Bad Habits

currently reading contact by carl sagan, about a fourth of the way through

it's funny, i don't think i've ever read a book that had such strong "this was written by a scientist with very particular thoughts and who has only ever written non-fiction before" vibes before, hah

like it ain't bad, but holy heck it's so hard science and math/science jargon heavy, and just a bit dry as it constantly info dumps, still interesting though

i will say, for a book written by a dude in the mid '80s, it's surprisingly aware and on point about the difficulty of being a woman in serious scientific spaces

and then there's a female president and the book's own initial dedication hoping the future world of his daughter's is in a better place than his, and oh boy does that make for a little staring at the wall

every now and then i think about the fact that in january 2020 i had one of the worst and weirdest illnesses i'd had in a very, very long time, just real chest-rattling weirdness and intensity

i got tested for covid antibodies later in the year, but they said it came back negative

either i somehow caught covid immediately and that and regular vaccines are why i've done so well over the years and the test was just too late/not good enough, or i really have managed to make it over four years without catching covid once

thinking about how the other day i heard a particularly thrashy grungy white stripes song over the speakers of a very average boring chain grocery store and man, that is kind of making me feel my age right now, help
