely, did I? I mean, he was saying that I never invited him to hang out with us, but I’m sure I did at the beginning, right? And he always had some sort of excuse?” Despite the guilt that was steadily building as she said Owen had dumped Scorpius, he was glad he’d come - Ari was always a good person to talk things through with. “I guess... I just thought we were close enough that it was one of those friendships where you don’t need to talk constantly to stay close. Merlin, I’m an idiot.” He admitted, frowning.

Owen usually appreciated Ari’s bluntness (although he’d been horrified when she’d told him she was pregnant, at least she’d been straightforward about it), but now he made an unsatisfied face at her. “I mean, I always try and say hey to him, but I guess we haven’t really talked much...” he sighed, shaking his head. “Fine, I guess we’re not actively friends, but I didn’t expect him to hate me as much as he seems to.” There were loads of people at Hogwarts who Owen wouldn’t count as friends but he’d have a conversation with. He’d been startled to realise that Scorpius wasn’t even willing to talk to him.

Owen smiled slightly, sensing that Ari had stopped herself from telling him how to deal with Lyra. He made his way over to the cot, waving down at her. “Hello my little sunshine,” he said, taking a few moments before gently picking her up and cradling her. He caught Ari’s eye and saw her face, knowing he’d have to actually talk about it. At least he felt slightly calmer now he was with his favourite person. He sighed, bouncing Lyra gently. “Just had a weird argument with Scorpius. Did you know we’re not friends anymore?” He asked, frowning in consternation.

Owen gaped after Scorpius, trying to figure out where the hell their friendship had gone wrong. Owen had tried to ask him to hang out with his friends at the beginning, but Scorpius had always said he had studying to do, or shown zero interest in hanging out together. Owen slightly regretted the way he’d handled some of that conversation - Owen knew Scorpius struggled to talk to people, so it wasn’t his fault that he hadn’t talked to Jared. But surely Owen had made an effort to introduce them? Had he spent more time focusing on his new friends? Owen would never had wanted to make Scorpius feel inadequate. He wondered if Scorpius really hadn’t had any friends for the last four years. At least he had Kaelyn, he guessed. Head spinning after this painful and confusing conversation, Owen headed over to Gryffindor. It may not be his time to look after Lyra but he could really do with some non-judgemental baby cuddles right about now.
Owen was taken aback by Scorpius’ adamancy that they were no longer friends. He would say they were acquaintances, at best?! Did people just… stop being friends because they hadn’t spoken in a while? Whatever happened to his and Scorpius’ first-year promises that they’d be friends for life? “Well, that seems harsh. Do you think you can just decide if we’re friends or not, now?” He asked, absentmindedly wishing he’d had more than 3 hours sleep the night before. He’d been kept awake most of the night trying to get Lyra to stop crying. Admittedly, Owen might have cried a bit too. “Did I miss your announcement which said our friendship was over?” Maybe his lack of sleep was affecting his judgement; it would probably be wise to end this conversation here, but Owen was determined to get to the bottom of this.

“I asked you to hang out, you just always had an excuse like studying or something, so eventually I guess I gave up,” Owen replied, Scorpius’ tone getting his hackles up. “And you live with Jared, I didn’t exactly need to introduce you to him, did I? You were just jealous that I wasn’t only your friend anymore and didn’t want anything to do with anyone else. And I always say hi to you, you’re just never interested in having a conversation. You can’t blame us drifting apart all on me, you know, a friendship is a two-way street where you both have to try.” Owen had always kind of assumed that even if they didn’t talk, Scorpius would always be there for him - he hadn’t realised Scorpius had this resentment towards him. It was painful to learn.

Blinking at Scorpius’ vicious reply, Owen kind of wished he hadn’t started this conversation. It seemed like it was about to go into argument territory and Owen hated arguments, and usually thought of comebacks way after the conversation was over. At least most people in the Great Hall had drifted out by now, and the stragglers weren’t paying much attention to them so there wouldn’t be too much gossip about them later. He hoped. “Woah, hang on. I have other friends, sure, but I wasn’t the one who decided they couldn’t handle that. I’ve tried to make sure we’re still talking but you never put in the effort - you never even tried to make friends with my mates, even though you live with one of them!” Owen was sure his friends would have welcomed Scorpius with open arms if he’d tried to befriend them.
